GANCE ABEL: (1889-1981) French Film Director. A.L.S., Abel Gance, one page, 4to, Paris, 21st January 1972, to Colette Monceau, in French. Gance explains to his correspondent that he has found by chance her last letter and states `..I send you this draft letter which I was going to send to Claude Mauriac and I never did. I do believe in graphology but fairly little in graphologists, because they are like doctors. Rare those who heal you!´ Accompanied by the original envelope addressed in his hand.VG £60-90Colette Monceau (1921-2016) French Graphologist and Author. She was an autograph Collector.

[PETER II] OF RUSSIA: (1715-1730) Emperor of Russia 1727-30. Grandson of Emperor Peter the Great. Orphaned at the age of two, his mother died ten days after giving birth and his father, imprisoned by his own father Peter the Great, died in prison in 1718. When Peter the Great died in 1725 he was succeeded on the throne by his second wife, Catherine I who also died two years after, leaving the eleven years old Peter, although ignored and kept till then in seclusion, as the only male-line grandson of Peter the Great. Peter II reigned as Emperor of all Russias only for two years and half and died at the very early age of 14. Extremely rare D.S., signed on behalf of the Emperor, one page, vellum, oblong 4to, Saint Petersburg, 23rd August 1728, to Ivan Maslov, in Cyrillic. The partially printed document being a decree according to which Officer Ivan Maslov is promoted to the rank of General. The order states `By God-s Will We, Peter II, Imperator of the whole Russia,….Everyone to acknowledge the fact and to demonstrate to Ivan Maslov the proper respect. We expect and anticipate that in his new rank as General he will continue to act as appropriate to his new position. As a proof of this Decree, this document is signed and notarized with our Country´s Seal.´ Signed on behalf of Peter II in his capacity as Emperor and Autocrat of all Russias by Duke Grigoriev and Stepan Ignatiev, the Emperor being only twelve years old. WRIGHT FRANK LLOYD: (1867-1959) American Architect, Designer and Writer. Wright created an architectural philosophy he named Organic Architecture. His work Fallingwater (1935) is widely considered the best work of American architecture, and the American Institute of Architects recognized him in 1991 as "The Greatest American Architect of all time". A rare and interesting lengthy A.L.S., `Franck Lloyd Wright´, two pages, 8vo, written to first and last page, allowing fine display, small but clean writing, n.p., 24th December 1901, to Sophia Austin Morris. A lengthy autograph letter related to the lecture of a book, stating `I am richer and happier for having read your book´. Wright states in part `Majind insists upon the return of your Jean Paul… He has gone with me to Hillside three different times and has been with me in all sorts of odd moments. I have read him - Fruit, Flowers and Thorns.. Never, will I forget my experience... Previous to that I had been all along charmed and sunned by his genial humor and his persistent inclination to stick a posie anywhere regardless.. but there came a grumble on page 260 - then on page 261 a row of asterisk, - like the ominous hush before the coming storm, - and solemnly deep down, he begins, and gathering wrath and force and power he goes on building up grandly until with a terribly comprehensive reach, he crashes the universe in fragments, at our feet and commands us to look down - and we look, shuddering into a godless chaos.´ further adding an amusing comment `I read these in bed on a Sunday morning (shameless confession) while the church bells were tolling and they never sounded so sweet to me before..´ and before concluding adds `I shall never lose that impression.´ Accompanied by the original envelope in Wright´s hand. GOEBBELS JOSEPH: (1897-1945) German Politician, Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1933-45. Rare vintage signed and inscribed sepia 11.5 x 15.5 photograph, unusual in this size, the image depicting Goebbels in a profile head and shoulders pose. Signed ('Dr. Goebbels') in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image, with a three line inscription in German, the Nazi salute ('Heil Hitler') and date, 18th October 1935, in his hand. Partially written across a darker area of the image although legible. Signed photographs of Goebbels of this size and quality are extremely rare. VG £800-1200

FRENCH REVOLUTION MATRIX SEAL: A rare and very unusual wooden matrix seal, used for wax seals, dating from the French Revolution era, corresponding to the municipality of Abenon, Orbec (what today is the Calvados). Matrix made in brass, showing the beam and the revolutionary bonnet with foliage. The hight being 11 cm, and the matrix seal 2.5 x 3 cm, with a total weight of 46 gr. VG 200-300

MARIE CASIMIRE QUEEN OF POLAND: (1641-1716) Marie Casimire Louise de la Grange d´Arquien, also known as Marysienka. Queen consort of Poland 1676-96, as spouse of King John III Sobieski, and Grand Duchess of Lithuania. Extremely rare A.L.S., `La plus obéissante de ses filles et sa tres humble servante. Marie Casimire´, three pages, 4to, n.p. [France], n.d. [November 1714 - early 1715], to the Pope, in French. A lengthy letter in the Queen´s hand, in an often "written as it sounds" French. Marie Casimire thanks his Holiness for the help given and blessings to her son who has passed away, stating in part `..the expressions of goodness shown by your Holiness, honouring my dear child all along his illness, and the distinction awarded after his death, cruel word for me to pronounce..´ With provenance from Morrison collection. Small professional repair to the fold, otherwise VG £2000-3000Clement XI (1649-1721) Born Giovanni Albani, Pope of the Catholic Church and Ruler of the Papal States 1700-21. Correspondent of Marie Casimire in the present letter.The Queen refers to her son Alexander Stanislaw Sobieski (1677-1714) Polish Prince, diplomat and scholar. Son of John III Sobieski, King of Poland. Alexander was a candidate for election to the Polish throne in 1697, following his father's death, but was unsuccessful. He died at the early age of 37 in Rome, in 1714, having recently become a Capuchin friar.

CARNOT LAZARE: (1753-1823) French Physicist and politician. Known as the Organizer of Victory in the French Revolutionary Wars. An excellent and rare A.L.S., `Carnot´, one page, 4to, n.p.[Paris], 2nd September 1795, to patriot Palloy, in French. Carnot as `representative of the people´ explains to his correspondent that he has received his circular and states in part `I have received Citizen...the seals and engravings enclosed and the forged medal with the tyranny iron which has weighed over France....´ further saying `I also had my own part of prosecutions suffered by the patriots of 89..´ Carnot refers to seals and engravings issued for the commemoration of the Revolution. Two extremely small holes not affecting the text or signature. One crease and very small area of paper loss to the left edge, otherwise G £600-900Pierre Francois Palloy (1755-1835) Known as Palloy the Patriot. Building contractor who started demolishing the Bastille the same 14th July 1789 and secured the contract two days later. A thousand workers participated in these works and large stones were reused for the construction of the Pont de la Concorde. Palloy wrote speeches, arranged celebratory festivals and issued paintings reconstructing the Storm of the Bastille.

ANNE OF AUSTRIA: (1601-1666) Queen of France 1615-43 as spouse of King of France Louis XIII, and Regent of France during the minority of her son Louis XIV, 1643-51. During her regency Cardinal Mazarin served as France´s chief Minister. Anne of Austria was a Spanish Princess, daughter of King of Spain Philip III. Rare L.S., `Anne´, one page, folio, Paris, 6th August 1643, to Baron of Isle, in French. Less than three months before the present letter was written Louis XIII passed away, and Anne of Austria, in her capacity as Regent of France, informs her correspondent that her son The King Louis XIV, aged four, has granted Baron of Isle the patent of Senechal and of Governor of the Baron Noé. The document bears at the base a large and attractive countersignature. With few extremely small holes not affecting the signature. Very small area of paper loss, as a result of the opening of the letter where the former seal was. Small overall, minor age wear, otherwise G £600-900

ROBESPIERRE MAXIMILIEN DE: (1758-1794) French Lawyer & Politician, one of the most influential figures of the French Revolution. Executed by guillotine at the age of 36. Rare D.S., Robespierre, at the foot, in his capacity as a member of the Committee of Public Safety, one page, small 4to (slightly trimmed to the edges), Paris, 11 floreal an 2 (30th April 1794), in French. The partially printed document was issued by the Committee of Public Safety and features their vignette at the head (the design featuring an all-seeing eye at the top, a cannon and other military equipment, and incorporating the legends Republique Française, une et indivisible and Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite, ou la Mort) and relates to Citizen Guerin, an artist and chasseur serving with the Armee du Nord. The document states that Guerin is 'requisitioned in order to utilize his talents to transmit to posterity the glorious events of our revolution, in accordance with the call made to artists in the decrees of the Committee'. Countersigned at the foot by Bertrand Barere (1755-1841), French Politician, Freemason & Journalist, one of the most prominent members of the National Convention during the French Revolution; Jean-Marie Collot d'Herbois (1749-1796), French Actor, Dramatist and Revolutionary, a member of the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror. Although saving Madame Tussaud from being guillotined, Collot d'Herbois administered the execution of more than 2000 people in Lyon; and Lazare Carnot (1753-1823), French Politician, Engineer, Freemason and Mathematician, known as the Organiser of Victory in the French Revolutionary Wars. Very slightly neatly trimmed to the edges, only very slightly affecting the annotations to the left margin, and not affecting the main body of text or signatures. About VG £2500-3500

ALBERT I: (1875-1934) King of the Belgians 1909-34. Rare signed and inscribed 9 x 12 photograph by Albert I, the image depicting the King wearing his military officer uniform, in a half length pose. Albert I was nicknamed "The Soldier King". Signed and inscribed in bold black ink to the lower matted border `To General Weygand, with my feelings of deep esteem and sincere friendship, Albert - 1921´ Framed in wood and glazed to an overall size of 10.5 x 13.5. Small overall age wear, otherwise G £600-900Provenance from the archives of Maxime Weygand (1867-1965) French military Commander in World War one and WWII. Weygand served in World War I as staff officer to French General and Commander-in-chief of Allied Armies Ferdinand Foch. During WWII Weygand fought against the Germans during the invasion of France, but later signed an armistice with and partially collaborated with the Germans as part of the Vichy France regime but was later arrested by the Germans for not fully collaborating with them. It has been longly debated about who were Weygand´s real father and mother, about his Royal ancestry, the candidates being Leopold II King of Belgians, Maximilian Emperor of Mexico and General Alfred van der Smissen. King Leopold II, took in charge Weygand´s education.

BATHORY SIGISMUND: (1573-1613) Prince of Transylvania. Rare L.S., `Sigismundus Princeps´, one page, folio, Dena, 18th May 1596, to a to Alphonso, Apostolic Nuncio in Transylvania, in Latin. Sigismund in his capacity as Prince of Transylvania, Moldavia, and of the Holy Roman Empire, sends his good wishes and expects he will be able to maintain in future a good relationship with his correspondent. He concludes expecting a prompt response and expects that all will progress `..under the divine clemency..´ With blank address leaf, bearing a paper seal affixed. Small overall age wear. G £400-600Sigismund Bathory was crowned being a child when his father Christopher Bathory died, after ruling Transylvania as Voivode of the absent Prince Stephen Bathory. He leaded the Kingdom since he was fifteen, and decided to join the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire, purging the noblemen who opposed him. After several abdications and several returning to Transylvania, he returned at the head of a Polish army in 1601, but abdicated again a year later in favour of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II, and settled in Bohemia where he would die.

NOBEL ALFRED: (1833-1896) Swedish Chemist, Inventor & Philanthropist. Known for his invention of dynamite, Nobel bequeathed his fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes. An extremely rare A.L.S., A Nobel, two pages, 8vo, Brussels, 17th October 1895, to Oscar Ljungstrom, in Swedish. Nobel writes concerning the development of a ball sledge and other apparatus, stating, in part, 'It is hard for me to believe that they in America have not made any attempts in this direction about which you first and foremost have to be informed. With this, I will not say the task cannot succeed although until now it has failed but there is a big saving of time, work and money with the knowhow of what others have done before. In pure mechanical direction, many very ingenious persons are working. The piece of the engine can be directed to make it good enough but it is maybe not necessary as the combustion possibilities are highly significant, which is shown in explosions in the mine, even without marsh gas' and concluding 'My coal engine is principally very interesting. It opens a new horizon. I know it is now in good hands'. A letter of good scientific content. Some light overall age toning and a couple of minor stains to the text, not affecting the legibility of the letter, an area of paper loss to the lower corner of the first page and a few neat splits at some folds and a few extremely minor pinholes to some corners, about G £5000-8000 Oscar Ljungstrom (1868-1943) Swedish Archivist at the Urban Engineering office in Stockholm. Brother of Fredrik Ljungstrom (1875-1964) Swedish Engineer & Inventor who was mentored by, and later collaborated with, Alfred Nobel. The present letter is written a little over a month before Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris. In his will the chemist set aside the bulk of his estate to establish the Nobel Prizes, to be awarded annually without distinction of nationality.

LACEPEDE BERNARD GERMAIN DE: (1756-1825) French Naturalist and Politician. A very good A.L.S., `b.g.e.l. Cte de Lacepede´, one page, 4to, Paris, 11th March 1824, to a nephew of Cambaceres, in French. Lacepede sends a letter of deep condolences three days after the death of Jean Jacques Régis de Cambaceres, stating in part `..no one, Sir, has learned the new with more sadness than me, the death of your respectable uncle that you have just lost, M. the Duke of Cambaceres..´ further referring the death of a member of his family eighteen months earlier, and referring to his friend Cambaceres saying `Posterity will honour him and will remind with praises the rare qualities of this statesman, his impartiality…´ and concludes listing his personal qualities. With blank address leaf, addressed in Lacepede´s hand `to Monsieur de Cambaceres, the eldest son, at his hotel, rue de l´Université´, bearing large remnants of a black wax seal, divided in two, as well as a small area of paper loss due to the result of the opening. Small overall creasing. G £60-90Lacepede was a freemason. After the Revolution, he helped Cambaceres to rebuild a French freemasonry submitted to the Emperor.

FOUQUIER-TINVILLE ANTOINE QUENTIN: (1746-1795) French Revolutionary and Prosecutor during the Revolution and Reign of Terror periods. Sentenced to death and guillotined. Rare L.S., `A.Q. Fouquier´, one page, 4to., Paris, 19th March 1794, to the President of the Gers department, in French. Fouquier in his capacity as Public Prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal states `..I have received together with your letter of the 15th February 1794 the indictments against the so-called Carris, nicknamed Barbelay and Negré..´ further saying `I will make sure that they will be judged as soon as I can.´ Professionally repaired to the left edge. VG £600-900

ESCOUSSE VICTOR: (1813-1832) French Writer, his real name being Victor Laserre. His first playwright Farruck le Maure was quite successful, but when his second and third failed Escousse committed suicide at the very early age of nineteen. Very rare A.L.S., Victor Escousse, an attractive signature, one page, 8vo, [Paris], Sunday 10th October 1830, to Baron Taylor, in French. Escousse requests three theatre tickets from his correspondent, a French Artist, and states `I will visit you on Monday morning, I am worried, I will let you know why.´ further referring to his friend who together with him committed suicide `Ah! Please send me through Auguste a volume of Voyage dans l´Ancienne France. I will not repeat that I will take great care of it..´ With blank address leaf, with small area of paper loss due to the opening of the letter. Small overall age wear, otherwise G £250-350 Victor Escousse and Auguste Lebras, nineteen and eighteen years old respectively, both French authors, committed suicide by asphyxia in February 1832. Escousse wrote a last message including the epigraph he wished for his book. Alfred de Musset mentions Escousse in his poem Rolla.

MUSSET ALFRED DE: (1810-1857) French Poet and Novelist. Best known for his autobiographical novel The Confession of a Child of the Century ("Confession d'un enfant du siècle" (1836), in part related to his love affair with George Sand. Rare and attractive ink drawing by Musset [c.1851], which relates to the coup d´etat of 2nd December 1851. The 9.5 x 6.5 light brown page showing three men running out from the "Conseil d´État" ("State Council"), struck down by the Law of Napoleon III. At the base of the drawing stating `The auditors chased from the Paradise on earth´. The drawing page has been affixed to a thicker card. Bearing a collection ink stamp to the verso, Artine Artinian (1907-2005) French literature professor at the Bard, NY University and collector. Creasing to the corners as a result of the affixing, and remnants of former affixing to the verso of the card. Small overall age wear and staining, otherwise G £1200-2000Alfred de Musset wrote about politicians and Ministers saying `Most Ministers are quacks, replacing each other, without changing anything to the sick´s health, and the worst craziness is to believe that revolutions can improve a nation prosperity.´

SWIFT JONATHAN: (1667-1745) Anglo-Irish Writer and Poet, a refined Satirist and political Pamphleteer. Best remembered for his work Gulliver´s Travels (1726). Swift was also the Dean of St. Patrick´s Cathedral in Dublin. The writing style term Swiftian was created after him. Very rare A.L.S., Jonath Swift, one page, 4to, Deanery-house, Dublin, 20th April 1732, to Lord Lionel Sackville, Lieutenant of Ireland and Duke of Dorset. Swift states `My Lord. I return my most humble acknowledgements to your Grace and my Lady Dutchess [sic] for your great condescension [sic] in inquiring after me at a time when you are so much taken up in crowds and ceremony. I can make no wishes for either of you, but a good voyage without sickness or accidents. For as to honor fortune, favor, and the like, I can only pray for the continuance of them. That I so seldom troubled your Grace, I am sure you will approve, as a matter of conscience in me, not to disturb your house, which in the business of some months left so few for your own leisure and diversions.´ With blank integral leaf. Flattened folds with separations repaired to the verso and to internal page of blank leaf. Minor overall toning due to age wear, otherwise about G £5000-8000

Crawford died of leukemia at the early age of 35), Deborah Kerr, George Arliss, Joan Dowling (a rare signed postcard photograph. Dowling committed suicide at the early age of 26), Richard Ainley, Paul Cavanagh, Sarah Churchill, Fay Compton, Peter Finch, Hy Hazell, etc.. All are boldly signed, most to clear areas of the images. AUGUSTUS III: (1696-1763) King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania 1734-63. Elector of Saxony in the Holy Roman Empire 1733-63 as Frederick Augustus II. Rare A.L.S., `Auguste´, one page, 4to, Warsaw, first of April 1759, to his son Xavier, in French. The King states in part `...I write this letter to you my dear Son, to send you my compliments on the day of your birthday, praying God for his holy blessings on you..´ further saying `..I have been informed that according to last news received that the Russians have taken possession of the city of Grossen (Grossenhain), and at the same time taken the control of the passageway of…´ With blank address leaf in the King´s hand. Bearing to the address leaf a red wax seal in good condition, and a hole due to the opening of the letter. Very small overall age wear, otherwise VG £1500-2000Although King Augustus´ fifteen children, sons and daughters, were baptized with the name Xavier or Xaveria among several others, the letter is most probably addressed to his second surviving son Prince Franz Xavier of Saxony (1730-1806).

PROUST MARCEL: (1871-1922) French Novelist and Essayist. Best known for his major novel A la Recherche du Temps Perdu (`In search of Lost Time´). Rare and excellent A.L.S., `Marcel´, a large good signature example, four pages, 8vo, n.p. [Paris], n.d. [c.1915-1916], to Albert, in French. Proust writes vertically and horizontally, and numbers the pages as they are written in different order, first referring to his poor health, and stating `My little dear Albert, I have just been through few long weeks with overwhelming fever which did not even permit me to trace a line. I am better now but my eyes troubles have increased and for this reason I cannot write until I will meet an oculist and will have glasses. But to visit an oculist you have to be able to get up. Vicious circle.´ Further sending a reproach to his correspondent, saying `Your letter seems to say that you have been ill, I would like to read more about this. But, bad boy, you never write your address and therefore I need two days searching in the dumpers of papers I have to find an old letter of you where the address is shown.´ Before concluding Proust comments his financial situation and states `My ruin is slowly but surely being completed..´ and sends his best wishes to Albert´s sisters and parents. Paper with two worlds water mark "Papier des Deux Mondes". Folded, with small overall foxing stains, otherwise G £2500-3500Albert Nahmias (1886-1979) was a broker who became friend and confident of Proust. They met for the first time in 1908 at Cabourg where Albert together with his sisters, Anita and Estie, and their parents used to spend holidays. He also worked as his secretary, helping with transcriptions, dealing with editors, etc… Albert and his sisters were models of Albertine Simonet in his most prominent work In Search of Lost Time.

LANDER RICHARD: (1804-1834) English Explorer. Lander and his brother were the first Europeans to follow the course of the river Niger and discover that it led to the Atlantic. Lander died at the very early age of 29 during his third and last expedition to Africa. Extremely rare A.N.S., `Lander´, to a clipped 5 x 3 piece. Lander reports on the Western Africa expedition of 1825, leaded by Hugh Clapperton, and states in full `Lander Servent to The Late Cpt Clapperton, Commander of his Majestys Affrican Mission of discovery and only Survivor.´, and alongside Lander lists the members of the expedition who died, saying `Died - Cpt Clapperton - Cpt Pearce - Dr. Morrison - Dr. Dickson - Marchants, Mr. Houston - Mr. James - Servents, Doven - Clumbous - Lang..´ A document of very interesting and historic content. The irregularly clipped piece has been affixed to an oblong 8vo page. F £250-350Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827) Scottish Naval Officer and Explorer. Clapperton died on 13th April 1827 near Sokoto, in present-day Nigeria. Lander remained as the only European survivor of the expedition.

MELIES GEORGES : (1861-1938) French Film Director, a Pioneer of cinema and Innovator in the use of special effects. Rare D.S., G. Melies, two pages, 4to, 16 Passage de l´Opéra, Paris, 5th November 1912, being a receipt issued on Melies' attractive printed stationery «Manufacture de Films pour Cinematographes - G. Melies». The manuscript receipt, in French, is for the sum of 370 Francs, being the payment of royalties due from the sales in New York of Melies' films. To the second page listing the name of the films, being A Son´s Example on New York sales and Ghost of Sulphur Mountain on Brockliss sales. Three file holes to the left edge of the document, not affecting the text or signature. VG. £1200-2000

An excellent and rare signed 10 x 8 photograph by Fernandel, the image showing the popular French comedian, standing aboard the transatlantic Liberté Le Havre of the French Line, in a full length smiling pose, reaching the port of New York with a Manhattan view to the background. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink `Fernandel´ to a clear area of the image, also dated `1957´ in his hand. With small ink stains. Very small overall age wear, otherwise VG £300-400

CAMUS ALBERT: (1913-1960) French Author and Philosopher. Nobel Prize winner in Literature, 1957. An excellent and rare set containing one A.L.S. and eight T.Ls. containing annotations in Camus´ hand. A.L.S., `Albert Camus´, one page, 4to, n.p., 7th April 1952, in French. Camus responds to his correspondent´s questions, and numbers five very interesting and literary answers plus a conclusion, stating in part `1) You can use the Mayo´s illustration without inconvenience - 2) The photograph with Barrault is indeed a rehearsal one of L´Etat de Siege. Honegger composed the music for it… 5) "L´Inédit est récent (1951). It is a commentary about a Vaucluse photographic report which I will present , not yet published with René Char. The provisional title is "The Sun Posterity".´ Camus further concludes `However you are fully right: it is "the deepest" we can say and there I was negligent with the style..´ An excellent content letter with good association. An extremely interesting literary comments by Camus related to his novel La Peste ("The Plague"). MARIA CHRISTINA OF AUSTRIA: (1574-1621) Princess of Transylvania and Moldavia, Sovereign regnant in 1598 when her husband Sigismund Bathory abdicated for the first time. Born Archduchess of Austria and sister of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. Rare L.S., Maria Christierna, one page, folio, 28th September [1597], to Alfonso Bishop of Larissano, Apostolic Nuncio to Warsaw, in Latin. The Princess thanks her correspondent for the letters previously received and indicates that they accept to participate in the conference of mediation and expects a good end to their affairs. With blank address leaf, bearing a royal paper seal affixed. With edges very slightly trimmed, otherwise G £400-600The marriage between Maria Christina of Austria and Sigismund Bathory was regarded as a major political gain, as Sigismund was a former vassal of the Ottoman Empire, and was now establishing close ties with the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Rudolf II appointed Sigismund Prince of the Holy Roman Empire and also secured the possession of Transylvania, if the couple remained without offspring. After long negotiations, the agreement was signed, however, this union proved to be completely unhappy. Sigismund, after a disastrous wedding night, refused to consummate the marriage and sent his wife to a fortress in Kovar Vara, where Maria Christina was kept as prisoner. After her husband second abdication Maria Christina went back to Austria to a convent where she would die.
