BOOK: BRERETON, A., 'The Lyceum of Henry Irving', Lawrence and Buller. On title page, the author has written in his own hand, a quotation from Henry Irving in ink, and then a quotation from 'Hamlet' and then signed and dated March 1921. Ltd. ed. of 100 on Japanese vellum. This is no. 40. Brereton was Irving's personal secretary. He mentions his freemasonry, even alluding to the complexties of his relations to the group. It has been suggested that Irving ,as a very senior mason, knew secrets about the Whitechapel murders which he chose to conceal. According to this theory, Bram Stoker, who worked for Irving at the Lyceum, and went on thereafter to write 'Dracula', of course, alluded to the murders in that book. The boards of this volume are slightly 'splayed', but it is nevertheless in close to VG condition. Rare signed by the author.

With broad flat and line incised socket flange, a single upper fillet to cylindrical stem and a ball knop, on a spreading circular base with stepped footrim, height 17.8cm, base diameter 14cm Provenance: Private Collection, London, 2000, thence Anne & Frederick Vogel III Collection. Sold Sotheby's, New York, 19 January 2019, Lot 1033 Literature: A similar example illustrated C. Bangs, The Lear Collection: A Study of Copper-Alloy Socket Candlesticks, A.D. 200 - 1700 (1995), p. 142, Cat. 115. In Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlesticks (1978), R. F. Michaelis wrote about the ball-knop trumpet-based candlestick (a type more commonly found in pewter) as 'a late, and abortive, attempt at a departure from the drip-tray proper, the hollow 'ball-knop' obviously serving a very useful function as a grip for lifting or carrying the piece, but almost completely useless as a hindrance to falling candle-grease' (p. 83). He goes on to note that to compensate, the flange at the top of the socket is wider than usual, which is a noticeable feature of this rare candlestick ** This item is part of the Christopher Bangs collection **.
The snuffer, or wick trimmer, of scissor form, one blade fitted with a plate, the other with a box and terminating in a point, the stand with an elongated oval cup, fitted with a handle with curved terminal, and raised on a knopped stem and a cut-corner square base, overall height 20cm Literature: See R, Gentle & R. Feild, 'English Domestic Brass', p. 131, p.80, for a very similar example in the Winterthur Museum, Delaware, USA, dated to c.1705. The authors note a number of silver upright snuffers exist, 'but examples in brass are rare', and that they were often made en-suite with sets of candlesticks with the same base design.
