Ace of Aces Erich Hartmann signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 36 x 24 inches. Only 1250 issued. Eric Hartmann became the world's top-scoring fighter pilot, achieving 352 aerial victories during World War II, a feat that is never likely to be surpassed. Flying the legendary Messerschmitt Me109, Hartmann was invincible in the air, achieving his phenomenal success during no fewer than 1400 combat missions. His tactics were simple: Get in so close to your opponent that you cannot miss. This required supreme courage and flying skill but was not without its hazards: of the 16 times he was brought down, 8 of these were caused by flying debris from the aircraft he had just destroyed. Robert Taylor's beautiful painting depicts Erich Hartmann, Ace of Aces, leading a swarm of Me109Gs as they half-roll into attack, high over the Russian front. This print has gone on to become one of the most highly desired in the world, and is sold at tremendous value in the rare occasion it appears on the secondary market! Each print in the edition is individually signed by the greatest fighter Ace in history: Oberst ERICH HARTMANN KC WITH OAK LEAVES, SWORDS AND DIAMONDS. Condition report foxing to borders couple tough to see on main image. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

Lot 885

Mighty Eighth Coming Home multiple signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 33 x 25 inches. Numbered 13/1250. A Golden Anniversary edition commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Bomber Groups of the U.S. Eighth Air Force. From their first inauspicious raid on German airfields on 4th July 1942, to their ultimate air supremacy over the skies of Europe in 1945, the men of the U.S. Air Forces never wavered in their determination nor flinched from the frightening odds they faced. The vindication of their policy of high altitude daylight precision bombing came with the ultimate victory of the Allied forces in 1945. In three years of continual combat, the bomber crews of the USAAF overcame the worst odds: They often flew in atrocious weather, they ran the gauntlet of the Luftwaffe fighter Aces, and they pressed on through all the flak that anti-aircraft gunners could throw up at them. They paid the heavy price of war, but in so doing carved out a niche in history, and created a legend that will live so long as man takes to the skies. Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the arrival in Europe of the men and machines of the Mighty Eighth. It evokes in a very special way the heroic deeds of the immortal men who flew the awesome combat missions of World War II and each provides a perpetual tribute to the debt owed to these intrepid aviators. Here the valiant bombers of the Eighth Air Force are coming home. Set in a majestic panorama of evening sunlight, a battle weary bomber force approaches the coast of Belgium. A B-17 Fortress sheds debris as it struggles to stay with the group, while three B-24 Liberators have joined the formation for the North Sea crossing. A lone P-51, low on fuel, flies close escort. Amazing autograph of the Artist and Robert MORGAN - He flew the legendary B-17 Memphis Belle on all 25 bombing missions to become the first B-17 in the 91st BG to complete the 'tour', Bob LANDRY - He has the distinction of being the only man in the 8th AF to command both a fighter and bomber group. As one of the 8th's commanders early in 1942, he achieved air victories flying P-47s against Fw190s while leading the 56th FG, and was Doolittle's Director of Fighters before taking over command of the 93rd and 493rd BGs. William LAWLEY - Flying a 305th BG B-17 on 20 Feb 1944, Lawley's co-pilot was killed in a head-on fighter attack. Injured in the face, weak and in shock, with 7 of his crew injured, Lawley flew his crew home, crash landing with only 1 engine. He was awarded the Medal of Honour Edward MICHAEL - Piloting a B-17 of the 305th BG on 11 April 1944, Michael and his co-pilot were badly injured in a frontal attack. With instruments wrecked and bomb doors jammed, he ordered 7 uninjured crew to bail out and flew the injured home in his severely damaged craft, crash landing in England. Michael was awarded the Medal of Honora for this action, Cliff PETERSON - Trained on B-17s but flew B-24s in combat in the E.T.O. with the 392nd BG, taking part in some of the historic raids of WWII - Bremen, Kiel, Gothe, and the first precision bombing raids on the V-1 rocket sites in Northern France. His B-24 was shot down in March 1944 and he became a POW. Albert SHOWER - The only Group Commander in the 8th AF to bring a Group to the UK and to command it until the end of hostilities. Condition report few tiny fox marks to borders and tiny crease marks to Rh edge. Very rare print. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

Lot 887

Mighty Eighth Outward Bound multiple signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 33 x 25 inches. Numbered 13/1250. A rare Robert Taylor print featuring the P-47 Thunderbolts of the 8th USAAF. One of a pair (the other being Mighty Eighth - Coming Home) within Robert Taylor's Golden Anniversary Series, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the American Air Forces in Europe. The USAAF arrived in England in 1942 to join the RAF with one aim: The destruction of Nazi Germany. With a doctrine of high altitude daytime bombing, initially with sparse fighter protection, the Eighth Air Force went forth into battle. But the determined fighter pilots of the Luftwaffe, together with the fearsome anti-aircraft guns of the ground defences took a heavy toll. It quickly became obvious that fighter would be required to play a decisive role in the campaign. And this they did. Under great Flight Commanders such as Hub Zemke and Don Blakeslee, the Eighth continually developed and honed their tactics, and it was only a matter of time before this mighty force achieved priceless domination of the skies over Europe. It is on record that the fighters probably made the biggest single contribution to the ultimate victory in the air war in Europe. Robert Taylor's spectacular painting features the fighters of the Eighth in a busy scene on a wartime airfield in England, as the fighter squadrons prepare for mission to Germany. The redoubtable P-47 Thunderbolts start-up and taxi out for take-off, while overhead P-51s climb out to join the bomber force, already en-route to the target. The scene is set in 1944, and the early model P-47s and P51s have already seen two years hard combat. Outward Bound - The Signatories This print is signed by 6 distinguished pilots who flew with the Mighty Eighth: Major Richard Peterson, Colonel 'Gabby' Gabreski, Colonel 'Bud' Mahurin, Colonel Robert Johnson, Colonel Don Blakeslee, Colonel 'Hub' Zemke. Condition report good odd fox mark to reverse. Very rare print. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

Lot 350

by Joseph Gloster, Birmingham 1905, featuring a scene in repoussé of Salisbury cathedral with a horse and cart in the foreground and a border of foliate decoration, monogrammed cartouche bottom left, with hinged cover, verso the same scene, 1.9ozt (Dimensions: w: 6.50cm d: 9.50cm)(w: 6.50cm d: 9.50cm)Footnote: Other notes: Along with the famous silversmith, Nathanial Mills, Joseph Gloster contributed to the popularity of the so-called 'castle-top' silver visiting card cases engraved with British landmarks and sold as souvenirs to tourists. He was a prolific Birmingham box maker at the time. These cases appealed to a public fascinated by novelty and became - and still are - highly collectable. Most castle top silver is made by die stamping (pushing the metal out from behind, using a stamp). Some scenes are quite common, such as Windsor Castle - however, the rarer the scene, the more valuable the item. The record for a castle top card case stands at £9,800, which was for a very rare example of The Post Office, Dublin.

Lot 382

circa 1785, the outer case of brass with (probably) tortoiseshell overlay, the lid activated via a push button, the open faced pocket watch with unsigned white dial, 38mm diameter, black Roman numerals, gold coloured spade hands and dot minute track, the front loading signed mechanical key wind fusée movement ornately engraved, with pierced and engraved balance cock, the gilt case with London hallmarks for Sterling silver, with rare incuse duty mark, the outer engraved, 'IH 1790' gross weight 107.6g and presented with the winding key

Lot 392

circa 1919, the signed white dial with gold coloured floral decoration, 40mm diameter, the upper centre chapter with black Roman numerals, blued spade hands and centre seconds, subsidiary day of week and month dials and visible balance, the mechanical crown wind 8 day movement with mainspring and barrel across the full width of the movement and onion shaped winder, the base metal case, 45mm diameter, unmarked, verso plain and polishedFootnote: Other notes: This 8 day model with calendar and centre seconds is an extremely rare and highly desirable piece. Literature: Pocket watches 19th & 20th century, Alan Shenton 2008 reprint, page 422

Lot 408

the white dial, unsigned, but marked 'Gibson Ltd Belfast' for the retailer, with black Roman numerals, blued spade hands, subsidiary seconds register and chemin de fer chapter ring, the signed mechanical crown wind movement number 71792 +31457 Peerless with pumpkin shaped winder and hand setting button at 11 o'clock, the gunmetal one piece case by François Borgel, number 442375, stamped 'ACIER', with threaded inner to take the movement housingFootnote: Other notes: François Borgel started making watch cases at the end of the 19th century from his workshops in Geneva and in 1891 he patented the screw down watch case design that bears his name today, the 'Borgel Case'. The Borgel case was first used for pocket watches before being widely used during the First World War for wristwatches. A watch with a Borgel case was significantly more expensive than one in an ordinary case, but it was the best available at the time for life in the trenches and military men rarely economised on kit on which their life depended. The case back and middle part are in one piece, so there is no opening at the back. The front opening of the case is thickened and threaded internally with a fine thread. The movement, complete with dial and hands, is mounted in an externally threaded carrier ring, and the bezel carrying the crystal is mounted onto the end of this carrier ring. The assembly of carrier ring with movement, dial, hands, bezel and crystal is then screwed into the case from the front with the crown and spring loaded stem fully retracted. Borgel cases are now rare and are much sought after by collectors.

Lot 419

circa 1833, the gold coloured floral dial, 42mm diameter, with gold coloured Roman numerals and spade hands, subsidiary seconds register and dot minute track, the front loading signed mechanical key wind fusée movement number 5223 under a brass dustcover, the case, 47mm diameter, by Joseph Lewis Samuel, with Chester hallmarks for 18ct gold, verso engine turned around a central vacant circular cartouche, gross weight 84.3g, presented with the winding keyFootnote: Other notes: Rosetta Hess had her workshop on Pool Lane, Liverpool and was active between 1825 - 34. It was extremely unusual in those days for a woman to be a watchmaker, which makes this example a rare and collectable piece.

Lot 480

circa 1975, model 12, the black dial, 35mm diameter, with oversized signature, luminous batons, white luminous hour and minute hands, orange chronograph centre sweep and two subsidiary dials with orange hands, date window at 6 o'clock and outer tachymetre bezel, the unsigned 17 jewel crown wind manual movement by Valjoux, number 7734, with pushers above and below the crown, the PVD coated stainless steel case, 40mm diameter, with screw down back, presented lacking its strapFootnote: The rare model 12 was produced in the mid to late 1970s at a time of great upheaval and turmoil for the company. There is little information available about the '12', having been overshadowed by the Montreal and Pasadena models, and they do not appear to have been sold in great numbers. The model 12 does however appear in the late 1970's catalogues, although without a photograph, and the original strap was not metal, but rubber, with what was described as a 'links effect'. The Valjoux 7734 movement was one of the most respected chronograph movements of the day, and was used by other watch houses, including Breitling and Tudor. It operates at a slightly slower VBH (vibrations per hour) than modern automatic movements resulting in a pleasing 'tick tick' sound reminiscent of vintage watches. The movement and crown are unsigned, which is correct and proper for this model.

Lot 689

by John McQueen, 1830, 'Fiddle' pattern with circular bowl, 0.97ozt (Dimensions: h: 16cm)(h: 16cm)Footnote: Other notes: Silver items marked in Banff are extremely rare and seldom appear for auction. First marks were recorded in 1680, with the last mention of marks in 1880, when the office appears to have closed. The town's recent revival of silversmithing has sparked a major resurgence of interest in Banff silver. The set of marks struck on this example are illustrated in 'Jackson's' page 592 Literature: Sir Charles Jackson, Silver & Gold marks of England, Scotland & Ireland, Antiques Collectors Club, 3rd Edition, 1994, p592

The readings, given despite Dickens's fragile state of health, included episodes from Pickwick Papers , Oliver Twist and the perennial favourite A Christmas Carol . The tickets for these Final Readings were hugely sought after and on 15th March Dickens faced an audience of some two thousand people, with many more having been turned away. After the final performance Dickens made an emotional speech which ended: ''... from these garish lights I vanish now for evermore... '', words which were inscribed on his funeral card distributed at Westminster Abbey three months later. A rare and significant piece of Dickensiana in excellent condition.
