In these early days of the Open, there were few, if any, exemptions into the final field and all the great players, both past and present, had to qualify. No less than 14 former or future Open Champions were in this field including The Great Triumvirate of Harry Vardon, James Braid and J. H. Taylor. There are also eight US Open Champions who tried to make the official Open field including Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, and Jim Barnes. Hagen and Jones were paired just six minutes apart, Braid was paired with US star Chick Evans. Ben Sayers Jr. and Senior both played as did the grand old man of St. Andrews Andrew Kirkaldy. Just days later, young Jones would stomp off the course in the third round after failing to extricate himself from the Strath bunker on the 11th hole. A splendid piece of Open Golf Championship history. 1925 Last Open Golf Championship to be played at Prestwick the home of the Open.
