The atlas was published anonymously - because of the religious and political machinations of the late 16th century; and was also known as the 'Itinerarium Orbis Christiani'. The maps derive from those published by Abraham Ortelius in Antwerp in 1570, but the maps in this atlas have been ascribed to Jan Matal (or Metellus) and Michael von Eitzing, who, together with Matthaus Quad and Frans Hogenberg, were some of the most important members of the 'Cartographic School of Cologne'. The rarity of the map, together with the lack of information on these secret works published in Cologne, confer a particular charm to the map. Copac lists only one copy, held by the National Library of Wales.

(Prepared and brought in by Mr. Secretary Brodrick, Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Lord Stanley), 22 July 1903QTY: (1)Woods A6(b). RARE. "Churchill's first great oration" (Bloomsbury Publishing). According to Woods A6(a), this is the second English edition, the first edition, priced at twopence and 44 pp. but containing the same text, and "There is no clear evidence that this version was ever released, and I would therefore regard it as most likely that Churchill, displeased with its appearance, demanded a better production and got it.""Mr Broderick's Army consists of six speeches given by Churchill to parliament, in which he opposes his own party's military reforms, as proposed by the Secretary of State for War, St. John Broderick. The plans to expand the permanent peacetime Army from two to three divisions ran counter to Churchill's economical instincts and parallels have been made with his father, Lord Randolph Churchill's 1886 parliamentary conflict over Army Estimates. These speeches demonstrate Churchill's developing oratorical skill and the growing divisions between himself and his party. Indeed he would not long remain a member of the Conservatives. Often seen as Churchill's first great oration, Mr Broderick's Army marks the beginning of his long and illustrious political career." (Bloomsbury Publishing). The last copy at auction, bound in library cloth and lacking the final blank was sold at Christie's in 2010, the same copy previously sold in 1980, and only two copies since 1975.

Lot 154

UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold half-sovereign, 1887. London. No JEB. The issues the mint encountered with the Jubilee coins are well documented and were exacerbated by the pressure for the coins to be ready for the Queen's Golden Jubilee on 20 June 1887. Records show that 1,771,425 half-sovereigns were struck in 1887, but only 871,770, less than 50% of the total, were fit for circulation. The Jubilee head series—in all denominations—provides collectors with a unique insight into the workings of the Mint. Due to time restraints the Jubilee head designer Joseph Edgar Boehm’s initials JEB were individually punched onto six master dies for each mint (London, Sydney and Melbourne) by Royal Mint employee William Poplett, creating no less than 23 varieties of 1887 Jubilee Head half sovereigns. It is unknown at which point in the process Jubilee coins without the JEB were struck. They were possibly the first coins struck before William Poplett punched in the JEB on six master dies. In any case, the 1887 half sovereign without JEB is extremely rare. In their publication 'The Jubilee Head Gold Half Sovereign 1887-1893' (Sovereign Rarities, 2019), David Iverson and Steve Hill estimate that no more than three dies were used with no JEB, indicating a production estimate of around 10,000 coins.Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; no JEB on truncation; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / High, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.Very fine, scratch. Lot 156

UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold half-sovereign, 1890. London. No JEB High shield DISH L509. No half sovereigns were struck in 1888 and 1889 in an attempt to steer the public towards greater use of silver coins, which were less prone to wear than the half-sovereign and so more cost-effective. The double-florin (4 shillings) piece was produced 1887-1890 to offset for the half-sovereign shortage, but weighs 22.6 grams and measures 36 mm. The public was not happy about carrying around the equivalent value of the widely used half-sovereign (10 shillings) in silver coins. Production of half sovereigns recommenced in 1890 with 2,266,023 coins.Having experienced lots of issues with the Jubilee coinage in the run-up to the Queen’s Jubilee, the Mint continued making tweaks to the design in the following years. To improve metal flow, the reverse shield was redesigned and moved slightly lower (sometimes called wide date as the lower part of the shield pushed the date further apart). However, the Mint continued using the high shield dies from 1887 production runs until 1892, the later ones being very rare (1891 is ultra-rare). For 1890, both types are common, the new lower shield type coins slightly more prevalent than the high shield.Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; no JEB on truncation; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / High, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.Very fine. Reference: Marsh-479B; S-3869C; DISH-L509Diameter: 19.3 mm.Weight: 3.99 g. (AGW=0.1176 oz.)Composition: 917.0/1000 Gold.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. Lot 197

Franz Richard Unterberger, Austrian 1837-1902-Sunset at the Santa Maria della Salute, Venice;oil on panel, signed 'F R Unterberger' (lower right), further signed, titled and inscribed 'St Maria della Salute a Venise / FR. Unterberger. Bruxelles' on the reverse, bears old label with number '165' on the reverse, 35.6 x 65 cm.Provenance: With Richard Green, London, no.AD109.; Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 10 October 1986, lot 24.; An important Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work was painted in the last decade of Unterberger’s life, after 1888, when he was prone to revisiting his most successful subjects from the late 1870s and treating them again with higher levels of virtuosity. The subject clearly found favour with the artist as he captured it in a number of versions which are known today. See, for example, two larger variations of the present work, though on canvas, which were offered at Christie’s, London, 20 June 2002, lot 82 and Sotheby’s, New York, 1 February 2019, lot 545.Dominated by the basilica Santa Maria Della Salute in the background, the present work evokes the serenity of a sunset evening in Venice, with the gondolas gliding on the Grand Canal and elegantly dressed Venetians promenading in the foreground. Unterberger adopts a soft palette, to great effect, of romantic earthy hues with some sparsely adopted touches of red to enliven the scene. The broad, panoramic scene is layered with levels of detail, and in the distance, the two domes and bell towers of the Salute obscure the brightness of the setting sun, bathing the canal in an afternoon glow. Whilst Unterberger’s keen eye for architectural elements is reminiscent of Italian vedutismo, this animated scene rendered with quick gestural brushstrokes is typical of the artist’s more romantic approach to the genre. The painting is particularly rare and special for being on panel and, as with his few other works on panel, was presumably taken ‘in situ’. Indeed, a sense of immediacy is very much present. We are grateful to Professor Sybille Moser-Ernst for confirming the authenticity of this lot, which is accompanied by her letter, and for dating it to the last decade of the artist’s life. Lot 57

Johannes Christianus Roedig,Dutch 1750-1802-Still life with fruit and flowers on a pewter plate and a glass of wine on a draped table;oil on panel, bears signature ‘J:D:DE:HEEM:f'  (lower right), bears printed 'Thomas Baring' label on the reverse, bears further labels on the reverses of the panel and frame, 37 x 47.8 cm.Provenance:[Almost certainly] William Jones of Clytha, Clytha Castle, 1790s.;His estate sale, Christie's, London, 1852, as by Jan Davidsz. de Heem.;Where purchased by Thomas George Baring, later 1st Earl of Northbrook (1826-1904).;M. Bernard, by 1945 (probably the London dealer Montague Bernard).;From whom purchased by Arthur Tooth & Sons, London, no.1246;The Hon. Michael Langhorne Astor (1916-1980), no.141.; Estate of the Hon. Michael Langhorne Astor sale, Sotheby's, London, 8 July 1992, lot 322, as Manner of Jan Davidsz. de Heem.; Private Collection, UK.Literature:A Descriptive Catalogue of the Collection of Pictures Belonging to the Earl of Northbrook, 1889, no.47 (illustrated), as by Jan Davidsz. de Heem (see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_sum_of_all_paintings/Catalog/Earl_of_Northbrook_collection,_1889).; RKD - see https://rkd.nl/en/explore/images/277082.Note:The present work was painted after 1785. It was almost certainly purchased by William Jones of Clytha in the 1790s when he was furnishing Clytha Castle in Monmouthshire, the building of which was completed in 1790. After entering the Northbrook Collection in 1852, it most probably remained there until 1929 at least, when, after the death of Francis Baring, the 2nd Earl, it would have been amongst the numerous works sold by his widow in dispersals between 1929 and 1945. By 1945 it was with a M. Bernard who sold it to Arthur Tooth, with the work still ascribed to de Heem. Records next emerge from Sotheby’s in 1992 when it was sold as part of the estate of the Hon. Michael Langhorne Astor (who himself possibly purchased it from Arthur Tooth), where it was catalogued as 'Manner of Jan Davidsz. de Heem'. Around this time, following research by Dr Fred Meijer, it was re-ascribed and fully attributed to Roedig. The attribution is based in part on a closely related work by Roedig – also signed as by de Heem – which last appeared at Christie’s, Amsterdam, 14 November 1991, lot 166. In an extensive catalogue note to a pair of floral still life works by Roedig that sold at Bonhams, London, 9 December 2009, lot 81 (for £1,196,000) – establishing Roedig as an important if overlooked artist - Dr Meijer suggests that the present work and others are probably examples of deliberate forgeries by Roedig. Interestingly, as Dr Meijer has pointed out, the ‘forged’ paintings are clearly by Roedig and make no concentrated effort, other than the signatures, to imitate de Heem.By the end of his career, however, Roedig had clearly emerged as a fully established and highly respected Dutch painter in his own right, with his fame extending as far as Saint Petersburg. Indeed, from correspondence between Roedig's son and the nineteenth-century art historian Adriaen van der Willigen, we know that the artist sold a large number of his works to Russia during his lifetime, which explains why so few remained in his native Holland. For example, in 1783, Count Alexander Stroganoff commissioned two paintings from the artist which he then gave to Empress Catherine the Great. The present work therefore provides a rare opportunity to acquire an example of Roedig's work of this high calibre.Consistent with his reputational rise perhaps is the existence of examples of his paintings which are indeed signed under his own name. In addition to the Bonhams 2009 pair, see, for example, his Still life which sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 1 December 2009, lot 68 (£54,750), which is strikingly similar to the present work, featuring the same halved peach and bunch of white grapes. The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge owns three of his signed works. One, ‘Basket of flowers with fruit’, shares distinctive similarities with the present work, particularly in the grapes, ears of wheat and morning glory flowers (PD.41-1966).We are grateful to Dr Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present lot.  Please refer to department for condition report

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Dutch 1606-1669- A beggar in a high cap, standing and leaning on a stick; etching, 1631, a fine, clear impression of this rare print, watermark Coat of Arms (cf Churchill 288), with narrow to thread margins almost all round, 15.6 x 11.8 cm. Provenance: Collection of Akram Ojjeh.; Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 30 November 1999, lot 114 (£1,840).; The estate of the late designer Anthony Powell. Lot 91

Jacques Callot, French 1592-1635- The Pont Neuf and the Tour de Nesle, Paris; etching on laid paper, inscribed 'Callot fec.' (lower right), c.1630, the plate 16.8 x 34 cm. Meune 714, Lieure 668 ii/iv. Provenance: With Thomas Agnew & Sons, London.; Private Collection, UK.; By descent. Exhibited: London, Thomas Agnew & Sons, ‘Old and Modern Master Prints’, 27th June-28th July 1989, no.25. Note: A good, well printed impression before the publisher Silvestre's name has been added. With small margins all around the plate mark. Examples of the first and second states of this print are rare (the first extremely rare). Before the additions of Silvestre's name and privilege, they are, as it were, pre-publication proofs, remarkable, as here, for the richness of the impression. The Tour de Nesle, which dominates the subject, was part of Philip Augustus' fortifications of the city, guarding the point where the river broke the surrounding wall. It was destroyed in 1663. This print, and one Callot made of the opposite bank of the Seine including the Louvre, were known under the title 'Les Deux Grandes Vues de Paris'. Callot drew the scenes during his visit to Paris in 1629 and the plates were etched after his return to Nancy in 1630. Lieure comments: 'Pour les deux vues de Paris, les deux premiers états sont les plus beaux et les plus recherchés'.Please refer to department for condition report
