A RARE NANTGARW PORCELAIN TAPERSTICK of circular form with loop handle of serpent-form and with stepped nozzle, the rim, handle and nozzle picked out in gold, the base with pink reserve, gilded flowers and single colourful spray of flowers, 5.5cms highCondition: appears to have a tiny firing crack to inside of nozzle but my recommendation would be to examine this carefully in person, perhaps it is restored, I am unsure. On the face of it, it is very nice and it is only by holding to string light that the fault / damage is apparent.

AN UNRECORDED NANTGARW PORCELAIN SAUCER DISH moulded with c-scrolls, flowers and wreaths and decorated by Thomas Pardoe with a pink rose and other flowers in two sprays, together with a blue butterfly within a gilded rim, impressed mark NANT GARW CW, 17cms diam Auctioneer's note: the moulding to Nantgarw saucers is unrecorded and coupled with the large size it is extremely rare and possibly one of its kind. It may have been an experimental saucer or possibly a very late output in the production time-line. The large size indicates that the saucer was probably meant to be used with an oversized breakfast cup.Condition: no problems apparent
American colonial interest: an interesting and rare relief wood carving, probably circa 1700, depicting an early settler battling and killing a native warrior or chief wearing a war bonnet. The attire of the protagonists and naive quality of the craftsmanship suggest a north American origin for the carving.

He is perhaps best known for his signature songs, including "Valentine", "Louise", "Mimi", and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and for his films, including The Love Parade, The Big Pond and Love Me Tonight. His trademark attire was a boater hat, which he always wore on stage with a tuxedo.Chevalier was born in Paris. He made his name as a star of musical comedy, appearing in public as a singer and dancer at an early age before working in menial jobs as a teenager. In 1909, he became the partner of the biggest female star in France at the time, Fréhel. Although their relationship was brief, she secured him his first major engagement, as a mimic and a singer in l'Alcazar in Marseille, for which he received critical acclaim by French theatre critics. In 1917, he discovered jazz and ragtime and went to London, where he found new success at the Palace Theatre. After this, he toured the United States, where he met the American composers George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and brought the operetta Dédé to Broadway in 1922. He developed an interest in acting and had success in Dédé. When talkies arrived, he went to Hollywood in 1928, where he played his first American role in Innocents of Paris. In 1930, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in The Love Parade (1929) and The Big Pond (1930), which secured his first big American hit, "Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight".In 1957, he appeared in Love in the Afternoon, which was his first Hollywood film in more than 20 years. In 1958, he starred with Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan in Gigi. In the early 1960s, he made eight films, including Can-Can in 1960 and Fanny the following year. In 1970, he made his final contribution to the film industry where he sang the title song of the Disney film The Aristocats. He died in Paris, on January 1, 1972, aged 83.Condition: some discolouration, water stain to the lower edge, wear. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. A rare Ottoman silk talismanic shirtOttoman Turkey, 18th/19th centuryWoven with gold inscriptions in a zigzag pattern on a red silk ground, stitched as a large long-sleeved shirt.-In gold: the words ‘God’ and ‘Muhammad’. In the wide band: the shahada. Bordering the wide band: Qur’an, chapter XXXIII (al-Ahzab), verse 56 (above); prayers for the four Orthodox caliphs and all Prophet’s companions (below)70 cm x 115 cmNote: During the Ottoman dynasty’s rule over Medina (1517–1916), luxuriously woven silk textiles adorned with Qur’anic inscriptions such as the present example were sent to the sacred cities of Mecca and Medina to be used as covers and adornments that were replaced annually. As these were considered to have been instilled with the holiness of the site, they were often redistributed to pilgrims and took on different shapes and functions. For example, a set of fragments from a similar textile, now in the Textile Museum, Washington D.C. (inv. no. TM 3.158a) were probably used as a vest; similarly the present shirt probably acquired a talismanic significance due to the past associations of the textile with which it was made.Condition: some wear, consistent with agesome wear, consistent with age
