China – Sino-Japanese War fine collection of approx 46 original snapshot photographs dating from 1932-7 during the Sino-Japanese War showing the shelling of Shanghai by the Japanese. The images show the destruction of buildings^ street scenes^ scenes showing the pall of smoke hanging over the city^ shots in the docks^ stretcher parties in the streets etc. All images appear good and strong. A remarkable and doubtless very rare set of images. In 1932 in what was known as the ‘Shanghai Incident’ the Japanese shelled the city and some 600^000 Chinese refugees fled the Zhabei district. In 1937 the city was the scene of violent conflict again at the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese war^ which was to last throughout WWII

Fort du Quense Pittsburg rare printed plan of the Fort du Quense Pittsburg ?before it was destroyed in 1758? contained in a composite volume of the Grand Magazine of Magazines^ vol 2 for January ?June 1759. Original calf binding^ 8vo 372pp plus index. Appears complete and in generally good condition throughout. Other features include a depiction of a Dodo^ a map of the Province of Pennsylvania^ a New Chart of South America^ a Curious Map of some late discoveries in the terra Australis comprehending New Guinea and New Britain and various other charts and maps. A considerable number of articles on a wide variety of subjects. The Plan of Fort du Quense is rare. It shows what became modern Pittsburgh and also Braddock?s Fields where General Braddock was mortally wounded and ?the Redoubt? a fortification located further upstream along the Allegheny. This map might have some claim to be ?the first map of Pittsburgh?

English Civil War – Charles Cullen^ Lord Cockayne group of approx nine ms documents relating to Charles Cullen^ Lord Cockayne^ High Sherrif of Northamptonshire in 1636. Majority of the documents date from the Civil War period with one being a transcript of a document in the very rare name of the Keepers of the Liberties of England – the body who ruled England immediately after the death of Charles I when Parliament realised that without the King there was no head of state. The documents relate to properties in Northamptonshire and elsewhere. Two have been signed by Cullen.

Josiah Wedgwood and the Thermometer Science – Josiah Wedgwood three rare printed scientific papers by Wedgwood discussing the development of thermometers for dealing with high heat – each extracted from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and dated 1782^ 1784 & 1786 respectively. 4to^ 22^ 27 & 19pp respectively with 3 folding plates. Unbound. Wedgwood’s discussions on the development of thermometers was of practical concern as before 1782 there was no method for measuring accurately the heat of a pottery over beyond the temperature of about 360 degrees C. These papers represent the culmination of his personal work in developing a more accurate system of gauging temperature – which led him to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Rare.

Autograph – Suffragettes – Lydia Becker autograph letter signed on the letterhead of the Manchester National Society for Women’s Suffrage dated May 7th 1878 to ‘Dear Miss Colling’ discussing her article on Suffrage which Becker had hoped to get into the May journal and regretting that she had not been able to . She adds that she hopes to get the article into a later edition ‘but I cannot be sure as there are so many meetings going on just now.’ Lydia Becker was one of the earliest leaders of the Suffrage Movement and is best remembered today for founding the Women’s Suffrage Journal’. An important and rare autograph in the history of female emancipation.

Admission ticket to Vauxhall pleasure gardens – an original printed admission ticket to the gardens with the permission ‘Admit Two – Globe’ with ms insertion ‘Tuesday July thirteen 1847’ and signed A Gore. Rare. Vauxhall Pleasure gardens was the most famous place of its kind in the country – particularly towards the end of the 18th c. First freely open^ charges were later made to access the many attractions^ but following the bankruptcy of the owners the gardens were sold in 1841 and closed permanently in 1859. The site can still be visited today on the banks of the Thames in London.

India Maharajah Duleep Singh Privately Printed Biography – fine 1884 first edition of Maharajah Duleep Singh & The Government^ 171pp^ privately printed for private circulation amongst Duleep Singh’s inner circle and nobles of rank. The book was the Maharajah’s auto-biography giving personal accounts and recollections of his childhood in Lahore^ his time as the ruler of the Sikhs^ his exile from the Punjab and his mistreatment by the British Government. The book was an appeal to the establishment and publications to gather support from his peers for a settlement of his financial affairs. Bound in dark red half calf by Sangorski^ with gilt edges and titles. Very rare.

India Indian Troops at Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee – exceptionally super large antique Lithoprint measuring approx 100cm x 70cm showing Sikh and Indian Cavalry at the front of the procession in London^ titled ‘The Diamond Jubilee Procession^ June 22nd 1897’. The print is in old frame and has not been removed^ has wear around edges. Queen Victoria’s 60 years on the British throne were celebrated with great pomp with large contingents of Indian and colonial troops and Maharajahs invited to attend. Such large examples recording the event are most scarce and rare.

Measures 28cm x 18cms. Duleep Singh’s army was defeated by the British in the First Anglo Sikh War of 1846 and he is shown here submitting to the Governor General of the British India Lord Hardinge.

India – rare Book on Shaheed Bhagat Singh A scarce book titled Bhagat Singh and his Comrades^ by one his colleagues Ajoy Kumar Ghosh^ who was Bhagat Singh’s comrade-in-arms and fellow accused in the Lahore Conspiracy Case 1st edition^ 1945^ 35pp^ with a 1946 presentation inscription on title page^ soft covers. Ajoy first met Bhagat Singh in Lahore in 1923 introduced by B K Dutt^ both were 15 year olds^ and became comrades in the Ghadar Party. In 1929 after the infamous Assembly Bomb^ Bhagat Singh and Dutt was arrested on the spot and Ajoy and his companions some days later after the accidental discovery of their bomb factory. Ajoy and his 12 companions where produced in court and here he met Bhagat Singh again^ and remarked ‘No longer was he the Bhagat Singh of the magnificent physique whose strength had been a byword in our party. A shadow of his former self^ weak and emancipated^ he was carried into the court on a stretcher’. Ajoy joined Bhagats hunger strike^ but on the farcical trial Bhagat Singh^ Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death by hanging^ while 7 of the men transported for life^ the others including Ajoy were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Amazing first hand and detailed account of Bhagat Singh last years from a man who had been part of his revolutionary party. Bhagat Singh (1907-31^) a Sikh Ja born in the Punjab^ was an Indian socialist considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement. His legacy prompted youth in India to begin fighting for Indian independence and he continues to be a youth idol in modern India

This rare Harbron Special is based on a Lotus 7 and is believed to be one of only five built by Bill Harbron of Bridport, Dorset, a former Lotus engineer. He designed and built the Harbron Special with good handling and good horsepower to weight ratio. It has a Fiat 1600cc twin cam engine coupled to a Fiat five-speed gearbox with Lotus 7 underpinnings and M.G.B.G.T. rear axle, with a light aluminium Roadster body. This rare example has been in dry storage since 2005 and will require some recommissioning, although we are assured it was running well before being put away. Documentation: Notre rare gravure est le IVe état, avec les biseaux et après l’aciérage, de l’édition Vollard, achevée de tirer par Lacourière en 1939, dont le cuivre a été rayé en 1956. Elle fait partie des trois uniques épreuves sur parchemin, signées et numérotées à l’encre rouge. Dans cette estampe, on y voit la célèbre figure du Minotaure qui remplace la figuration de l’artiste dès le 17 mai 1933, moment de la commande de la couverture du premier numéro de Minotaure. La revue apparaît pour Tériade et Skira, menés par les jeunes surréalistes Breton et Eluard. Pierre Daix (dans « La vie de peintre de Pablo Picasso », Editions du seuil, 1977) dira que « l’apparition du Minotaure coïncide avec le moment où Picasso reconnaît le surréalisme comme facteur de sa création (… et) le moment où Picasso passe à un surréalisme délibéré ». Picasso conçoit de nombreuses planches, absolument narratives, dans lesquelles le 24 mai, la figure du Minotaure copule, le 18 juin elle regarde une femme dormant ou la viole aussi. La représentation du Minotaure est très particulière pour l’artiste car si en 1928, Picasso crée des chimères mi-taureau, mi-homme, en 1933, apparaît une véritable fusion de l’homme-animal. Elle incarne aussi la puissance de la bête, associée à ses racines espagnoles et l’artiste l’associe à l’humain. Tandis que pour les surréalistes, la figure est davantage liée à la mythologie et à l’inconscient. Cependant Picasso participe à sa manière au bouleversement surréaliste du début des années 30, qui pour Brassaï se manifeste avec éclat par la revue Minotaure.
