Proof striking attractive toning never mounted edge bruise at bottom otherwise uncirculated very rare. Mr Robertson was the chief engraver and designer at the new mint located within the grounds of Topkapi Saray and the Swiss brothers Fossati supervised the restoration of Aya Sofya.

Islamic Coins Ottoman Anonymous Near Eastern or Indian imitation of a Venetian Zecchino countermarked ‘sah’ on obv 3.42g (Wilski -). Host coin pierced very fine countermark extremely fine; unusual and very rare. Wilski failed to trace any examples of these countermarks on imitative coins; this is hardly surprising as the purpose of the countermarking was to validate genuine coins. The fact that this particular host coin is of such crude style (and therefore probably not of European origin) makes it all the more surprising that it should have been countermarked.
