Islamic Coins Ottoman ‘Abd al-Mejid Æ Machine Trial 1851 by Maudslay Sons & Field London obv struck from a reverse die of a silver 20-Kurush Qustantiniya 1255h rev circular pattern with LAMBETH LONDON 1851 around 29.39g (Hawkins pl.27:7 [this piece]). Minor edge marks good extremely fine and rare.
Islamic Coins Ottoman ‘Abd al-Mejid Silver Medal 1265h (1850 AD) issued to commemorate the restoration of Haghia Sophia (Aya Sofya) obv tughra of ‘Abd al-Mejid within elaborate floral surround rev view of the building on the base at left FOSSATI RES. at right ROBERTSON SC. tarikhi-i tamir-i aya sofiya 1265 sanat incuse in exergue 44mm (Pere 1092). Proof striking attractive toning never mounted edge bruise at bottom otherwise uncirculated very rare. Mr Robertson was the chief engraver and designer at the new mint located within the grounds of Topkapi Saray and the Swiss brothers Fossati supervised the restoration of Aya Sofya.
Islamic Coins Ottoman Anonymous Near Eastern or Indian imitation of a Venetian Zecchino countermarked ‘sah’ on obv 3.42g (Wilski -). Host coin pierced very fine countermark extremely fine; unusual and very rare. Wilski failed to trace any examples of these countermarks on imitative coins; this is hardly surprising as the purpose of the countermarking was to validate genuine coins. The fact that this particular host coin is of such crude style (and therefore probably not of European origin) makes it all the more surprising that it should have been countermarked.
