* Jenner (Edward, 1749-1823), English physician and scientist who pioneered the concept of vaccines. A George III silver snuff box by IB, Birmingham 1795, the rectangular box with engine turned decoration, the hinged lid enclosing gilded interior, the inner lid contemporarily engraved ‘Edward Jenner to Thomas Croome.’, 27mm high x 85mm wide x 45mm deep, approximately 91gQty: (1)NOTESA rare Edward Jenner association item, even if the identity of the recipient has not been firmly established. The most favoured candidate is Thomas Croome (1796-1840), one of whose sisters, Mary (1779-1865), or Ann (1789-1849), was a god-daughter to Jenner and whose older brother, Robert (1794-1876), appears to have been a pupil and friend of Jenner. Robert lived and practised as a surgeon in Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire, where he also gave smallpox vaccinations. These siblings were the children of William (1745-1811) and Sally (1751-1743) Croome of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, where Jenner himself lived and practised. If this Thomas Croome is the right attribution then it is likely that the snuff box would have been engraved and gifted in Jenner's later years when Thomas was an adult. Another Jenner artefact from this Croome family is known. 'Dr Jenner's chair' was purchased at the 1823 sale of his furniture by one of Robert and Thomas's sisters and given to Robert. This chair remained in the Croome family until it was sold with other family effects in September 1900 and bought by E. B. Tylor, Keeper of the University Museum, Oxford, who in turn gave it to the Museum's medical department. From there it was transferred to the Museum of the History of Science in 1949 (inventory no. 17096). It is probable that both Thomas and Robert had some involvement in the proposals and planning for the erection of a memorial statue to Jenner in Gloucester Cathedral [sculpted by R.W. Sievier, 1825]; see Wellcome Library MS1180/3014/3014/5241, items 3 & 5: letters to the committee secretary, the surgeon Henry Jones Shrapnell (1792-1834). Another less likely, and older, candidate is a gentleman, Thomas Croome (1769-1839) of Randwick, Gloucestershire, who bought the Manor of Painswick, Gloucestershire, in 1804. This Thomas Croome married Elizabeth Clutterbuck (1767-1827) at Randwick in 1801. However, no direct connection between this Thomas Croome and Jenner has been ascertained. What is certain is that the family name of Croome is common in Berkeley and throughout Gloucestershire and it is quite possible Edward Jenner knew more than one Thomas Croome.

* Elmore (Belle, 1873-1910). Autograph Letter Signed, ‘Belle’, [London?], ‘Wednesday’, no date, to Lottie [Albert], Elmore stating that she was very grieved 'to hear the sad news your letter contained' and further adds, 'I would have called today but it's too foggy & I am suffering with a bad could (sic) could not work last week’, and in concluding Elmore sends her love to her correspondent's mother and family and asks for her deepest sympathy to be expressed to them, some very light uniform age toning, 2 pages on her personal blue monogrammed stationery, 8voQty: (1)NOTESA very rare autograph of Belle Elmore, the stage name of Kunigunde Mackamotzki. Elmore was an American-born Music Hall entertainer, the wife and victim of Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen. Lottie Albert was also a Music Hall artiste and a friend to Belle Elmore for more than a decade. Albert succeeded Elmore as treasurer of the Music Hall Ladies Guild in early February 1910 following the receipt of a forged letter to the committee, supposedly from Elmore in which she resigned her position as treasurer explaining that she would be leaving for America to spend some months nursing a close relative. Elmore, of course, had already been murdered just a few days earlier, on 31 January 1910, by her husband, Dr Crippen, who had proceeded to hide parts of her dismembered body in the cellar of their home.

She had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling. The ship's highly distinctive five funnels were rare and were later reduced to four. Brunel knew her affectionately as the "Great Babe". He died in 1859 shortly after her maiden voyage, during which she was damaged by an explosion. After repairs, she plied for several years as a passenger liner between Britain and North America before being converted to a cable-laying ship and laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. She ended her life as a floating music hall and advertising hoarding (for the department store Lewis's) in Liverpool, and was enentually broken up on Merseyside in 1889.

FIORENZO 1805. Awarded to Captain Henry Lambert of HMS St Fiorenzo for his bravery and skill in the capture of the French frigate Psyche. Captain Henry Lambert entered the Royal Navy at a young age in 1795 aboard HMS Cumberland and served on various vessels throughout his career. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1801, thereafter in 1803 promoted to Commander of HMS Wilhemina. In 1804, he encountered the French frigate Psyche for the first time, leading a brave and successful attack despite significant damage to the Wilhemina. He was rewarded for his courage with promotion to Captain of HMS St Fiorenzo in 1805, whereupon he came upon the Psyche for the second time and succeeded in capturing her. Commander in Chief Peter Rainier wrote to the Admiralty at the time "....I cannot help expressing myself much pleased with the animated and spirited resolution taken by Captain Lambert, for renewing the attack, which was only prevented by victory. All the trading part of his Majesty's subjects throughout India, rejoice on the occasion of this capture, as being more apprehensive of depredations on their trade from Captain Bergeret's abilities and activity, than from the whole remaining force of the French navy at present in these seas united." It was for this action that he received this presentation sword. Lambert died in 1813 during the War of 1812 where on 29th December 1812, as Captain of HMS Java, he again courageously attacked the much larger USS Constitution in the hope of at least disabling her. He was shot by a musket ball and died six days later in Salvador, Brazil. Lieutenant Chads wrote at the time "...the country has lost a most gallant and valuable officer, and myself (who have served under his command some years), the officers, and crew, a kind friend." and later "...the skill and determined bravery of my beloved captain, will be most conspicuous, and that in this last action of his life, although success has not crowned his exertions, his character will be unsullied and his memory honored and revered." Lambert's action to capture the Psyche in the St Fiorenzo is immortalized in Edward Orme's 1806 engraving after John Heaviside Clark and also characterized in Patrick O'Brian's "Aubrey-Maturin" series. In 1813 George Wrattislaw of Magdalen College Oxford wrote the following: "A gentle spirit, yet a dauntless heart, "Where worth and valor claim'd an equal part; "In whom the hero, friend, and husband shone "And all the virtues mingled into one; "Whose every action spoke an honest zeal, "And foremost in his thoughts his country's weal; "Such once was Lambert: - once the good and brave, "Now sunk, alas I in glory's honor'd grave; "While the lone Mourner, in her widow'd state, "Bewails the sad severity of fate; "And the rough seaman wets his manly eye, "Where, cold in death, the hero's ashes lie; "Or, as he sighing, quits the fatal shore, "Turns his last ling'ring look to 'Salvador.'"

A FINE AND VERY RARE FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS BY BOUTET, 15.75inch three-stage blued barrel decorated with an urn and scallops at the breech, highlighted in gilt and struck with a series of six maker's stamps to include NB, LG, BOUTET and Boutet's monogram, transitioning from octagonal to polygonal, signed Boutet Directr. Artiste No. 317 and Manufre. a Versailles to either side of the breech, the polished tang border engraved and decorated with flowers, border engraved stepped and signed polished lock with scarce patent roller frizzen, full stocked with finely chequered fore-end and wrist, ornate polished and faceted mounts decorated in the classical manner. Nicolas-Noel Boutet (1761-1833), French gunsmith and bladesmith to the French Royal Court and later, after the revolution, became "Directeur-Artiste" (director and chief designer) for the newly formed arms manufactory at Versailles. The manufactory at Versailles made regulation weapons for the French military but was also charged with making presentation weapons for Senior officers and foreign dignitaries. Boutet also made guns for Napoleon's own personal use. Edward Impey states in The Field (July 21st 2015) that Boutet's remit was "to surpass everything else ever made and to reach a level of perfection that foreign countries will despair of". This is a very rare example of his work as it was highly unusual for the Versailles manufactory to produce blunderbusses. For a similar example in poorer condition see Christies Antique Arms & Armour & Collectors Firearms, lot 159, 26th September 2012. Examples of his work can be found in the Met Museum, The Royal Collection Trust, The Victoria & Albert Museum and the The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum. The markings on the breech suggest that this piece pre-dates 1814 and bears the Liege variation for barrel proofing mark.

Two rare WW II football programmes for matches played on Guernsey, June 1943, occupation by German forces programme for match held at Beau Sejour on 8th June 1943 between VOBA (Les Vauxbelets Old Boys Association) and a Continental XI and another for the game between VOBA and an Island XI, annotated to top THIS MATCH WAS IN PLACE OF CONTINENTAL GAME, each printed on single sheet paper, minor wear and punch holes The Continental XI was a team of slave labourers drawn from Europe and brought by the Nazis to Guernsey where they were forced to work on engineering projects including the notorious Underground Hospital. The planned match never took place as the Nazis refused permission for the Continental team to play. An Island XI was therefore drafted in at the last minute and surprisingly beat the Guernsey champions, including Len Duquemin later of Tottenham Hotspur fame, 4-2. This real match would later become the fictional game in the famous football film Escape to Victory, in which the Nazis fielded a team to play the Allied Prisoners of War. There exists only one other known copy of the Continental programme, but the programme for the substitute match featuring the Island XI was probably printed on the day and is the only known copy. The match was played in aid of The Star Help the Children Fund.
