*Ravilious (Eric, 1903-1942). A pair of Garden Implements curtains, [1957], two fine cotton chintz curtains, printed by Edinburgh Weavers with Garden Implements design in pink by Eric Ravilious (EW monogram visible on turn-in), machine-stitched and with rufflette heading tape, lined, some minor marks and discolouration, and one very small hole, each curtain drop 98cm (38.5ins), width 105.5cm (41.5ins) Shortly before his death Eric Ravilious designed a number of ceramic patterns for Wedgwood. Several motifs from his Garden Implements series, originally created for a lemonade set in 1939, were later used on this roller-printed fabric produced by Edinburgh Weavers under the name 'Harvest'. This fabric, featuring minutely detailed vignettes of garden paraphernalia, including a beehive, sunflowers, a wheelbarrow, a cloche, rhubarb, and a barrel of garden tools, is extremely rare; even small samples and offcuts seldom appear on the market. Artist: Jeanne Modigliani (1918 - 1984) Artwork Title: Portrait Size: 63 x 48 cm Media: Pastel on paper Artist Info: Jeanne Modigliani was born in Nice on the 29th November 1918. She was soon after adopted and brought up by her aunt Margherita Modigliani, in Livorno, her father Amedeo Modigliani's home town. Her childhood was never discussed until she reached adulthood so she was unaware of the lives and tragic deaths of her parents, who both died when she was only 14 months old. However, life was not to be easy for the child of Modigliani either, and as Fascism deepened its hold on Italy poor young Jeanne was identified and persecuted as a Jew – so she left Italy and, like her father before her, took refuge in Paris where she later joined the French Resistance and she was imprisoned for political reasons. As daughter of painter Jeanne Hebutern and the great master Amedeo Modigliani, Jeanne inherited artistic genes and her works are of a stunning, elegant, refined and sensual quality, albeit painting was only one of her many artistic outlooks in life. Jeanne Modigliani died in 1984 in Paris, at the age of 66. Notes: Probably her most lasting heritage is the faithful and true biography of her father written in 1958 and the product of very intensive, scrupulous and passionate research when she finally discovered who her real father was! "Modigliani, man and myth", was later translated into English from the Italian by Esther Rowland Clifford. Artworks by Jeanne Modigliani have had some low auctions records but have attracted a lot of interest in recent years. Artworks by Jeanne Modigliani have now become rare collectors items.

The character of Peter Rabbit was based on Beatrix's own pet rabbit, and he made his first appearance in a letter written in 1893 to Noel, the five-year-old offspring of her former governess, Annie Carter. Noel and his siblings so enjoyed this and subsequent letters that Beatrix thought about having the story published. In 1900 she sent the story to at least six different publishers, all of whom rejected it, including Frederick Warne, who later decided to take the book on. Undeterred, Beatrix decided to have her little book privately printed, and in 1901 250 copies were published priced at 1/6 each, of which this is one. They sold so well that in February 1902 she had a further 200 copies printed with slightly amended text. (1)

λ A rare George III Irish upright square piano or Camerachord by William Southwell of Dublin, the mahogany case with satinwood banding, the top with a Gothic fretwork gallery flanking a painted tablet with a cypher with a worn inscription and the number '22' above a geometric parquetry band and a hinged panel painted with musical trophies within a sunburst frame and an outer border of grapevines, peacock feathers and ribbon tied instruments, flanked by a pair of oval silk pleated panels, the base with two hinged compartments, one revealing the five and a half octave keyboard with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals with one pedal, the conforming stand on square tapering legs with an undertier and brass castors, 141.7cm high, 157cm wide, 46.5cm deep.  William Southwell (1736/7-1825) was an Anglo-Irish inventor and musical instrument maker whom made in particular very fine pianos for the nobility and the wealthy elite. He is most well known for the production of a demi-lune piano which when closed appeared as a very fashionable Adam style pier table. The above example is a rare upright square pianoforte, the design for this piano was patented in 1798. It is number '22' so this points it to being an early example made between 1798 and 1800. Only a small number of these pianos are known to exist, there is an example in the National Museum, Dublin and Ireland and there was one in the Finchcocks Musical Museum in Kent which closed in December 2015. Our thanks to Margaret Debenham for help in researching this lot.
