Lot 1

Unusual Yuruk rug, east Anatolia, late 19th century, 7ft.8in. x 4ft. 2.34m. x 1.22m. Overall uneven wear, very slight loss top left corner. The design of this fine old Yuruk is comparatively rare.

Lot 1

An interesting Quadruple medallion Kazak long rug, south west Caucasus second half 19th century, 8ft.10in. x 4ft.4in. 2.69m. x 1.32m. Overall even wear, left side slightly ragged, slight losses lower end, small hole upper right border. This is a fairly rare variant of the better known triple medallion Kazak design, discussed by Raoul Tschebull in his article The Development of Four Kazak Designs (Hali, vol. 1, no. 3, pp. 257-261). This variant lacks the alternate medallion found on the triple group and instead of octagons, it has large diamond medallions with hooked outlines. However, the four-armed motif within each medallion is found on the more familiar group but is here drawn with unusual sophistication; the blocks of four inward arrows, instead of appearing in the medallions, are used as filler ornaments in the field, as well as alternating motifs in the main border. This rug is quite finely knotted for a Kazak, with brownish salmon wefts; the well drawn outer blue and yellow medachyl guard is a fairly unusual design element on a Kazak. All the colours appear to be natural.

Lot 1

Shirvan rug, east Caucasus, second half 19th century, 6ft.7in. x 4ft.5in. 2.01m. x 1.35m. Overall uneven wear, small patch upper left corner. Rugs of this design are very rare and are seldom illustrated in the literature. One other example known to us is in Bennett, Oriental Rugs vol. 1: Caucasian, pl. 246. This has four identical medallions on a blue field, although these are flanked by rosettes; it also has a wide series of borders and guards, one of which has the same design as seen in the pale blue guards of our rug. The author of the Caucasus book cited above knew of no other examples in the literature at that time (1981), hence his description of the rug as something of an odd-ball. The present rug, it should be added, appears to be considerably older than the example he illustrated.

Lot 1

Baluchi prayer rug, Mashad region, Khorasan, dated in both spandrels al seneh 1301[AH] (In the year 1883-4AD), 4ft. x 2ft.10in. 1.22m. x 0.86m. Overall uneven wear. Dated Baluchi rugs are extremely rare and thus all such examples are valuable markers in any attempt at a chronology of Baluchi weaving. This prayer rug has what appears to be dyed sheeps wool for the field rather than natural camel; it has quite fine asymmetric knotting, white wool warps, greyish brown wool wefts and a palette of eight colours - red, purplish red, pink-red, mid brown, camel, dark blue, bright green and ivory (the purplish red and pink-red appear to be mixtures of madder and fuchsine and have faded; the bright green, used only in a series of tiny spots here and there, is also synthetic and is now invisible on the front).

Lot 1

Rare plain field ghileem sofreh by the Darrehshuri taifeh of the Qashqai Confederation, Fars, south west Persia, early 20th century, 5ft.1in. x 3ft. 1.55m. x 0.91m.

Lot 1

A CASKET of rectangular form, the domed hinged lid engraved with stylised scroll and flowerhead motif borders and decorated with hunting and religious scenes, the back engraved with a battle scene and the front with allegorical scenes, with moulded borders and a strapwork clasp and lock, the whole on bracket feet, apparently unmarked, probably Indian 18th century, with an associated key, London 1884, height 10", length 13" Provenance: according to family tradition this casket has descended from Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell (1739-1791), who was famously taken prisoner during the American War of Independence and later exchanged for the American patriot, Ethan Allen. He later joined the British East English Company and served as Govenor of Madras in 1786-89. It seems likely that this rare survival dates from this period.

Lot 1

A rare and important George III period plane-wood and satinwood bombé shaped commode, circa 1770. with rosewood crossbanding and boxwood and ebony stringing, decorated with floral marquetry and neo-Classical arabesque and anthemion inlay work, the double serpentine top and half serpentine sides above three sans traverse drawers with brass ring handles and gilt brass escutcheons, raised on French style splay feet 125cm wide, 83cm high . Provenance: The Estate of the Hon. Ann L. Fraser.. The quality of this commode suggests that it was made in the London workshops of a skilled immigrant cabinet maker of the 1770's; a possible attribution being Pierre Langlois, with inlay work by Zurn. Note the 'transitional' nature of the decoration, from foliate marquetry to neo-Classical inlay, as well as the 'transitional' methods of construction, involving a French cabinet maker adapting to the demands of wealthy London clients. The mahogany drawer linings with the fronts veneered onto horizontally laid blocks follow stablished English techniques, while the lack of dust boards and overhanging drawer fronts are echoes of the maker's continental origins. The florid and finely cut inlay work married with expensive drawer linings in a pure commode form are an example of the immense impact that French design and craftsmanship had on the development of English furniture.. Two label fragments on the reverse of the commode inform us that it was offered as a lot in 'The Art Collections of the Late Viscount Leverhulme', sold by the Anderson Galleries in New York on February 24th 1926. The commode was lot 13 in part 5 of the sale and was sold to a Miss H Counihan, an agent, for $2,250.00 (£1,216). Lord Lever had purchased the commode from David L Isaacs, the esteemed Oxford Street antiques dealer, on July 15th, 1913 for £350 ($647). We know from the inventory mark in the catalogue that it was in the Lever's London residence, The Hill in Hampstead. At the time of the auction in 1926, the New York Times commented that Lever was a "un que figure among the great collectors … art purchases were a necessity to him … he surrounded himself with the finest he could buy!". Shortly after the sale, the commode was acquired by Lord Fraser of Allander. It has remained in the Fraser family collection by descent, now forming part of the estate of the Hon. Ann L. Fraser. . aBERDEEN - a Scottish provincial set of twenty-one kilt buttons attributed to the Balmoral Highlanders, with marks for James Lumsden and Company, Aberdeen, each of diamond shape with lion sergeant to centre on a hatched background, with integral loops to reverse which are marked around in the military outfitters style punch note: it is felt that these buttons are possibly part of the order for 24 new Balmoral Highlanders uniform placed by King Edward VII in 1904 for complete sets of uniform to be worn on parade and while on official duties around Balmoral Castle. The lion sergeant while being the crest of the Balmoral Highlanders is also the insignia of Scotland and used for other official uses. Either way a rare and interesting set of buttons

Lot 1

eLGIN - a rare Scottish provincial gold band by William Ferguson, marked WF, WF, ELGIN to inside of shank diameter 1.9cm footnote: This is a rare survival of Elgin gold. There is only one other piece of recorded Elgin gold which is struck with maker's mark only for Thomas Stewart and indeed may be from his time working in Inverness. This piece is now in the collection of the Falconer Museum Forres, Morayshire. Consequently lot 348 may be considered the only fully marked example of Elgin gold and also the only example available to private hands. It is also worth noting the relative rarity of Scottish provincial gold rings such as this. While such rings must have been a mainstay of the business of provincial silversmiths and jewellers, relatively few are known to survive.

Lot 1

The others include a sugar bowl, ex Murray Collection, lot 206, sold by Lyon & Turnbull, 20th August 2003 and a lemon strainer, now in a private North American collection. Public collections include a snuff horn, in the collection of the National Musuems of Scotland, meanwhile a tea pot stand and shoe buckles may be viewed in the collection of Perth Musuem and Art Gallery. the marks to this piece are also inte esting as they do not conclusively determine whether they are for Robert Dickson elder or younger. The town punch is of the earlier style used by Dickson elder while the makers punch is the more distinctive one used by Dickson younger. It is felt that it is probably made in the period where these makers overlap and infact were most likely using the same punches.
