Dickens (Charles). The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, 2 volumes, London: Chapman and Hall, 1837, volume I and II title-pages, 43 engraved plates by Robert Seymour, R.W. Buss, and Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz") including frontispiece and additional title (with 'Weller'), continuous pagination throughout both volumes, some toning, spotting and offsetting to plates, 19th-century dark green half calf, maroon morocco title label and volume number label to each spine surrounded by simple gilt decoration, 8voQTY: (2)NOTE:Eckel p.55; Hatton and Cleaver pp 1-88; Smith I:3, p.27; Yale/Gimbel A15.Rare two volume edition, with title-pages for each volume dated 1837, and text as per single volume issue. "Several copies of a two-volume issue of Pickwick exist. Circumstances regarding this issue are obscure, but Eckel and others, including Carr, McCutcheon, and Sawyer, have suggested that it preceded the one-volume issue, was abandoned before many copies were distributed, and did not appear in publisher's cloth. Titlepages for this two-volume issue were printed with the volume number (VOLUME I., II.) between PHIZ and the imprint" (Smith). "After the completion of this [monthly parts] issue a volume edition was published at the price of one guinea. Within the past ten years two copies in two volumes have appeared with an added title page for the volumes. As this was clearly an experiment it may be that only a few copies were so made up, and, being displeasing, were rejected" (Eckel).
