JOHN F KENNEDY; an exceptionally rare pencil autograph upon a matchbook of 'The President's House' matches. The book of matches was obtained by Fred Holmes, a percussionist with the Black Watch military band. On the 13th November 1963, The Black Watch Band were invited to The White House to perform for President Kennedy, Mrs Kennedy and their two children, Commonwealth ambassadors, their staff and several hundred school children that Mrs Kennedy had especially invited. Following the performance, the band members were allowed to walk around The White House where they could have as much whisky as they liked! After re-alighting the bus to leave The White House, President Kennedy and Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State boarded the vehicle to thank everyone for their performance. At least ten members of the band and including Fred, went straight up to the president asking him to sign anything they had available. When a pen failed to work, Dean Rusk, handed over a propelling pencil for the president to sign this matchbook. The matchbook remained the property of Fred until our present vendor obtained it. Included in the lot is a former newspaper article from 2013 discussing the matchbook and copies of letters from Jacqueline Kennedy discussing The Black Watch performance.

A FINE GERMAN ENAMEL BINDING, attributed to Georg Strauch, NureMberg, 17th c painted with Christ and the Virgin Mary surrounded by a wreath and bright orange tulips and other flowers, the corners and spine with further flowers, in chased copper gilt mounts with a contemporary edition of Ofsicium B. Mariae vir.g, title in red and black with engraved portrait of the Virgin, marbled endpapers, aeg and gauffered, Antwerp 1665, 7.7 x 11cm The present newly discovered binding, a small but beautiful example of 17th century German enamel work of the highest quality, is here firmly attributed to the Nuremberg miniaturist and enameller Georg Strauch (1613-1675). The distinctive bright colours, combined with the meticulous technique of a miniature painter is enlivened and enhanced by the white ground. Other enamels by Stauch are recorded on the work of both Augsburg and Nuremberg goldsmiths on various objects, such as canisters and several other rare bindings. An example of one of these is in the Musee Condée, Chantilly. It appears undoubtedly to be by the same hand as the present lot. See Schneeberger (P-F) Les Peintres sur Email Genevois au XVIIe et au XVIIIe Siecle, Geneva 1958, pp93-4, fig 13. Another, very similar, slightly larger binding attributed to Strauch, painted with allegorical scenes of Charity and Felicitas with Justice, with a provenance from its ownership by William Boyd Carpenter, Bishop of Ripon (1841-1918) Chaplain to Queen Victoria and subsequently in other distinguished collections including that of Grace Whitney Hoff (1862-1938) was sold Christie's, 3 June 2014, lot 373. ++Binding detached, the upper board with internal scratch and tiny faint hairline crack possible caused in firing otherwise very fine, book detached, incomplete, lacking some leaves and all after p674, text block weak and strengthened with glue

A RARE WEDGWOOD OVAL BLUE AND WHITE JASPER PYROMETER MEDALLION AND THIRTY WEDGWOOD JASPER AND JASPER DIP CAMEOS INCLUDING THREE COLOUR EXAMPLES, 1784 AND LATER pyrometer medallion 5 x 3.5cm, glued to velvet covered board in late Victorian ebonised, gold painted and gadrooned frame, 26 x 41cm overallProvenance: Alan Paul Good (1906-1953); thence by descent to the present vendor.Entries on the 5th & 12th June 1784 in Wedgwood's Oven Book record the production of 2 dz [dozen] and 3 dz [dozen] 'Blue and white Lybols Jos Wedgwood F.F.S.'It is logical to conclude, especially since the edge is straight and not curved or chamfered, that they were made to be inset into the top of the boxes that contained the pyrometer sets invented by Josiah Wedgwood to measure the high temperatures in the kilns. It is not known whether the present example is numbered on the reverse (since it is stuck onto the velvet covered board) but that in the Wedgwood Museum is inlaid on the reverse "No 110" and another, recently sold at auction (Skinner, Boston, July 14, 2018) was numbered 144; see the exhibition catalogue The Genius of Wedgwood, Victoria & Albert Museum 1995, No, 1363.++ A collection assembled in the early 20th c, the pyrometer medallion and most of the others in fine condition. A COLLECTION OF RARE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURY SPANISH JEWELLERYA 17TH CENTURY DIAMOND PENDANT/BROOCH, IBERIAN ORIGIN, CIRCA 1690Designed as a stylised bow of open foliate design, set with variously-cut diamonds of grey tint, within closed-back settings, later brooch fitting, mounted in gold, dimensions 5.3x3.3cmIn the sixteenth and well into the seventeenth century, Europeans sourced their gold and precious stones primarily from the Orient, with Goa being the central hub through which these transactions traded. Much of this trade was then imported through Lisbon in Portugal, where many French, German, Italian and Spanish jewellers based their workshops as a result.Originally the preserve of the religious classes, exotic materials were used to create devotional material such as pendant crosses and rosaries. However, this trend began to change towards the end of the 16th century as techniques in gemstone cutting developed and jewellers discovered the dazzling possibilities of the cut and polished stones. Gemstones took on a new importance and prominence, with gold and precious metals being relegated to the role of providing settings and surrounds.By the seventeenth century, the art of the faceted stone had been thoroughly embraced and perfected. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the role of jewellery changed dramatically as a result. A once figurative symbol of religion became the decorative display of the rich and powerful, in turn unleashing all artistic inhibitions and allowing the art of design to truly begin to flourish. At the same time and as fashions continued to develop, jewellery became a far more feminine accessory. Highly influenced by the popular fascination with naturalism which became steadily more popular throughout the Georgian era, abstract and elaborate floral motifs adorned almost everything. Also exceptionally popular at this time was the bow brooch, just like the lot on offer in this sale. Inspired by the silk and velvet bows used to suspend pendants and crosses from the neck and bodice, the bow brooch, usually woven in an intricate filigree of gold and silver and highlighted with precious stones, emphasised the décolletage. It was usually paired with girandole earrings with three to five almond shaped drops, again similar to those illustrated in lot 21.Aided by the discovery of large deposits of gold in Brazil at the start of the eighteenth century and the subsequent discovery of vast diamond mines there, production of exquisite jewels continued in abundance across Europe well into the late 19th century, with advances in techniques and fashions continuing to boost the trend.
