(41.5cm) high Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1962, No.1191 Eric Winters represented the fifth generation of sculptors in the Winters family, learning sculpture under the experienced eye of his father Leo Hill Winters, a carver and letter designer. He went on to study at St. Martins School of Art and in April 1939 at the age of 18 was awarded the only open scholarship to attend the Royal Academy Sculpture School where he was the youngest student Eric`s studies were interrupted during the war years, only being resumed from 1947-52 when the Academy re-opened. His achievements in his student days were most impressive and include four Landseer prizes for figurative sculpture (three in 1947 and one in 1950), representation of Great Britain and bronze medal in the XVIth Olympiad Sport in Art exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (1948) and travelling scholarship to France: The Edward Stott Award for a group of figures (1949) Winters exhibited annually at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition throughout the 1950s. Driven by his early success in portraiture and genuine passion for this branch of sculpture, Eric was already starting to pave the way for the formation of a new society even before completing his studies at the Royal Academy Schools. He had a close rapport with several of his professors including Sir Charles Wheeler, Maurice Lambert and Alfred Hardiman whose influence and support were significant at the time The newly formed Society of Portrait Sculptors presented its first annual exhibition from November 1952 to December 1953. Winters was a keen exhibitor at the Society`s exhibitions in London and elsewhere, contributing to many very fine portraits over the years, probably his most well known head is that of the footballer Danny Blanchflower modelled from life and exhibited at the Society`s 1960 annual exhibition

The shirt was original given to John Flood and in 1951 he met the 1951 Celtic Scottish Cup-winning side on a Tour of North America and that is when he had the shirt autographed by that side. The shirt was then given to the vendor`s brother by Flood who held onto it for many years before it to his brother (the vendor) who had is displayed at the Celtic Football Club Museum. Lot 733

AN EXTREMELY RARE STEIFF RED MOHAIR TEDDY BEAR with black boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, white backing with remains of a soft red mohair pile, swivel head, jointed limbs with felt pads, hump and inoperative growler, circa 1908-15.1/2in. (39.5cm) high (almost completely bald, damage to back of left arm, some glue repairs and pads recovered using glue) Provenance: This bear was given to the owner when she was a little girl of 4 in 1978. There is a hint of a romantic past; her aunt`s friend was called Delphene, who is believed to have had Romany gypsy roots. She lived in a static caravan behind the current owner`s grandmother`s pub. As a small girl the owner remembers visiting the caravan and it was like an Aladdin`s cave, full of antiques and collectables. The owner recalls, "Delphene had long black hair, and her place used to make me think of a fortune tellers tent! In a chest on the floor I found this red teddy and fell in love with him completely; every time I visited I went straight to the chest. I thought he had this adorable face; he had a smile in his eyes and mouth. He was completely bald, but I did not notice this, I thought he was utterly beautiful bald. His belly would rattle (this is his inoperative growler) and I used to think he had sweets inside." After a number of visits, the current owner plucked up enough courage and asked if she could keep him. After a slight hesitance Delphene said yes and he soon became a favourite toy. She took him everywhere and slept with him. "He was definitely the first toy I really loved and who seemed so important to me, like he was a little person and my friend." Notes: This extraordinary bear is one of only two known red Steiff bears; he is the taller brother of Alfonzo, who is thirteen inches high. It has been suggested by Steiff that Alfonzo, Elliot (the blue Steiff sold by Christie`s in 1993) and presumably this bear, were part of a sample of twenty-four sent to Harrods in London in 1908. This makes three surviving examples from the original group. Alfonzo the only other known red Steiff who everybody knows; was sold by Christie`s in 1989 for £12,100. He is perhaps the most famous antique Teddy Bear in the world and resides at Teddy Bears of Witney owned by Ian Pout. Elliott, a blue Steiff sold for £49,500 (again by Christie`s in 1993) went to the Ydessa Hendeles Foundation, and now lives in Canada amongst one of the finest bear collections in the world. This nameless bear is rare, important and will undoubtedly find his own fame. The buyer will have the pleasure of naming him.
