WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Sport, Scotland, Edinburgh, Engraved Silver Medal, 1867, for the Royal Patent Gymnasium, “First Prize for throwing the Hammer won by C R Bauchope”, raised wreath border, 51mm, ornate suspender and ring; Keith, Class Games, Silver Medal for Dancing, 1892, “Won by A Davidson, raised floral border, 42.5mm, Birmingham Hallmark, maker James Fenton & Co, suspension loop and ring. Both very fine. (2) The Royal Patent Gymnasium, “The New Wonder of Edinburgh”, was an open air gymnasium opened in 1865. Its most famous ‘ride’ was the “Great Sea Serpent” a patent rotary boat which allowed up to 600 people to row simultaneously. In winter the grounds were prepared for ice skaters. This early medal is a rare survivor.

WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Sport, Olympic Games, USA, 10th Olympiad, Los Angeles, 1932, by Giuseppe Cassioli (1865-1942), Victory holds palm in her left hand and winner’s crown in her right, rev Olympic champion carried in triumph by the crowd within the stadium, 55mm. Matt surface, extremely fine and very rare. A total of 93 silver medals were awarded for the Games. The Medal’s design was first used in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games and continued to be used till 1268.

About very fine and very rare. ex David Sellwood Collection, The New York Sale XXXIV, Markov / Baldwin / M&M / Goldberg, January 2015, lot 337 Sellwood tentatively assigned this issue to Phraates II. However, given that Phriapatius had already been divinised around 170 BC (see lot 333 with ΘΕΟY) and that the final beardless and bashlyk type Drachms were minted around 148/7 BC, it is likely that one of the two sons of Phriapatius, Phraates I or Mithradates I, minted the S 10.17 Drachms with “Son of a Divine Father”.
