More than 12,000 Allied prisoners perished during its construction, along with at least 90,000 Asian labourers On Chalker’s release in 1945 he joined the Australian Army HQ in Bangkok as a war artist; some of his work was used in evidence at the Tokyo war trials. On his return to England he resumed his studies, graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1951.For more than a decade after his repatriation he could not sleep properly. Nor could he look at his drawings and paintings: it would take 40 years for him to take his works out of the box in which they were stored. In 1950, after teaching History of Art at Cheltenham Ladies’ College he became principal of Falmouth College of Art and, in 1957, principal of West of England College of Art, where he remained until his retirement in the mid-1980 Measures: 88cms high x 122cms wide x 9cms deep.

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulian, ca. 350 BCE. A ceramic fish plate of a classic pinax or pinakion (meaning tablet for its shape) form with three fish painted via the red-figure technique with added fugitive white and yellow details, the trio swimming around a central garum (fish sauce) recess with rays, the perimeter of the downturned rim adorned with a lovely band of spiraling waves, the dimpled disk from elevated on a raised pedestal. Size: 8.625" W x 2.625" H (21.9 cm x 6.7 cm)Fish plates were initially produced in Athens during the late fifth century BCE characterized by fish with bellies are oriented towards the outside rim of the plate. While in Athens the palette was limited to a red clay fabric and black gloss slip with only rare uses of white overpainting, later examples from Greek settlers in Southern Italy (Taranto, Paestum, Capua, and Cumae) were more colorful with added white and yellow pigments. The South Italian fish plates also departed from Attic examples in that they were characterized by decoration in which the fish's bellies were oriented inwards towards the sauce cup at the center of the plate, as we see in this example.Christies label on underside of pedestal foot. Also comes with sale ticket labeled "25-Oct-16 Sale 12257 Lot 78 Christie's" Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection; Ex-Christie's, Oct. 25, 2016 auction (sale #12257), Lot 78. Lot 35

Western Europe, France to Germany, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. A very rare Celtic "rainbow cup" gold stater. According to popular belief, rainbows left a piece of gold - the rainbow cups - behind where they had touched the ground. 7.5 grams of about 16kt gold. Size: .625" W (1.6 cm)Gold coins like this very often surfaced on fields after heavy rainfalls. The cup is actually an upside down torque often worn by wealthy Celts. Inside the torque sits 6 rounded discs whose meaning is not well known. Additionally, the symbolism of the opposite side can only be guessed at due to its abstract nature. This unfamiliar, abstract and often purely ornamental imagery was often considered primitive and barbaric up until the 19th century. Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005 Condition: About VF All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 36o

Asia Minor, Yortan culture or related in Western Anatolia, Early Bronze Age, ca. 2700 to 2300 BCE. Comprised of lustrous blackware, this is a skin-bag shaped jar with fine-line incised decoration. The shape of the vessel includes a thick strap handle on the back, a slightly pointed end, and a round, flared spout opposite it. Flowing around the body from either side of the handle are two slightly raised bands that give the impression of raised rope. The fine-line decoration forms a border of lines and dots around the neck and then three square, bordered areas - one with an "X" design and the other two with swastikas, which were an ancient symbol of luck that originated in the region. Comes with custom stand. Size: 7.3" L x 3.3" W x 5" H (18.5 cm x 8.4 cm x 12.7 cm); height on stand: 6.45" (16.4 cm).Ancient Western Anatolia is famous for a number of large ruins, most notably Troy (Hisarlik), but many mysteries remain. The Yortan culture are known through a burial site in the valley of Bakir Cai that has not been well-studied. Adults and children were buried, crouched, in large terracotta storage containers; around them were placed a great deal of pottery in the form of jugs, jars, and occasionally bowls, much of it blackware just like this piece. An incredibly rare and well-preserved example from a little-known culture! Provenance: Ex-private East Coast, USA collection Condition: End opposite spout has been repaired/restored, but it is almost impossible to see. Truly amazing condition for its age. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #120777

Lot 3n

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca.3rd century BCE to 2nd century CE. A very rare, miniature red and turquoise paste glass vessel of a sweet form comprised of a raised round base, a globular body, narrow cylindrical neck, ring-shaped collared rim, and a single handle bridging rim to shoulder. Its surface is elegantly decorated with a meandering sinuous line of turquoise blue that complements the rich russet red hues perfectly. Size: 1.5" in diameter x 1.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm)Egyptian paste glass was invented approximately 7,000 years ago. It is a material containing very little or no clay but can be modeled, carved, or pressed into molds. The blue-green turquoise decoration on this piece lead one to wonder whether it was believed to possess apotropaic effects, as blue-green glazed stones and blue-green faience carved and sculpted miniatures in the ancient Near East and Egypt were believed to possess protective powers. Provenance: Ex- private Orange County, CA collection acquired before 2000 Condition: Several stable pressure cracks as shown. White mineral deposits. #120958

Lot 73a

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, ca. 500 to 950 CE. A magnificent example of a ceremonial hacha depicting an armadillo, hand-carved from a single piece of stone of red-brown hues. Most hachas represent human heads, although the skulls and heads of animals, such as jaguars, birds, bats, deer and monkeys, are also depicted. This representation of a complete armadillo, however, is quite rare and special; the endearing animal is curled up in a seated position and raising his paws so as to eat a tasty treat, its armored body meticulously delineated with horny plates. The word armadillo was adopted from the Spanish term meaning 'little armed one'. As an hacha associated with the Mesoamerican ballgame, the creation of an armadillo effigy is very apropos, as its armor of horny plates signified strength and protection, traits that would very much benefit any ballgame player, though the 'ballgame' was typically of a ritualistic nature. Custom stand. Size: 8.5" W x 10.625" H (21.6 cm x 27 cm); 13.5" H (34.3 cm) on stand Hachas were associated with the ritual Mesoamerican ball game, though they were not actually part of the player's equipment. Instead these were worn during ritualistic ceremonies related to the game. The name stems from the fact that they were believed to be axe-heads; hence the term hacha (Spanish for axe). Based on ceramic figurines and stone carvings, some authors have proposed that they were meant to be attached to yugos (yokes). Others suggest that some of the hachas could have served as ball court markers. While their actual use is still unclear to scholars, they are often associated with yugos in burials. Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection; ex-Harry Franklin Gallery, Beverly Hills, CA 1974. Condition: Intact with nice mineral deposits. Natural surface recesses inherent to the stone. #121158

Lot 74

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, Remojadas, ca. 550 to 950 CE. An outstanding example of a Sonriente terracotta figure, the most well-known of Remojadas examples, featuring a traditional wide smile revealing filed teeth on a characteristically almost triangular shaped face, attached to a child-like body with outstretched arms and displayed palms, and highly decorated with an elaborate headdress featuring birds carved in low relief on the front band, beaded pectoral with a zoomorphic pendant, and lower garment trimmed with stylized geometric motifs. Custom stand. Size: 8.5" W x 14.25" H (21.6 cm x 36.2 cm)Sonrientes are rare in Mesoamerican art and scholars suggest that they played a special role in Remojadas society due to their rarity. Why that smile? Well some scholars believe that it was hallucinogenically produced perhaps by ingesting alcoholic pulque while others such as Miller and Taube suggest that the smiling figures were actually performers. Provenance: Ex-Dr. George Wald, Cambridge, MA, acquired 1960s. Dr. Wald was the recipient of the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Condition: Expected surface wear, arms and head reattached and other possible areas of repair and restoration. Still a strong example. #120230
