From research, this clock is said to have been illustrated in an article first published in Archaeologia Aeliana in 1925 in a paper titled North Country Clockmakers of the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries written by C.LReid, a Newcastle Goldsmith & Jeweller (Trading as Reid & Sons). The appendix which first appeared in the 1925 book states: ''Another 365 day clock, made about 1770, was purchased by the Newcastle Corporation in 1885 and set up in the Mayor's Chamber, in the Town Hall''. The article is said to include a few details of this clock and a few notes about the clockmaker John Walker. John Walker from London set up business in Newcastle Upon Tyne about 1754 and died in 1773. He is recorded as advertising himself as a clockmaker making all types of complicated mechanisms such as perpetual month going clocks and clocks with tidal dials. He is remembered for many good clocks and also an invention which he spent eight years perfecting, which was a wheel cutter that cut and rounded wheel teeth. Another feature of Walker's unusual clocks is that the strikework has a vertical worm-driven fly. 14.10.19 Case with cracks and chips in parts, trunk door with cracks, glass is cracked, plinth with inlay missing in parts, dial is discoloured and stained, movement looks complete, with pendulum and two weights.

A very rare French silver open-faced key-wound quarter repeating pocket watch with a double-wheel Debaufre-type escapementBy Louis Tavernier, Paris, circa 1810The case with plain band, ring pendant and glass covers, push/repeat at 2 o'clock, with silver engine-turned dial with Roman chapters, enclosing an engine-turned centre with small rectangular signature block beneath the XII signed L. TAVERNIER, blued steel Breguet moon hands, the gilt Lepine calibre movement, plain steel three-armed balance, sprung 'parachute' balance jewel, quarter repeat on two polished steel gongs of rectangular section53 mm diam.Louis Tavernier (1754-1840), was the son of the renoned watchmaker Jean-Louis Tavernier and worked closely with Abraham-Louis Breguet. He is recorded as Mâitre in 1788, appointed Horologer du duc d'Orleans in 1790, he was at Rue Richelieu and was succeeded by Hury in 1820. Debaufre-type frictional rest escapements in a Lepine calibre are extremely rare as usually they are found only in a full-plate movement. Here, in its quality of design and execution, Tavernier has produced a masterpiece to parallel the work of Breguet, in whose circle he worked.

A Fine and Rare Victorian parcel-gilt bronze four-glass quarter striking giant carriage clock Signed Alexander Guillaume, London, No. 861, probably McCabe workshops or associatesCirca 1855The case surmounted with a shaped handle above a bevelled glass panel, stepped pediment, above bevelled glass sides and glazed dial, with canted angles, mounted with cast foliage, on a stepped plinth cast with scrolls and foliage, bronze lift-out back with shuttered winding apertures, hand set and platform regulation, the arched gilt brass dial engraved all over with foliage, Roman numerals and inset seconds subsidiary at the XII, trefoil hour hand, inscribed in a reserve below the VI ALEXR GUILLAUME LONDON 861, the high-quality twin train chain fusée movement with maintaining power, high-grade platform lever escapement with cut bi-metallic compensated balance, exceptional vase-shaped pillars with finely-turned fins, quarter striking on two blued steel gongs; on a carved oak breakfront plinth The clock: 28cm highPROVENANCE:A Hampshire family, since the mid-19th centuryBy descentThe property of a gentlemanBy descent to the current vendorThis clock was no doubt commissioned by Louis-Alexander Guillaume, acting as agent for a retail client. He is known primarily as a watchmaker. A native of Neuchatel, Switzerland, he came to London in 1835 and is recorded at 24 Spencer Street, Northampton Square, Clerkenwell. He died on 10 January 1873, in his 60th year (see The Horological Journal, March 1873, p. 84). An identical clock, signed Klaftenberger, 157 Regent Street, London, also with quarter striking movement and high-grade platform lever escapement, was advertised in the Antiquarian Horological Journal, June 1983, p. 119. It is also illustrated in Derek Roberts, Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks, Atglen 1993, p. 345, fig. 23-26.The fashion for large bronze and gilt carriage clocks during the mid-19th century was satisfied by McCabe, Dent and latterly Frodsham. Their design, quality and execution were of the utmost quality and no doubt a status symbol for clientele. Comparison can be made to signed pieces by McCabe, such as No. 2833 (sold Christie's, London, 18 November 2010, lot 101), which has the distinctive shaped handle, albeit with fluting. The Guillaume clock, with its shallow arch for the dial, with the inset seconds at the XII, all within the most superbly engraved foliate design and flanked by the distictive canted angles, would support production from the same workshop. Another quarter striking clock by McCabe 2927 (sold Bonhams, London, 11 December 2013, lot 106) has a sumptous finely-chased gilt bronze case. The handle is of the same pattern, with the faceted centre part and twin double rings. The stepped moulding to the rectangular pediment, especially the overhang, is identical. McCabe's canted angles have a shaped 'claw' at the top, whilst the base is finished with a scrolled volute. The Guillaume clock includes the same canted angles, with the addition of a rosette and deeply-chased pendant flowers to each angle, all supported on a gilt bronze foliate-chased scrolling plinth. McCabe is not known to have diverged from his use of lever escapements for these 'travelling' clocks as chronometer escapements would be more susceptible to damage. The virtuosity of the engraving found on these giant carriage clocks, as well as clocks by Thomas Cole, are related and point to a vibrant school of talented engravers in London.

Lot 697

A rare Chinese ormolu and paste-set mantel clock In the style of John Mottram or Henry Borrell, case and movement Guangzhou workshops, 19th centuryThe case with an arched pediment and turned finial on a foliate mount, above canted scrolled angles with beaded and foliate pierced brackets, the front and sides with engraved decoration, the back door with a pierced panel, paste-set bezel with convex glass, above the 4in. circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, gilt spade hands and sweep centre seconds, the twin train chain fusée movement with verge escapement and scroll engraved backplate37cm highCOMPARATIVE LITERATURE: Ian White, English Clocks for the Chinese Markets, Ticehurst 2012, p. 223, pl. 8.12Richard Barder, The Georgian Bracket Clock 1714-1830, Woodbridge 1993, p. 173, pl. 29It was the Emperor Kangxi (d. 1722) who developed a strong interest in watches and clocks, building a large collection. However, his grandson, Qianlong, whose dynasty spanned most of the 18th Century (1735-1795), with a huge budget, collected throughout his 60-year reign. This resulted in a substantial expansion for English merchants and makers. An observation by the missionary Valentine Chalier in 1736 ' As for clocks, the Imperial palace is stuffed with them…..there must be more than 4000 from the best masters of Paris and London…'. As Dr. White notes in his extensive book English Clocks for the Eastern Markets, Qianlong was simply the greatest collector of Western clockwork there has ever been. From the 1750s onwards, commercial activity in the West focused on objects that could be exported to ease the balance of payments between East and West, fuelled by the heavy demand in the West for exotic Asian wares, such as porcelain, textiles, lacquer and of course tea. The form of case is known as the 'scroll angle' design and was most used by Henry Borrell and John Mottram. Two similar clocks, with variations to the one offered, were sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, Magnificent Clocks for the Chinese Imperial Court from the Nezu Museum, 27 May 2008, lot 1512 & 1515. Another similar by Mottram was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 6 December 2011, lot 284.

Lot 186

A Rare Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds Wristwatch, signed Rolex, Oyster, Perpetual, Officially Certified Chronometer, model: Explorer, ref: 6610, 1960, (calibre 1030) lever movement signed and numbered N726168, adjusted to five positions and temperature, butterfly rotor, overcoil hairspring, later 1960's Rolex glossy black finish service dial with luminous Arabic, triangular and baton markers, gilt finished outer minute track with TSwissT mark below 6 for tritium, Mercedes luminous hands, screw down crown, screw back stamped inside Montres Rolex SA and numbered 6610, dated II.60, case serial number 580051, later Rolex stainless steel oyster bracelet with a deployant clasp numbered 62523 H18 and dated P11 for 1991, 34mm wide see illustrations This Rolex reference was first released on the market in the mid-1950's. It incorporated the new chronometer rated calibre 1030 movement. The newly released reference 6610 had a slimmer movement design which meant the screw down bubbleback was also more refined and slimmer in design. Rolex started to change the dials in the early 1960's and originally used radium luminous (later known to be hazardous) and were marked below 6 on the dial as Swiss. This current example has an early Rolex service dial which appears to have been changed probably in the mid-late 1960's, just a few years after this watch was made. These replacement upgrade service dials were changed in the Rolex workshops and marked below 6 TSwissT for tritium luminous. This was a newly tested safe luminous compound which is still used in today's watch market.   02.10.19  Case with surface scratches and small dents to the sides, bezel and lugs, case back edge with some small opening tool marks, please note that the bracelet is a counterfeit and not by Rolex, bracelet with surface scratches, clasp with minor dents, the Rolex crown is screwing down correctly, plexi glass with scratches and with cracks, in my opinion this is an early replaced Rolex service dial probably replaced in the mid-to late 1960's, luminous hour markers have faded but have a nice patina and with slight shrinkage to the luminous, gilt minute track in good condition and clear, dial overall looks in nice condition, later Rolex service hands would possibly have been changed at the same time, hands with staining marks which are visible under an eyeglass, hand setting correctly, movement needs cleaning, movement in going order.
