Rare Victoria Cross winner Cecil Buckley VC signed piece from a letter, with few lines of original text. He was the first winner of the VC to be actually gazetted on 24 February 1857. On 29 May 1855 in the Sea of Azov, Crimea, Lieutenant Buckley of HMS Miranda, with a lieutenant (Hugh Talbot Burgoyne) from HMS Swallow and a gunner (John Robarts) from HMS Ardent, volunteered to land at a beach where the Russian army were in strength. They were out of covering gunshot range of the ships offshore and met considerable enemy opposition, but managed to set fire to corn stores and ammunition dumps and destroy enemy equipment. On 3 June Lieutenant Buckley carried out another raid with a boatswain (Henry Cooper) from Miranda. They landed at the town of Taganrog and were successful in destroying enemy equipment and stores, whilst being under enemy fire. Good Condition. SVEND HAMMERSHOI - a rare Art Nouveau Danish silver vase, fluted stylised form with relief embossed floral decoration and pierced stem, made and marked by Holger Kyster (1872-1944), height 11.5cm, 6.2oz Notes: In 1925, Hammershøi (together with Holger Kyster) was awarded a gold medal at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in Paris for his silverware. Hammershøi became a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1925 and in 1944 he received the Thorvaldsen Medal. Very good overall condition, no obvious damage or repair, body has some very light dents and surface scratches all over, high points are also very lightly rubbed, silver is heavy gauge and sits perfectly flat, marks on underside are clear.

The inscription by the author reads 'Sr., since I wrote this booke my partners have provd [sic.] to be Rascals. They have basly [sic.] abused the medicine, and have cheated me - I live in Great New Street by Fetter-Lane'.

Our rooms have sold the only two copies at auction (one lacking half-title), both in 2018.

Banking.- Mr. Chamber's Statement of Facts, respecting his Banking concern, single sheet, folds, light dust-soiling, W. Glindon, [c.1825] § [Extract of an amendment to the Bankruptcy Bill and a plea by the Chambers family], single sheet, signed verso at foot by two members of the Chambers family, folds, [c.1825]; and a broadside advertising a benefit concert held by Miss Mary Radcliff Chambers, v.s. (3)⁂ Three rare survivals relating to the bankruptcy of the bank Chambers and Sons in 1824, and the subsequent distress of Abraham Henry Chambers, the senior member of the family. The family appealed to Parliament for an amendment to the Bankruptcy Act to exclude debtors who were over 70 from imprisonment. Mary Chambers, known as 'The Banker's Daughter' became the sole provider for the family and held a benefit concert with the support of her aristocratic peers.

Merlin, 1825. ⁂ Rare in commerce. The sale was made up of 4364 lots and according to a contemporary note to half-title 'Ce catalogue a produit f.117,000.'. Louis Mathieu Langlès (1763-1824), was one of the leading orientalists of his time and conservator of oriental manuscripts at the then Bibliothèque du Roi.

Sold not subject to return. ⁂ Rare in the original boards. 'The Dibdinian age may be aptly said to terminate with the dispersal of the gigantic library accumulated by Richard Heber (1773-1833), a bibliomaniac if ever there was one... From 1800 to 1830, he purchased at every London sale, either in his own name or through agents like Triphook and Thorpe...' (De Ricci). The sales comprised 54,208 lots. Pech, 1702.⁂ Astruc's rare first work, his medical dissertation published when he was a 19 year old student at Montpellier medical school. He later wrote the first major treatise on venereal diseases and a natural history of the Languedoc region.
