Lot 20d

Greece, Hellenistic, c. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A stupendous - dare I say PERFECT - core-formed glass amphoriskos used by the ancients to hold perfumed oil. This vessel boasts an exceptionally elegant form with a piriform body, twin trail handles joining the shoulders to the long tubular neck which rises to an everted, disk rim, all upon a droplet shaped globule. The decoration of this piece is simply breathtaking. Note how the deep cobalt blue body is wound with golden tangerine orange-yellow thread-like trails applied in a close-knit zigzag or feathered pattern around the body. Threadlike horizontal golden trails also encircle the shoulder, neck, lower body, and rim (the disc form of which is actually aubergine in color). A divine work of glass art to be treasured for its impeccable form, beautiful hues, and sophisticated technique. Size: 5.9" H (15 cm); 6.125" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.Core-formed glass represents one of the earliest and most widely-used forms of glass manufacture in the ancient world. The production of glass objects seems to have originated in western Asia around 1500 BCE, followed by an explosion in the Egyptian industry in the fifteenth century BCE. At around the same time, glass begins to be mentioned in written sources from Mesopotamia, suggesting its growing popularity. However, it was the Greeks and Romans who perfected the technology of glass making and considered it an art form. In around the middle of the sixth century, a technological breakthrough led to the creation of the first glass vessels and allowed the industry to become established in its own right. This was the core-forming technique, which was to remain the dominant method for the creation of vessels in the ancient world until the advent of glass-blowing in the first century BCE.The technique involved shaping a core of clay and sand in the form of the vessel around a metallic rod. Then, molten glass was either trailed onto the core using a tool, or from dipping the core directly into a container of molten glass. To achieve a smooth surface, the vessel was continually reheated and rolled on a flat slab. Finally, the metallic rod was removed and, once the vessel had slowly cooled down, the core material was scraped out. The trailing of the vessel in molten glass led to aesthetically pleasing decorations in zigzag or feather patterns, in favoured colours of turquoise, white, cobalt blue, yellow and brown, like the present piece. This delicate and intricate technique limited the size of the vessel; as such, these objects were often miniature forms of well-known vase types, designed to hold perfumes, scented oils and cosmetics. The present example is unusual for its scale, and for its exquisite state of preservation, maintaining a vivid and shiny surface. The name of the vessel means 'little amphora', derived from the traditional vessel used to store wine or oil. Glass continued to remain a luxury material, although the production of small vessels for daily use extended its reach to a greater audience. The Hellenistic period, spanning the era from the conquests of Alexander the Great (356-323 BCE) to the inception of Roman imperial rule at the end of the first century BCE, was characterized by its love of luxury items created by master craftsmen for an increasingly affluent society. Glassmaking in its current form reached the pinnacle of its manufacture, with the exploration of different techniques and increasingly beautiful designs and forms. These core-formed miniature vessels of the period capture a rare glimpse of this extraordinary epoch and represent the last of their kind; the discovery of glassblowing in the Syro-Palestinian region in the first century BCE eclipsed the core-forming technique to become the preferred method of glass production for centuries to come.A core-formed amphoriskos of similar scale and design is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 17.194.597, second to mid-first century BCE).Cf: H. Tait, ed., Five Thousand Years of Glass, (London, 1991); On glass production in the Hellenistic Age, J. Henderson, Ancient Glass: An Interdisciplinary Exploration (Cambridge, 2013) pp. 203-226. Lot 3a

Egypt, early Ptolemaic Period, ca. 4th century BCE. The upper part of a faience votive statue of Taweret. Taweret, "The Great Female One", is a blend of hippopotamus, crocodile, and human features. Those two animals are some of the fiercest known to the ancient Egyptians from the Nile Delta, and the goddess is a fierce protector of pregnant and nursing women, called upon to protect women in childbirth. This example is particularly detailed and a rare deep forest green. She holds what looks like an ankh before her knees. Size: 1.55" W x 3.7" H (3.9 cm x 9.4 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Knoxville, Tennessee, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s Condition: Lower third of body is lost, with a hairline crack on the back of the head that has been repaired. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 43

Roman, Republican Period, ca. late 1st century BCE. A marble head of an elderly man from a relief - similar to Republican portraits of Julius Caesar found on coinage of the state (the Roman Senate made Caesar the first living Roman whose image was portrayed on state coinage in 44 BCE). Note his clean-shaven haggard visage, wrinkles upon his forehead, folded baggy skin on this neck, and a receding hairline with closely cropped hair that is combed forward from the crown of his head and finely delineated with incised wavy locks. The veristic rendering of his visage is a product of keen observation on the part of the sculptor. Note the furrows across his forehead, those deep-set, large, almond-shaped eyes beneath full brows, his pursed thin lips flanked by nasolabial creases, and overall gaunt face with pronounced cheek bones and pointy chin. Further conveying his advanced age are the wrinkles surrounding the Adam's apple on his neck. The epitome of Republican "warts and all" portraiture! Size: 10" H (25.4 cm); 16.25" H (41.3 cm) on included custom stand. This remarkably realistic representation suggests that the portrait may have been created during his lifetime or very soon after death, perhaps taken from a death mask. The sculptors' "warts and all" approach which may seem unflattering to modern eyes, was extremely popular during the late Republic and Early Empire periods. Such realistic portraits were created to preserve records of elite members of society such as senators, generals, and other high-ranking officials. In the Classical world, portraiture served two main functions - all depended upon whether the subject was dead or alive. Images of the deceased were created for ancestral worship and kept in a private or family context. Ancestral busts preserved the individual's contributions and legitimized the family line. Sometimes masks of important ancestors were worn at funeral processions. Images of the living, on the other hand, were placed in public contexts, as a means of commemorating the individual's might, oftentimes honoring a military victory or public benefaction. For example, sculptures of Augustus and successive emperors served to advertise and affirm their power.Cf. a similar sized portrait of an old man from a tomb relief, said to be from Rome, now in the Metropolitan Museum, inventory number 17.230.133.A portrait bust depicting Julius Caesar that is very similar in style and likeness to this example hammered at 160,000 Euro at Gorny & Mosch (June 2014) - https://www.gmcoinart.de/auction/STEINSKULPTUR_Portr%C3%A4t%20des%20Gaius%20Julius%20Caesar.aspx?los=10&lager=00108&ActiveID=106&lang=enThe description translates as follows: "In 44 BC. the Roman Senate voted to make Caesar the first living Roman to be portrayed on the coinage of the state. Immediately, the Roman mint began to churn out money with variations on the new theme, the dictators portrait. Nevertheless the research seems to be still quite diffuse as an official effigy was not published during his lifetime. The portraits that appear on republican coins can be referred for comparison, although they show great individuality of features. But despite all differences they have three important characteristics in common: They show Caesars head in profile right, a haggard face with wrinkled forehead, prominent nose and a long narrow neck with folds of baggy skin. This is exactly what Suetonius relates (Divus Iulius, Cap. 45):while his baldness was a disfigurement which troubled him greatly, since he found that it was often the subject of the gibes of his detractors. Because of it he used to comb forward his scanty locks from the crown of his head . The present marble head reflects the high cheekbones with the sunken cheeks, the aquiline nose, the broad mouth and the individual wrinkled skin of the neck. All of these features are comparably found in authenticated portraits as well (cf. E. Boehringer, Der Caesar von Acireale [1933] Taf. 25-29). Exactly for these reasons the designation of this portrait head as Gaius Iulius Caesar appears to be secured. As it bears all the characteristics of republican portrait art it must have been created during the dictators lifetime or very soon after his death. It originates presumably from a statue. Especially in Asia Minor Caesar gained great popularity by freeing the cities from the Roman tax collectors excessive demands as well as by granting privileges to the leading municipalities. The cities repaid the Clementia Caesaris with the erection of statues and other honours (cf. K. Tuchelt, Frühe Denkmäler Roms in Kleinasien 1: Roma und Romagistrate [1979] Nr. 45-54; statues in Alabanda, Ephesos, Pergamon, Phokaia and Smyrna). In most cases the only reminders of them are the inscriptions on their bases whilst the presevation of a head like this one is a very rare exception." Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s Condition: Losses to back, sides, neck, and high-pointed areas such as the nose and ears as shown. Expected surface wear commensurate with age, though the visage is still quite strong with realistic features and countenance. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 67

Europe, Iberia (Spain and Portugal), Celtic-Iberian period, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A finely carved stone rendering of a ram, laying down in a prone position. The ram's face is skillfully delineated with incised circular eyes, curvilinear markings across the snout, and spiraled horns in bold relief - the body presents interesting target-like concentric circular motifs - two on each side. In addition, running chevron patterns further adorn the back of the ram's neck and horns - and incised horizontal frets further adorn the outfacing surfaces of the horns. The stone itself is quite attractive, probably a greenstone that also boasts rose, russet red, and cream hues. Size: 20.5" W x 14.25" H (52.1 cm x 36.2 cm)In addition to representing a ram, this piece was probably used as a firedog. There would have been two of these, and the ancients would have positioned one on either side of a fire pit that would have served as the legs to an elaborate ancient grill if you will. The ancients would have roasted meat resting on the back of the rams over a fire. The term Celtic-Iberian refers to a group of peoples who lived in the Pre-Roman era in northern and central Spain or in the region between the Iberian tribes of the Mediterranean coast on the Iberian peninsula and the Celtic tribes of the interior of the peninsula. Largely it refers incorrectly to the totality of all ancient Celtic and Iberian tribes on the Iberian peninsula. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Morris Pinto collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s Condition: Normal surface wear with scuffs and nicks as shown. Deposits on the surface as well. Old losses to rear end, nose, edges of curled horns, one section of the base (below front circular motif), peripheries and high-pointed areas as shown. Still the overall carving is impressive as are the incised elements. Rare and impressive. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 68b

Ancient Near East, Anatolia, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A fine gathering of two rare religious idol figures formed from copper. Each pair of figures stand atop an integral plinth, one bar-shaped and one circular, and both have a larger figure placing their left arm around the smaller figure next to them. The larger figure shows a slender male figure standing next to a shorter female figure, each with grooves incised across their shirts, and the male has his right arm held outward. The smaller pair of figures shows a very tall male figure standing next to a shorter male figure with one arm to his mouth, and the taller figure holds a small tool in his right hand. Each composition is covered in thick layers of citrine, green, and brown patina. Size: 1.75" W x 4.3" H (4.4 cm x 10.9 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.Bronze votive idols like these are known in a variety of fascinating forms throughout the pre-literate ancient world. From the truly abstract Kilia-type figures that are barely recognizable as human to the exaggerated feminine shapes of so-called "Venus" figures, people in the past, as today, had a clear desire to portray human forms and did not feel constrained by naturalism. There are some repeated motifs: outstretched arms, as on these figures, which researchers have interpreted to mean an act of supplication; similarly, the wide eyes on these figures are an often-repeated characteristic that researchers believe emphasizes that the figures depicted are attentive to the gods. Miniature figures like these seem to be portraying worshippers rather than gods, and we believe that they were small enough that, even though they were made of bronze, ordinary people could have owned them and kept them on home altars. Many people from the ancient Near East are found buried with items like these examples. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection Condition: Small nicks and abrasions to both sets of figures, with light softening to some finer details, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits as well as great patina throughout. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #146691

Lot 7

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. An incredibly striking and rare opaque sky blue glass bowl, probably made for holding condiments like salt or other spices at the table. From the outside, it presents a conical form, with shallow, sloping sides; the interior has thick, vertical sides roughly halfway down its length before abruptly changing to a conical form above its small, flat base. The bowl is mold made, its sides smooth. Age has given its interior a pretty pearlescence through which the original color of the glass shines. Size: 2.5" W x 1.7" H (6.4 cm x 4.3 cm) Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection Condition: Small depression to interior center probably from a bubble that popped during its creation. No pontil mark as it was mold made; a pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. #146058

Lot 75

Ancient Middle East, South Arabia, Qatabanian culture, ca. 3rd century BCE to 1st century CE. A striking pale yellow-white stone slab, a high-relief funerary stele, with a carved abstract human face presenting an inverted triangular profile, a slender nose between almond-shaped eyes, slender lips, and perky ears, all beneath a tall forehead. The tall, rectangular plaque has flat faces and peripheries, and a three-character name of "Aws," a popular name during this time, inscribed below the face. Lightly-drilled recesses denoting the pupils suggest the eyes were at one time adorned with bright colors, and faint traces of original orange-red pigment are still visible around the peripheries. Size: 7.5" W x 14.875" H (19 cm x 37.8 cm); 18" H (45.7 cm) on included custom stand. The deceased in this part of the world were often represented by anthropomorphic funerary stelae like this one; however, the face is highly stylized and it is doubtful that this is a portrait of a known individual. They have been found in three areas, one of which was the cemetery at Tamna, the capital city of Qataban. The Kingdom of Qataban rose to prominence in the second half of the 1st millennium BCE, because it controlled the trade in frankincense and myrrh, incenses required to be burned at altars during religious rituals further north and west. A haunting and rare artifact, certain to spark conversation, and a reminder of the deeper history of the Middle East. For a stylistically-similar example, please see The British Museum, museum number 1995,0124.1: https://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=271702&partId=1&searchText=arabian+ancient&page=1Another stylistically-similar example of a slightly-smaller size hammered for $11,875 at Christie's Special Exhibition Gallery Antiquities auction (sale 2490, December 7, 2011, lot 23): https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/ancient-art-antiquities/a-south-arabian-limestone-pillar-stela-for-5509059-details.aspx?from=searchresults&intObjectID=5509059&sid=e325e265-8cd6-48be-8023-2e89624dfaa4 Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Connecticut, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s; ex-private collection, acquired in the 1930s and 1940s Condition: Losses along edges and bottom as shown. Face is nicely preserved as are the letters at the base. Minor abrasions to obverse, peripheries, and reverse, with fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Lot 92

East Asia, China, Warring States Period to early Han Dynasty, ca. 475 BCE to 43 CE. A extremely rare example of a rock crystal ear cup (known as "erbei") of an ovoid form. The curved-bottomed cup has gently expanding walls which taper towards the top and create the thin rim from which a pair of semicircular "ear" handles project. The rock crystal is clear and translucent but has faint red/orange age deposits on its surface that give it a glass-like appearance. Cups like this example were heavily employed by the Chu peoples and were traditionally used for drinking wine, and the purpose of the handles was to provide stability so that none of the liquid was spilled. Size: 3.55" W x 0.95" H (9 cm x 2.4 cm)For a similar example, see Roger Chow, "Sparkling Splendours: The Art of Ancient Chinese Carvings on Rock Crystal and Agate, the Taoshi Zhai Collection", Hong Kong: The Art Museum, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2000, no. 220, pg. 209. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Joe Gerena collection, New York, USA, 1990s Condition: Intact, with some surface scratching commensurate with age. Light deposits on surface. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
