There are writs dating back to 1300 which identify serjeants as originating in France before the Norman Conquest. The order rose to prominence during the 16th century as a small, elite group of lawyers who undertook much of the work in the central common law courts and examples of 16th century serjeants' rings are held by the British Museum. The earliest record of a serjeant's ring dates to 1429. Larger quantities were produced in later years, particularly during the 18th century, but these later examples are today quite rare as they were often melted down by the owners. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
