Burnett (UK) tinplate clockwork General B Type Bus - very rare example of this 1920s opentop Vintage Double Deck Bus - red, grey, with detailed tinprinting, uniformed driver, steerable front wheels, with contemporary advertising e.g. Ideal Milk, Bovril, Colmans Mustard etc, with open staircase to rear and interior seating, detailed radiator grille, permanent key, the clockwork is in working order, light wear to some of the raised edges with very slight surface corrosion and to the wheel edges but still otherwise a Good Plus example, the first such model Vectis have had, 23cm long.

Lot 39

A rare Japanese bottle vase, mid 17th century, of pear form painted in underglaze blue with a crane and pine tree, others flying above, and two deer, chips, 30.7cm high This vase poses problems. The mouth is not what one would expect and it seems most likely that the original everted rim was damaged in the firing. To save what had been a considerable investment in potting and painting, they used part of a comparable piece and luted it on. It was then refired, the glaze forming a bond. Unusually, it was thrown in six sections. The painting is also exceptional in that it is almost entirely pencilled and without the use of washes. We can find no parallel in the literature.

* Graf Zeppelin. An extremely rare original passenger ticket (no. 5254), Hamburg-Amerika Linie, issued in the name of Ignaz Anton Tierne(?), for a round trip flight from Pernambuco, [Brazil], starting on 21 October 1931, printed in blue and black, with manuscript additions, creased where previously folded, split along centrefold with old sellotape stains, 31 x 19cm. Count Von Zeppelin, the inventor of the rigid airship, was almost 62 when his LZ1 first flew on 2 July 1900. When LZ127 appeared in 1928, the new liner of the air was called Graf Zeppelin in his memory. For almost a decade, this giant carried passengers and cargo, crossing the Atlantic many times and, in 1929 flew around the world at an average speed of 113 kph (70 mph). (1)

* National Air Races Cleveland Ohio. A rare original First Day Cover, flown from the event by the famous Aviatrix Ruth W. Stewart and autographed in green ink by the pilot, decorative colour lithograph designs frontis & verso with applied 5 cents postage stamp, franked dated September 4th 1931, minor tear to sealed flap, 4 x 9in (10 x 24cm). Ruth Stewart one of America’s finest women private-pilots tragically lost her life a year later on a routine flight, when her plane crashed in dense fog near Harrisburg PA in January 1932, flying in adverse conditions when persuaded against her instincts by fellow-aviators to make the trip against the clock. (1)

Rheims Aviation Meeting, 1909. A group of three rare “Verascope Richard” glass stereo slides showing pioneer aviators, early flying machines and spectators at this historic meeting, each image is captioned in English “Tissandier’s Wright machine”, “Mme. Delgrange”, “A group [of spectators]”, each 4 x 10cm. The “Grand Semaine de Champagne” was the first international aviation meeting in the world. It was a spectacular affair, financed by the cathedral city of Rheims and the neighbouring Vintners. The ten-square kilometre flying field boasted hangars, grandstands, barber shops, florists, and a sixty-seater terrace restaurant. (3)

* Midland Aero Club Members” car badge. A very rare early 20th c. silver plated and enamelled car badge, c. 1920s, having very decorative winged aero-engine motif with heavy relief propeller design, enamelled inscription to scroll below, pedestal mount upon an ebonised turned wood base (1)

* RAF, Royal Navy & Fleet Air-Arm Aircraft Serviceability Board. A rare warning sign for aircrew and air-mechanics etc., c. 1930s-1940s, flat metal “Duralloy”, twin-sided with hinged-over flaps to top variously inscribed, to indicate state of serviceability of aircraft under repair, used in conjunction with “Form 700” (“535” prior), painted olive drab with black panels for aircraft registration numbers etc, and brass hanging chain affixed to top, stores ref. 4A/44 21386/32. Initially used by the RAF and subsequently adopted by the Navy & Fleet-Air Arm, these boards were in regular use on aircraft carriers during WWII. The over-painted serial number on this panel indicates the last aircraft serviced using this board was K3516 Fairey Seal 1933, first assigned to No1 Flying Training School, thence to No2 A.A. Unit, finally to C-Flight at Lee on Solent, struck-off charge in 1940. Also indistinctly inscribed in pencil verso with names of flight-crew members including F/O Dennis, Cpl Harvey, A. Barnett, D. French and Mitchell. (1)

* RAF WWII. A rare large Pilot doll by Norah Wellings, created for the RAF Comforts Fund, c. 1940s, dressed in a one-piece “Sidcot”-pattern flying suit over RAF uniform, having pilot’s “Wings” brevet to left breast, cream felt with detail accessories of zip-fastened flying-boots, gauntlets, and flying-helmet etc., the ensemble complimented by a parachute-pack with harness, to back, with red, white & blue parachute intact, uniform tunic of mid-blue velvet with felt collar and brass buttons to front, with grey cotton shirt and black tie beneath, flying suit with faux-fur collar trim to helmet, pocket has applied blue felt flash, inscribed “Wrekin”, the collar having applied label inscribed “Royal Air Force Comforts Fund - regd. design no. 337533”, the lady-pilot has blond hair under helmet, with impressed & painted facial features on pink felt with blue eyes and red lipstick, shows minor tears and a little moth activity, minor discoloration to face and other surfaces from age and use, 30 ins (77cm). A Special Edition doll created to raise funds for the Royal Air Force Pilots” Charitable Organisation; which provided relief for POWs, or families of pilot’s who gave their lives in service during the Battle of Britain and the Air War 1939-45; with regard also to Women Pilots of the RAAF, and those delivering and ferrying fighters & bombers throughout the Second World War. (1)

* Roberts Aero Engine. A very rare early 20th c. pioneer aeroplane engine, Type 4X 50HP by Roberts Motors Ltd, Sandusky Ohio, USA c. 1910, four-cylinders in-line, water-cooled two-stroke motor, of lightweight aluminium and special alloys construction, having separate cast cylinders surmounting a crankcase jointed along the crankshaft centre-line, featuring exposed gear-train to rear for magneto-drive, water-pump and other ancillaries, having engraved maker’s plate to no.1 cylinder-barrel inscribed “Model 4X 50hp No 135” appears good condition and almost complete with all internals, fitted with Bosch Magneto type 4DU model 2, inlet manifold (lacking carburettor), and mounted upon a painted steel display frame. Roberts Motors Ltd founded by Edwin Roberts pioneered the use of lightweight aluminium and secret magnesium alloys of his own conception designated “Aerotite” and “Magnalium” in the construction of these engines of his own advanced design. Based on the lakeshore at Sandusky in Ohio, his engines were initially used in early float-planes and hydroplanes built by the nearby Curtiss Aeroplane Company for private and military purposes. Another constructor Thomas Benoist flew his own float-plane powered by this type of motor on an early record-flight from Omaha to New Orleans in 1912. Surviving examples of this type can be seen in the Smithsonian Institute and National Air & Space Museum, in the USA. (1)
