German Imperial. WW1 Kaiserliche Marine Ship’s Gimble Compass.A rare black painted brass example made by Steder of Kiel. The compass is numbered 1822. Housed in its stained pine box, the front and sliding lid with an Imperial Crown “M” and number 1825. Good clean condition. The vendor states the compass was acquired by a family member present at Scapa Flow 1918/1919.
WW1 Royal Flying Corps Cockpit Watch Circa 1914.A rare early war issue example signed to the silvered face “No. 114/A.F. W. Ehrhardt London Mark IVA 8 Days”. The nickel case with WD Issue stamp and fitted with long winding stem, with no provision for loop. PLEASE NOTE the watch is not in working condition and requires attention.
Victorian North Western Provinces and Ouch Police Officer’s Sword.A very good and rare example, the sword closely follows the 1821 light cavalry pattern. The slightly curved single edged blade, with etched decoration of a crowned “VII” cypher, the reverse with “NWT & OUCH” “1857-58 POLICE FORCE”. The forte with a Calcutta retailer’s details. The hilt with three bar open guard guard with shagreen grip the latter with twist wire binding. Housed in plated scabbard with two loose rings. The blade remains in very good, near parade condition. Slight age wear to the guard and wear to plating of scabbard.
Early 19th Century American “Eagle” Pommel Officer’s Blue and Gilt Sword.A good and rare example, the 30 inch single edged curved blade with half length blue & gilt decoration. This depicting a Stand of Arms and flora. The hilt is surmounted by a fine gilt eagle head, the pierced guard embossed with entwined snakes, entwining three flaming grenades. Housed in black leather and gilt mounted scabbard, this tailored with frog button and two loose rings. Grip slightly loose, Blue and Gilt approx. 85% present gilt bright.
Napoleonic War Period Cavalry Officer’s 1796 Light Cavalry Officer’s Sword.A good and rare example with gilt and blind etched decoration to the single edged 26 inch curved blade. The decoration depicts a crowned GR cypher, Royal Coat of Arms, Britannia and a figure of Victory. The hilt of the regulation pattern, with steel single bar guard, the grip retaining leather covering silver binding. Housed in steel scabbard with two loose rings. The blade in good clean clear condition. The hilt and scabbard with matching dark patina.
Early Victorian 1822 Infantry Pattern Levee Sword.A rare example with narrow single edged curved piped back blade. This with an etched panel with Crowned VR cypher and cutler’s details of “Bullmore Patrick & Co 17 Bedford St Covent Garden”. The hilt of the regulation pattern with fire gilt folding guard, with Crowned VR cypher and the shagreen grip retains wire binding. Housed in original black leather scabbard with fire gilt mounts, retaining frog button and loose rings. Overall clean condition, gilt fresh, crude repairs to scabbard. The cutler’s details would indicate circa 1837-1850
15th (Liverpool) Lancashire Rifle Volunteers 1878 Presentation Prize Sword.A rare prize sword, the blade etched with the presentation “J.W. DE SILVA 15TH LANCASHIRE R.V. DRILL PRIZE 1878”. The blade is also decorated with a “VR” crowned cypher and the device of the Lancashire Rifle Volunteers. The hilt is of the regulation Rifle Volunteer pattern with shagreen grip and twist wire binding. Housed in steel scabbard. Blade in clean condition. Overall GC. Raised at Liverpool 10th January 1860. Became 4th VB The King’s (Liverpool Regiment) in 1888.
Napoleonic War Period 45th Foot (Nottinghamshire) Grenadier Company Officer Fighting Mameluke Hilted Sword.A rare example by Prosser of London. The heavy 31 inch piped back blade with etched decoration of a crowned wreath with 45 to the centre. This is surmounted by a flaming grenade. Also decorated with a Stand of Arms. The forte with cutler’s details of Prosser to the Prince Regent. The hilt with steel crossguard decorated with a gilt flower head. This design can be seen securing the two piece grip. Housed in steel scabbard. Etching faint to parts of blade. Hilt slack

Housed in an early pattern brown leather scabbard with nickel rounded chape and strap with stud retainer. This scabbard has had its leather tangs removed during its working life. The overall condition is good clean bright, blade length 16.5cm

Officer’s Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840, clasp “Northumberland 22 May 1812” & Arctic Medal Pair.A rare combination awarded to Vice Admiral Francis Harding, who as a First Class Volunteer was present onboard HMS Northumberland during the action with the French frigates Ariane and Andromaque and would later serve as Lieutenant onboard the discovery ship HMS Gripper on the disastrous attempt to reach Repulse Bay 1824 Comprising: Naval General Service Medal, clasp “Northumberland 22 May 1812”, “F. HARDING VOLR”, Arctic Medal 1857 “LIEUT FRANCIS HARDING HMS GRIPPER” (privately impressed naming). First medal with edge bruising. Vice Admiral Francis Harding was born on the 28th April 1799, and entered the Royal Navy as a Volunteer on the 24th January 1812, under Captain Sir William Parker of the Amazon 38, a few weeks later he was removed to the Northumberland under the command of Captain Hon Henry Hotham. He is confirmed on the NGS Roll as serving onboard HMS Northumberland a 74 gun third rate, when she engaged two French frigates Ariane and Andromaque trying to slip through the British blockade of Isle de Groix. He would later see action with the Toulon Fleet and was present at the action resulting in the capture of a convoy of Porto Maurizio and the surrender of Genoa. Between 1814 and 1821 he served on the South American, Home and Newfoundland stations and passed his examination for Lieutenant in 1818. On the 7th April 1824 he was appointed to the discovery ship HMS Gripper, under Captain George Francis Lyon. She was refitted for Rear-Admiral Sir William Edward Parry’s third Northwest Passage expedition and was ordered to sail to Repulse Bay and from there cross the Rae Isthumus by sledge and to explore a stretch of water which lay to the west. She was also to support of HMS Hecla and HMS Fury. Gripper departed on 3 July 1824 and proceeded in company with the survey vessel Snap, the Gripper encountered gales and heavy ice when trying to make it’s way through the Roe’s Welcome and was so badly damaged she had to return to London and was paid off in December 1824. Francis Harding was now placed on the Half Pay list and it would not be until May 1827 when he was appointed Lieutenant of HMS Espoir 10 guns, which had be launched the previous year under the command of Captain Henry Francis Greville and sailed for the Cape of Good Hope. He was then appointed 1st Lieutenant of the surveying ship HMS Hecta and after an attack of the African Fever which killed her Captain Thomas Boteler and a large number of crew, he assumed command in November 1829. Returning home he was confirmed Captain in 1831 to the Jasper 18, in which he returned to the Cape. He would see service in South America as second Captain in the Flagship HMS Warspite of Sir Thomas Baker. In 1837 he was appointed Captain of Pelorus 16 and his services would see the thanks of the Governors of Western Australia and Van Dieman’s Land. He would also find himself serving as the Senior Naval Officer of the Australian Colonies. Due to ill health he once again found himself on the half pay list in 1841. He was promoted to the rank of Retired Rear-Admiral in 1862 and Retired Vice-Admiral in 1867. He died on the 22nd Janauary 1875 at Cheltenham. He is confirmed on the NGS Roll with the single clasp and also on the Arctic Medal Roll. There is no record found by Bosleys of these medals being previously on the open market.

The group is accompanied by a quantity of original ephemera including MID certificate 7th November 1917 “32nd Sig Coy RE”. ... 1944 MID Certificate Home Guard 20th June 1944. ... Company Quarter Master Sergeant Walter George Hoad enlisted into the Royal Engineers in 1910, he landed in France in October 1916 and was MID 14t December 1917. He remained with the BEF until January 1919. He was awarded the MSM. LG 18th January 1919. Transferring to the Royal Signals he served in Germany with the army of occupation from February 1919 until 1927, when he later that year was posted to India. He left the Army in 1933. His home town was given as Fareham and at the outbreak of WW2 volunteered for service with the HOME Guard.
WW2 SAS, Special Raiding Squadron, Commando Medal Group of Private Fred CaseyA rare medal group of seven awarded to an early member of the Special Air Service Private Fred Casey, who was awarded the C-in-C 21st Army Group certificate for outstanding good service whilst serving with the 1st SAS. He had formally served with the BEF 1940 with the Royal Sussex Regiment and later Commando units, before joining the SAS in August 1942.Comprising: 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Territorial Efficiency Medal (GVIR) “6399236 PTE F CASEY R. SUSSEX”. The medals are loose the campaign medals contained in original forwarding box addressed to Mr F Casey 30 Grenville Place Brighton Sussex” The box with date sent “18.11.49” and details to the back confirm sent by Infantry & AAC Records ... framed and glazed 21st Army Certificate “4979461 TPR CASEY F 1 SPECIAL AIR SERVICE REGIMENT” dated “2nd March 1945” ... Accompanied by an original portrait photograph of Fred wearing battledress uniform with SAS wings and medal ribbons. He also wears his SAS beret ... 1946 SAS pocket diary with various pencil inscriptions ... Photocopies, of service papers etc. Part of the Fred Casey SAS ArchivePrivate Fred Casey was a pre war territorial joining the 4th Bn Royal Sussex Regiment in October 1936, in the pre war years he attended the annual camps and at the outbreak of war 1939 was mobilised. He saw action in France with the BEF and was evacuated from France on the 30th May 1940. On home duties he volunteered for Commando training and on the 10th July 1940 was posted to F Troop 3 Commando, with a further posting in November to 4 Special Service Brigade. After training in February 1941 he found himself with 8 Commando and embarked with this unit to Egypt in April and served with the Middle East Commando. In August 1942 he was posted to the 1st Special Air Service. In March 1943 he was posted to the Special Raiding Squadron 1st SAS. The following month he was admitted to hospital and was discharged from the Raiding Support Squadron, possible for light duties. In December 1943 he was posted back to the UK and reported to 1st SAS on the 7th January 1944. As he prepared for the invasion of Europe he married and on the 18th August 1944 embarked to France. He was awarded the C-in-C certificate for gallantry January 1945. He served in Europe until May 1945 and was then posted with his unit to Norway. On the 20th March 1946 he was discharged to the Reserve.
WW2 1944 1st Special Air Service SAS attributed sand beret.A very rare example of the sand coloured beret made by British Beret Basque Ltd, also stamped with date 1944 and a WD Arrow. Retaining cloth embroidered SAS badge. The beret is constructed with leather sweatband, backing to the lining of the air vent holes and for a slider cap badge. Scots Fusilier Guards Grenadier Company 1830 Box Pattern Victorian Officer’s Epaulettes.A fine extremely rare pair of the pattern worn during the Crimean War. Massive gold embroidery to straps which bear a silver embroidered grenade and crown indicating Captain and Lieut. Colonel. Within the gilt metal crescents a large thistle in silver embroidery. Gold boxed bullions and small gilt mounted regimental buttons to straps. Crimson silk and leather lining with lace fastenings. Minor service wear. VGC ... Housed in shaped red cardboard storage box Such epaulettes, familiar from Crimean War scenes, were abolished in 1855.

Boer War 1st Norfolk Volunteer Service Company Town of Thetford Tribute Silver Cigarette Case.A rare example presented to Private George William Ashford who served in South Africa with the 1st Norfolk Volunteer Service Company. The case bears Chester Silver Hallmarks for 1900 and is engraved to the front with the crest of Thetford and “PRO PATRIA NORFOLK VOLUNTEERS SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1901”. The reverse engraved “PTE G.W. ASHFORD PRESENTED BY THE MAYOR AND BURGESSES BOROUGH OF THETFORD MAY 31ST 1901”. VGC. Private George William Ashford a native of Thetford was serving with the 4th VB Norfolk Regiment when he volunteered for service in South Africa January 1900. He landed in South Africa in February 1900 and remained there for one year.
19th Century Christ’s Hospital City of London Governor’s Wand of Office.An extremely rare example. The wand is a length of 71 inches, painted full length with a dark green ground colour. The upper section decorated with the Arms of the City of London and initial “C.H.”. Slight wear, GC colours remain bright. DARWIN WALKING STICK, mid-19th century, a rare folk art carved hedgerow wood walking stick, carved with the head of a man and the head of an ape back to back, presumably inspired by Charles Darwin’s book 'On the Origin of Species', 90cm high Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. His proposition that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors is now widely accepted, and considered a foundational concept in science. Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book 'On the Origin of Species'. By the 1870s, the scientific community and a majority of the educated public had accepted evolution as a fact.
