Thomson (Joseph). To the Central African Lakes and Back, the Narrative of the Royal Geographical Society's East Central African Expedition 1878-80, 2 vols., Sampson Low, 1881, mounted photographic port. frontis. and folding map at rear of each, contemp. half calf with gilt dec. spines and morocco labels, 8vo. Rare. The expedition was sent by the Royal Geographical Society under its African Exploration Fund scheme and was originally led by the cartographer Keith Johnston. Johnston died at an early stage of the journey allowing Thomson to take over as commander of the expedition. (2)

* Japan - Nagasaki. An album of twenty albumen prints [by Felice Beato], c. 1864, including town views, street scenes, temples and boats with figures, birds-eye views of the town, boats on estuary mud, a tea house on a bridge on Tocaido Road, plus an extra albumen print of a large group of Europeans posing on rough ground, all images approx. 21 x 28 cm, most with English pencil captions beneath, some fading throughout, mounts badly dampstained with some purple colour on the majority of images, contemp. traditional style Japanese album with pictorial wooden boards, backstrip deficient, and covers det., oblong folio. Felice Beato arrived in Japan in 1862/3 and lived in Yokohama from 1863 until 1884. He visited Nagasaki in 1864 and took some of the earliest known photographs in this region. Three of the rare photographs in this album are also in the collection of Japanese old photographs in Bakumatsu-Meiji Period at Nagasaki University. These are a photograph of the Bell Tower within the Daionji Temple compounds in Teramaschi (no. 1286); the tea house on the Tocaido Road, upstream on Nakashima River, the oldest known photograph of this bridge (no. 1289); and a general view of Nagasaki from Battery Hill from around the cemetery of Donnoyama in Koshima (no. 1292). * Buckinghamshire - Oakley. Rare medieval deed, undated but probably late 13th c. , by which William son of William son of Elye [Fitz Elys] of Waterperry, Oxon. conveys to his nephew Geoffrey St. Martin, for his life, pasturage for nine oxen in Acle [Oakley] next to Brill, the names of seven witnesses are written at the end, being a clearly written parchment title deed in excellent condition with bifurcation to several letters, having a seal tag but no seal. Deeds were not normally dated before about 1290. (1)

Rare early Lease for Lives, dated 29 September 1309 , by which William son of Robert Tulus of Thomley [Oxon.] leases to Nicholas le Rutur of Oakley and Christian his wife for their lives, two acres and one rod of arable land in Acclee [Oakley], the property is described in detail with field-names given, names of neighbouring landowners (such as Nigel Travers) and seven witnesses are also given, being an indented parchment title deed in good condition, with a seal tag and linen cover but seal missing (1)

* Buckinghamshire - Oakley and Worminghall. Interesting Medieval Deed of Gift, dated Christmas 1439 , by which Joan, widow of John FitzElys, conveys to her son Robert FitzElys, the Manor of Wormenhale [Worminghall] and Ocle [Oakley] which she holds for her life, reserving certain rooms (including "le parlor") in The Hall for her own use, being an indented parchment title deed, a little affected by damp and having a small hole, the seal and tag are missing. It is very rare to find documentary evidence of specific rooms detailed in deeds from such an early date. (1)

Exceptional and rare Deed of Gift, undated but probably c.1160 , by which Ale [?Alice] daughter of Agnes de Podio conveys to Helyas [Ellis] son of William, three virgates of land in "Tackleia", one virgate held by Gerard de Fonte, with the names of ten witnesses including Roger St. John, Hugh Paupere, Symon de Cuba, Humphrey and Robert de Bosco and endorsed "Carta Tackley" being a small parchment title deed in excellent condition, very clearly written, having a seal tag but no seal. The English Place Name Society's The Place-Names of Buckinghamshire has no early form of Oakley spelled with a T, but it is often spelled "Acle" or "Acclee". See Fitz Elys documents for Buckinghamshire - Oakley above. (1)

Waller (Pickford, 1873-1927). Sketchbook containing numerous original designs and motifs carefully executed in coloured inks, 1912, 32pp., with Waller's monogram and date to front pastedown, orig. cloth, rear cover dampstained, oblong 8vo. Waller was a well-respected connoisseur and designer of book-plates, book-covers and stationery but is probably best known for his association with James Guthrie at the Pear Tree Press. This little sketchbook contains numerous art-nouveau/art deco designs, some clearly intended to be for book-plates, plus one illustration captioned 'rare shell fish caught at Boscombe, full size, Nov. 1912'. Foliate engraved rounded frame, ring trigger cocks and revolves hammer, front trigger fires charge. Two piece bag shaped wooden grips. GWO & C (frame lightly pitted). Colt A fine and rare London retailed .45 Boxer single action army revolver no. 43707 5.50-inch barrel with impressed address Colt's Pt Mfg Co HartfordCT USA. Depot 14 Pall Mall London, (the first part feintly stamped), ejector rod with round head, the black powder frame with 3 line patent dates Pat Sept 19. 1871, " July 2-72, " Jan 19-75, and retaining almost all of its original case hardened finish, loading gate, varnished one piece walnut grip, the blued trigger guard marked 45 CAL B, London Black Powder proof, contained in its original oak case with makers label to the lid, including its original stripping tool, cleaning rod, key and oil bottle, and space for 28 rounds of ammunition. The revolver was built in 1878, appears virtually unused and retains almost all of its original finish. (The bright blue to the barrel and cylinder with minor wear and dull patches). The bore is crisp and bright. Only 729 examples in this calibre were built for the English market, of which as few as 182 are thought to carry the Pall Mall address. For further information see The Colt Peacemaker, British Model by Keith Cochran, 1989.The vendor states that the pistol has been in his family, certainly since the First World War, and possibly from new. It has not been fired for many years.

Thomas Horsley A rare 12-bore self-opening bar in wood sidelock non-ejector gun, no. 2906 30-inch Damascus barrels with 2.50-inch chambers, dolls head extension, the distinctive frame, locks and pull back top-lever with scroll engraving, the makers name signed within a scrolling banner, 14-inch figured stock, proof exemption certificate, worn overall, stock cracked and with pieces missing below each lock 6lb. 14oz. A similar gun is mentioned and illustrated in Vol 2 of The British Shotgun by Crudgington & Baker, page 106. The gun incorperates T. Horsley and C. Pryse patent 3874 of 1883 however with the improvement of rollers to the spring compressors.
