BLOCKER DAN: (1928-1972) American Actor, remembered for his role in the television series Bonanza. Rare vintage signed 6 x 8 photograph of Blocker in a head and shoulders pose wearing a Western costume. Signed in turquoise blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area of the background. Autographs of Blocker are rare as a result of his untimely death at the age of 43. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink across a light area of the background, 'To Raoul, with love from Marion'. Authentic signed photographs of Davies are rare as the majority were signed by secretaries. Some slight traces of former mounting to the corners of the white borders, otherwise VG.

VISCONTI LUCHINO: (1906-1976) Italian Film Director. A.L.S., Luchino, four pages, 4to, Rome, 6th August 1966, to Wendy [Hanson]. Visconti states that he was sorry to learn that his correspondent had been in London on the only day he was there too ('And now you say that you was at S. Lorenzo at the same table!! This is really a shit!') and explains 'I was in London for one day to contact Julie Christie for a film. I arrived in the afternoon, in the same evening I went to the Covent Garden for the Magic Flute and then for super (sic) at S. Lorenzo'. The director continues with a sentence in Italian referring to the love in his correspondent's life and adding 'Because I know that your life is very influenced by your love-life. How is going on? What you decide to do? Really you will not consider the possibility to come and work in Italy? You will imagine that I am very insistent but really I would like to know what is in your mind. Please answer to me and tell me.' In a postscript he adds that Gian Carlo Menotti's production of Pelleas and Melisande was very, very good. Rare. ZIEGFELD FLORENZ: (1867-1932) American Broadway Impresario, noted for his theatrical revue the Ziegfeld Follies. Rare T.L.S., F Ziegfeld, one page, 4to, New York, 27th March 1931, to Mr. W. Milton Sisson, on the printed stationery of the Ziegfeld Theatre ('A Playhouse Like No other in America'). Ziegfeld returns some photographs (no longer present) which he had been sent to judge, explaining 'I have numbered my selections from one to six on the backs of the pictures'. He further remarks 'Please understand that I have chosen what I consider the best looking “pictures” of the young ladies, as it is a very hard matter to be certain from a photograph as to just exactly what a girl is like…' Some minor, small circular staining to each corner, caused by previous mounting to the verso, not affecting the text or signature, about VG

COOKE SAM: (1931-1964) African-American Singer, known as the King of Soul. Rare, bold fountain pen ink signature ('Sam Cooke') on an oblong 12mo piece clipped from a cheque. Cooke's signature appears beneath four lines of printed text in the form of an endorsement on a cheque made payable to Cooke and issued by the Irving Trust Company in New York. Autographs of Cooke are rare in any form following his tragic and controversial death from a gunshot wound at the age of 33. VG

Signed by Prince, 'Love God, Prince', in bold blue ink to a clear area of the image and dated 1988 in his hand. A note to the verso in the hand of a collector indicates that the signature was obtained in person in Los Angeles on 26th May 1988 (shortly before his Lovesexy tour). DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A very fine, large D.S., Charles Dickens, one page (vellum), large oblong folio (26.5 x 22), London, 21st March 1863. The attractively penned manuscript document is an Indenture made between Dickens ('of Higham, in the County of Kent') and John Brooker, a farmer, also of Kent, relating to 'a piece or parcel of land or garden ground containing by estimation eight acres and sixteen perches or thereabouts as now stumped off formerly woodland part of a piece of land formerly called or known by the name of “Seeming Ruff” but now called “Scrubby Bushes” situate lying and being at or near a certain place called Gads Hill in the Parish of Higham in the County of Kent…' Signed by Dickens in bold blue fountain pen ink to the foot either side of a red wax seal affixed to a small green ribbon. With an affixed blue revenue stamp in the lefty margin. Rare in this form. Some very light age wear at the folds, nevertheless an unusually clean and handsome document. VG Gads Hill Place in Higham was the beloved country home of Charles Dickens. The novelist first encountered the mansion in 1821 when he was nine years old and would often walk from Chatham to Gads Hill Place as he wished to see it again and again as an image of his possible future. Dickens was later to write, 'I used to look at it as a wonderful Mansion (which God knows it is not) when I was a very odd little child with the first faint shadows of all my books in my head - I suppose.' Thirty-five years later, Dickens, now famous and of wealth, discovered that the house was for sale and purchased it for £1790 in March 1856. Initially Dickens bought the house as an investment, intending to let it, but changed his mind and used it instead as a country retreat, moving into the house in June 1857.

Also signed by Franz Wasner (1905-1992, Director & Conductor of the Trapp Family Singers). All have signed with their names alone in bold fountain pen inks. An inscription appears in another hand at the head of the page. With an ownership signature to the half title page. Rare. Lacking the dust jacket. Some extremely minor, light age wear, VG Maria von Trapp's memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers inspired the musical The Sound of Music.

BURGESS GUY: (1911-1963) British Intelligence Officer, a member of the Cambridge Five spy ring that passed secrets to the Soviets before and during the Cold War. Book signed, a hardback edition of Thomas J. Wise in The Original Cloth - The Life and Record of the Forger of the Nineteenth Century Pamphlets by Wilfred Partington, First Edition published by Robert Hale Limited, London, 1946. Bearing the ownership signature ('Guy Burgess') of Burgess in dark fountain pen ink to the front free endpaper, dated 1948 in his hand. Also featuring the ownership bookplate of Kim Philby to the pastedown. Philby's small oblong 12mo bookplate bears his printed name H. A. R. Philby within a decorative border. Rare and a book with interesting associations originating from the libraries of two members of the Cambridge Five. Lacking the dust jacket. Some age wear and staining to the boards, otherwise VG H. A. R. 'Kim' Philby (1912-1988) British Intelligence Officer, a Double Agent and member of the spy ring known as the Cambridge Five. Philby defected to the Soviet Union in 1963.

EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. Rare D.S., Edward R I, as King, at the head, two pages, folio, Court at Saint James's, 15th June 1936. The typed document is addressed to Cosmo Gordon Lang, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, and is a mandate for the Consecration of the Reverend James Lawrence Cecil Horstead to be a Bishop, 'to the intent that he should exercise his functions in one of Our Possessions and also in one of Our Protectorates abroad'. With blind embossed paper seal affixed at the head along with the original black ribbon. A portion of the second page to the integral leaf has been neatly cut away, evidently for the removal of the countersignature. Some very minor, extremely light staining to the left edge, about VG William Cosmo Gordon Lang (1864-1945) Scottish Anglican Prelate who served as Archbishop of York (1908-28) and Archbishop of Canterbury (1928-42). The Most Rev. James Horstead (1898-1989) Anglican Bishop of Sierra Leone (1936-61) and Archbishop of West Africa (1955-61).

A fine, rare vintage signed 6 x 9 cabinet photograph, the image depicting the King standing in a formal three quarter length pose wearing his uniform. Signed ('Pierre') in bold, dark fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background and dated Belgrade, 14th January 1913 in his hand. Matted in cream and framed and glazed in the original brown leather and gilt frame to an overall size of 11 x 14. Together with a letter of transmittal from a Secretary of the Cabinet of the King, dated 15th January 1913, accompanied by the original Registered envelope addressed to Achille Joinard, and also including a second, slightly larger Registered envelope also addressed to Joinard and dated 16th January 1913. MACROBERTSON AIR RACE: Individual clipped signed pieces by Tom Campbell Black (1899-1936) English Pioneer Aviator and Charles W. A. Scott (1903-1946) English Pioneer Aviator who, together, won the London to Melbourne Centenary Air Race in 1934. Both signatures are in bold, dark fountain pen ink. Autographs of Campbell Black are rare following his tragically early death in an aviation accident. Scott's piece is slightly irregularly clipped, very close to the signature. Neatly laid down alongside each other to a 4to sheet bearing a printed biography of Campbell Black. Together with an A.L.S., Charles W. A. Scott, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., March 1937, to Marjorie Scott. The aviator writes, in full, 'We used to think of yours as being the weaker sex Marjorie. But now with Amelia Earhart, & Jean Batten & Amy (Johnson) this seems hardly to be the case'. An interesting statement for its references to various aviatrix. Also including book signed, a hardback edition of Scott's Book - The Life and Mildenhall-Melbourne Flight of C.W.A. Scott, published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd., London, December 1934 (reprinted). Signed by Scott with his name alone in bold fountain pen ink to the front free endpaper. Cloth boards and no dust jacket. Frontispiece illustration detached. Some light age wear and minor staining and discoloration to cloth. Further including a bold, dark fountain pen ink signature ('Charles W. A. Scott') on a piece. The lot also features [Bert Hinkler] (1892-1933) Australian Pioneer Aviator, the first pilot to fly solo from England to Australia (1928) and the first to fly solo across the Southern Atlantic Ocean (1931). An original small 4to printed menu for a dinner in honour of Hinkler, given by Sir Charles Wakefield at the Savoy Hotel, 28th November 1928. The attractive printed menu features an illustration of Hinkler by artist Fred Roe to the cover, a printed narrative of Hinkler's record flight from London to Australia and three photographs, as well as map of the route, to the inside. Vintage signed and inscribed sepia 11.5 x 15.5 photograph, the image depicting Goebbels in a profile head and shoulders pose. Signed ('Dr. Goebbels') in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image, with a three line inscription in German, the Nazi salute ('Heil Hitler') and date, 18th October 1935, in his hand. Partially written across a darker area of the image although legible. Signed photographs of Goebbels of this size and quality are extremely rare. VG

NUREMBURG TRIALS: A rare 'Short Snorter' United States of America One Dollar banknote individually signed by seven of the defendants at the Nuremberg Trials comprising Hermann Goering (1893-1946, Reichsmarschall and Commander of the Luftwaffe 1935-45), Wilhelm Keitel (1882-1946, German Field Marshal, head of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht), Alfred Jodl (1890-1946, Wehrmacht Generaloberst, deputy to Keitel), Wilhelm Frick (1877-1946, Reich Minister of the Interior 1933-43), Fritz Sauckel (1894-1946, Gauleiter of Thuringia 1927-45), Konstantin von Neurath (1873-1956, Reich Minister of Foreign Affairs 1932-38) and Joachim von Ribbentrop (1893-1946, Reich Minister of Foreign Affairs 1938-45). All have signed their names in fountain pen inks, some adding the date in their hands. A couple of the signatures are very weak and barely legible. Some small ink annotations in the hand of the collector. Some light overall creasing and age wear, G Provenance: Accompanied by a typed certificate signed by Dan J. Hardy, a Notary Public of West Virginia, stating, in part, 'that the signatures listed below and appearing on the 1935A Silver Certificate, Serial No. Y 59385846 C, are authentic and were obtained by me while I was a guard in the courtroom of the War Criminal Trials, Palace of Justice, Nuremberg, Germany. Orders came down to collect signatures no more, and this prevented me from getting all of them. The signatures were obtained in the cell block before we took the prisoners to the courtroom each morning'. Countersigned by Louise Lowther, Notary Public of Harrison County, West Virginia, and bearing her blind embossed stamp. Also included is a holograph copy of the same statement signed by Dan Hardy alongside his blind embossed Notary Public stamp and dated 20th April 1966. Some overall creasing, light staining, age wear and small areas of paper loss to the statement.

A rare and important pair of late 16th / early 17th century brass trumpet based candlesticks, the removable candle sconces above twisted stems, the mid-drip pan with milled edge above the trumpet bases, 40cm high, 32cm diameter. Provenance: previously of Newton Surmaville House, Somerset. Sold at Duke's Auctioneers on Thursday 30th July 2009, lot 569.

Trajan Hughes (British, b. 1670): oil on canvas depicting a farmyard scene with cockerel, three white speckled hens and their five chicks pecking at corn, a farm building, fence and trees to the background, and a flock of birds flying in the distance against the dawn sky, signed 'Trajan Hughes' lower centre, 82 by 102cm (32.2 by 40.2 inches). PROVENANCE: Purchased by the vendor's father, circa 1970, from an art gallery in Chester, the gallery reputedly had purchased the painting from an auction in Wales some time before. NOTES: Born in Wales, Trajan Hughes is one of the earliest recorded animal painters in Britain and his works are extremely rare. He was a contemporary of Francis Barlow, who drew and painted similar subjects. Hughes' small oeuvre of bird paintings display a delightful simplicity with close attention to detail in the plumage and the features of the birds. His palette is reminiscent of Dutch and Flemish old masters but painted with a directness and charm rooted in British painting of the period.

Circle of Mutisya Munge early-mid 20th century, a very rare and collectible Kamba carved wood figure of a nursing mother carrying a child on her back, holding a long necked milk gourd on her lap and also with the leather covered milk bottle typical of the Kamba peoples. A closely related figure with similar metal earrings and inset eyes was recently acquired by the British Museum: item number 2011 2027 1.

Rouen, Trenchard-Behout, 1821, placard in-plano illustré sur son quart supérieur d’une grande gravure sur bois représentant le Juif Errant et divers épisodes de sa vie, les personnages en costumes du XVIIIe siècle (remploi d’un bois plus ancien que le calendrier). {CR}Feuille marouflée sur toile, non montée sur châssis, bords effrangés avec encadrement de filets gravés sur bois (encadrement parfois atteint). JOLY Maurice, Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu ou la politique de Machiavel au XIXe siècle par un contemporain. Bruxelles, chez tous les libraires, 1868, un vol. in-12, rel. ép. demi-chagrin, dos à cinq nerfs, tranche sup. dorée (coins usés, sinon bon ex.). Seconde édition, aussi rare que la première et donnant le nom de l’auteur, de ce pamphlet contre Napoléon III, qui doit sa célébrité à l’utilisation qu’en fit la police tsariste, en plagiant son texte pour en faire un brûlot antisémite et en le diffusant sous un nouveau titre : « les protocoles des sages de Sion » (plagiat démasqué par les travaux de Normann Cohn). Un f. après le titre rappelle la condamnation par les tribunaux, en 1865, de la première édition.

Rare et émouvant document sur le séjour et la maladie de Louis XV à Metz en 1744, maladie pendant laquelle il aurait été soigné par un médecin juif.{CR}Belle condition.

FONTAINE DE SYNAGOGUE en cuivre repoussé, dénommée Guissef en judéo-alsacien. Elle est en trois parties dont deux à inscriptions hébraïques probablement appariées tardivement, la partie haute et le couvercle pouvant être de la fin du XIXe siècle. La partie basse servant à recueillir l’eau porte deux mains de Cohanim et mention en hébreu de l’année 1819. Aussi bien l’inscription que la gravure des mains sont de très belle venue. La partie haute porte la bénédiction des mains ainsi qu’un décor classique de lions affrontés autour des Tables de la Loi. Manque la robinetterie.{CR}Vallée du Rhin, XIXe siècle.{CR}Hauteur de la partie haute et du couvercle : 55 cm ; hauteur de la partie basse : 31 cm{CR}En l’état. {CR} Très bel et rare exemplaire d’une fontaine portant le symbole des mains de prêtre et les inscriptions hébraïques qui attestent son usage dans une synagogue pour les ablutions des Cohanims (prêtres) avant la bénédiction sacerdotale.
