Middleton (Capt. Christopher T.) To the King This Chart of Hudson`s Bay & Straits Baffin`s Bay Strait Davis & Labrador Coast &c. is most humbly Dedicated.... rare separately published detailed chart with north oriented to the right with inset descriptive text cartouches centre left and lower right armorial title cartouche upper centre engraved chart by Richard Seale 485 x 665mm. trimmed on or just within the left outer borderline small areas of loss with rudimentary repairs affecting lower right and bottom borders occasionally just into the chart the sheet lined with japan tissue faint old folds 1743. *** Christopher Middleton (d.1770) was previously employed as a captain by the Hudson Bay Company whose charter included the quest to find a north-west passage to the Pacific before being commissioned by the Irish MP Arthur Dobbs to undertake such a voyage to prove his conviction that the Company had deliberately neglected to do so in order to protect its fur trade. The voyage in 1841-42 explored the extremities of Hudson Bay to no avail but Middleton made many new discoveries and observations all carefully documented in this chart which he issued the following year. Dobbs later made concerted attempts to discredit him prompting Middleton to write a book in his defence. But curiously he did not include this chart leaving it as an extreme cartographic rarity. For instance apart from the Streeter copy acquired from Henry Stevens in 1963 sold in 1969 and again at Sotheby`s in 2004 only 3 copies are known in US institutions at the universities of Illinois Michegan and Minnesota but none in the Library of Congress Yale or New York Public Library.
