Exquisite first edition thus of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a book of poems translated from Persian to English by Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883), an English poet and writer best known for his translation of this book. The poems were attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet from ancient Persia. The book was published by Hodder and Stoughton Circa 1910 and bound by Sangorski and sutcliffe, one of the foremost bookbinders on England in the early 1900's. The book was illustrated by Edmund Dulac, a French artist influenced by William Morris and Aubrey Beadsley and who used Oriental and Persian motifs in his works. The book is done in Morocco leather, it has 189 pages with all edges gilt, a gilt-decorated cover, five raised bands with six gilt panels on the spine, and 12 beautiful color plates by Dulac. The book is inscribed "Phoebe S. Harvey 1928" in the front; she was probably the original owner of the book. The book comes with two red ribbon markers and its original slipcase. You can tell because the pattern on the slipcase matches the pattern on the front and rear end papers of the book. Sangorski and Sutcliffe were known for using jeweled bindings which had real gold and precious stones on the covers. In fact, they were commissioned to create a lavish copy of the Rubaiyat which was adorned by golden peacocks with jeweled tails and encircled by elaborate gilded vines; the book was sent on the titanic, and when the titanic sank, the book went down with it. A second copy of the Rubaiyat was bound at the beginning of World War II and placed in a bank vault for safe keeping, but enemy bombing destroyed the vault and that copy. Later, Stanley Bray made a third version of the binding based on the original design, this copy is now in the British Library. Finally, a copy had been saved. The book measures 7 3/4 x 6 1/16 x 1 1/4 in. The slip case is slightly larger. The book is rare and it is very hard to find a copy of the book with a slip case. Very light rubbing at the tail of the spine and the tips of the slip case.
Amaso Delano, A Narrative of Voyages and Travels in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, Comprising Three Voyages Round the World, Together with a Voyage of Survey and Discovery, in the Pacific Ocean and Oriental Islands, Second Edition 1818, Printed by E G House for the Author; gilt decorations on the spine and covers, with two engraved portraits and one fold-out map, the first portrait shows Captain Delano, an American sea captain from Duxbury, Massachusetts and author of the book, the second depicts Abba Thulle, King of the Pelew Island, in 1791, with descriptive accounts of some of the voyages Delano’s ship took to various parts of the Pacific, including Hawaii, Palau, the Galapagos Islands, and Australia; his travelogue describes the different cultures he encountered and provides a unique account of the Bounty and Captain Bligh, including an early map of Pitcairn Island, and this may have been the basis for the film “The Mutiny on the Bounty”. A rare book, but a front free endpaper is missing, parts of the map are missing, there is foxing, and the bottom tips have wear. Very desirable. Several modern reprints have been found, but only two original copies on the rare book website we use at the auction house. The book measures 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. wide.

This bronze Italian Bravery Medal (Al VALORE MILITARE) features the inscription: "ORO ALLA PATRIA" and is surrounded by a laurel wreath. The reverse is engraved: "PINTUD /GIUSEPPE " and "MONTE ZEBIO / 10 GIUGNO 1917". The original ribbon features a silver embroidered star and a bronze clasp with the dedication: "18 NOVEMBRE 1935 a XIV". The 1935 fundraising campaign for the Italian Nation sparked a wave of patriotism, which resulted in numerous living recipients of the highest Italian bravery award, the gold medal Al VALORE MILITARE, as well as family members of former recipients donating their gold medals. They received an official replacement decoration in the form of this special type bronze medal. These medals are an important testimony to the sacrifice and love of country of these Italian Patriots and represent a medal of perhaps greater value than the original gold medals. As a WW I. replacement medal especially interesting and an extremely rare example of the highest Italian bravery award.

Der Ruhmesorden (russisch Орден Славы) wurde am 8. November 1943 vom Präsidium des Obersten Sowjet der Sowjetunion gestiftet. Der Orden hat drei Klassen und wurde nur an Soldaten bis zum Rang des Unteroffiziers verliehen. Die Verleihpraxis war, dass ein Soldat zuerst mit der rangniedrigsten dritten Klasse ausgezeichnet wurde, dann der zweiten und zum Schluss der höchsten, der ersten Klasse. Träger aller Klassen wurden "Ritter des Ruhmes-Ordens", was zu den gleichen Privilegien wie ein "Held der Sowjetunion" berechtigte. Das Band dieser Medaille ist das Sankt-Georgs-Band. Im 2. DIVISION BRANDENBURG - Grouping from the Estate of Major Max Wandrey, Kommander of the 2nd Bataillon, Jäger-Regiment 1, Panzergrenadier Division "Brandenburg". The 787th recipient of the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Wandrey was one of the bravest officers in the well known special forces of the Abwehr: the Brandenburgers, which was expanded into a Panzergrenadier Division in the last years of the war. His actions elevated him into the ranks of one of the most successful combat commanders, which was evidenced by his many military decorations for valor. Already awarded the German Cross in gold in 1942, Wandrey received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his valor in combat as the commander of the 11th company on 9 January 1944 in Greece and as commander of the 2nd Battalion on 16 March 1945 posthumously the oak leaves. Wandrey died on 21. 2. 1945 after a serious wound in a hospital in Kruschwitz/Saxony. Die Truppenfahnen der Luftwaffe lehnen sich im Gegensatz zu den Heeresfahnen an die althergebrachte Gestaltung der preußischen Regimentsfahnen an und gehen in dieser Tradition auf die Fahnen der Armee Friedrich des Großen zurück. Sicherlich ist gerade die gelbe Fahne der Fliegertruppe als eine der prächtigsten Feldzeichen des 3. Reiches zu betrachten. Bis auf wenige unwesentliche leichte Flecken und Altersspuren ein sehr schönes Exemplar in guter Erhaltung. Sehr seltenes Originalexemplar. Each edge features a silk white border with silver bullion aluminum fringe. The obverse features a bullion Luftwaffe eagle surrounded by a silver aluminum bullion oak leaf wreath with radiating black and white silk rays. Each ray has an embroidered black swastika. The reverse field features the silver embroidered inscription: "fliegerhorst kommandantur Stade" (Military Airfield Command, Stade). The upper edge features a leather attachment strap with silver plated rod and aluminium hanging device.Very attractive, untouched Jingling Johnny banner. In contrast to the Army flags, the Luftwaffe's branch flags base their design on the traditional pattern of the Prussian regimental flags and harken back to the Army of Frederick the Great.Without question, the yellow branch flag of the Luftwaffe is one of the most attractive designs of the Third Reich. Die Verleihungsbestimmungen: "Bei den Deutschen Jugendmeisterschaften in allen von der Hitlerjugend betriebenen Sportarten, die im Rahmen der alljährlich stattfindenden Winter-, Hallen-, Sommer- und Wasserkampfspiele durchgeführt werden, werden die in den betreffenden Sportarten jeweils ersten Sieger, bzw. Siegerinnen mit der goldenen Nadel des Deutschen Jugendmeisters ausgezeichnet. Diese Auszeichnung kann in jedem Jahr in jeder Sportart nur ein Hitlerjunge, bzw. BDM-Mädel oder in den Mannschaftssportarten nur die Angehörigen der besten Mannschaft erringen. Die zweiten und dritten Sieger der Deutschen Jugendmeisterschaften erhalten die gleiche Nadel in Silber, bzw. Bronze. The award criteria was as follows: "At the German Youth Championships in all sports run by the Hitler Youth, which are conducted within the framework of the annual Winter, Inside Hall, Summer and Water games, the first winners in each of the sports concerned are awarded with the golden pin of the German youth champion. This award may be presented each year in every sport to a member of the Hitler youth or BDM-girl, or in the team sports, only to the members of the best team. The second and third winners of the German Youth Championships receive the same pin in silver and bronze. The pins carry the inscription "Kampfspiele" because the title of a youth champion in each sport can only be awarded once a year." Amberg Model 71 Rifle.All matching, except for firing pin screw, Rifle Factory Amberg Model 71/84 11.5 x 60mm production specimen features almost 75% of the original factory finish with bore showing light wear to grooves. Breech shows signs of being reblued in some areas. The factory issue brass trigger guard was replaced during WWI with a cast iron, blackened version. (due to shortages in raw materials, the brass trigger guards on some rifles were replaced with cast iron versions) . Rifle is marked "AMBERG" to top of barrel between the sight and breech; also marked to right side "1875". Left side of barrel is marked with serial number, acceptance stamp and crown along with "M" for Bavaria. Left side of breech is marked with serial number and model designation "I.G. Mod. 71". Rifle also shows all associated acceptance stamps and proof marks to the stock (shows depressions and staining) including Bavarian crown. An extremely rare version of this Model 71 rifle. Left side of receiver features the serial number "6480", the right side features the original proof mark in the form of a stylized eagle and four military acceptance stamps in the form of a stylized eagle over six with the last two positioned one above the other. Toggle features the maker mark SIMSON & co. SUHL on the central joint as well as the military acceptance stamp to the front toggle and the last two digits of the serial number on the three articulating parts. The center and the rear locking joint feature the military acceptance stamp, a stylized eagle over six. The front grip strap features the complete serial number 6480 and the trigger guard is marked with military acceptance eagle over 6 along with the unit markings "Tr.St. A. S. 488".
