Lot 19

Fine Royal wine glass from H.M.Queen Victoria's glass table service with finely cut crowned VR cipher inscribed on paper label on base 'Used by The Shah at the State Opera July 2/89'. 11.5cm. H.I.M. Naser al-Din Shah Qajar Shah of Persia (1831-1896) came for a State Visit to England in July 1889 and had already been invested by Queen Victoria a Knight of The Garter on his previous visit in 1873. He is reported to have had 84 wives and many concubines. The state visit was well reported at the time and included a State Opera performance where presumably the Shah had personally used this glass to drink from. A very rare memento from his visit. He was sadly assassinated in 1896.

A rare Chinese export plate, circa 1770, decorated with a Masonic scene of three figures around a cubic stone, looking at plans, with mason's tools around them, 22.5cm diameter.The subject probably refers to the building of the Temple of Solomon, and the service from which this plate came may have been commissioned for the founding of a lodge. The design appears to have been copied from an engraving by Benjamin Cole (1695-1766) for a summons of the Dundee Arms Lodge.Small chips / fritting to rim, and some minor gilt and enamel wear. Otherwise in good condition.

A rare suite of 18th century Worcester porcelain, possibly painted by James Giles, including a cream jug, tea caddy, sucrier, coffee can and teacup, decorated with a floral pattern in purple and blue enamels and gilt.This collection was featured on Antiques Roadshow with the specialist David Batty who proposed an attribution to James Giles during a visit to Colchester recorded in 1993, shown 1994The sucrier cover has a staple repair to the finial, and some nibbles to the rim of the finial. The lid of the caddy has a tiny loss an applied leaf. There is some minor git wear commensurate with age and use. Otherwise in good condition.

R3, which states that this service was commissioned for Horatio Walpole who married Lady Rachel Cavendish in 1748.***CONDITION REPORT***The first dish has some glaze losses and shallow chips to the edge, one with a short stained crack and some splintering around the immediate area.The second dish has been broken in half and has a rare 18th century European repair - it has been enamelled along the break and refired which has caused some black speckling and fritting to the underside, with worn repairers mark to the base also. A fine and rare Frederick Edmund Winkler bisque doll, in original box, German, circa 1894-1899, the Bähr and Pröschild head impressed 320-14 dep, with open mouth and moulded upper teeth, weighted blue glass eyes, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, with unusual jointed wood and composition body, probably by Adolf Wislizenus, in all original cream pleated dress with rose pink velvet lace edged collar and matching bonnet trimmed with lace, cream pink and olive satin cut ribbons, the original box labelled 1/12dz 1501-4 VC Bébé articulé et incassable D.R.G.M. 27589 Made in Germany, 24in.The German Doll Encyclopaedia 1800-1939 by Jürgen and Marianne Cieslik, page 336 states that Bébé articulé was the registered trade mark of F.E. Winkler for jointed dolls. It is believed that the head was originally made by Bähr and Pröschild in 1894 although the trade mark was not registered until 1899 when Winkler won the Paris Medaille d'Or. His dolls were obviously intended for French market. Christie’s, New York, An era of inspiration: 17th century Chinese porcelains from the collection of Julia and John Curtis, 16 March 2015, lot number 3574, for a Kangxi blue and white cylindrical censer featuring a rare ‘eighteen luohan’ design featuring smaller scale figures in a landscape.***CONDITION REPORT***Provenance - UK private collection, 1920s or earlier, thence by family descent.This collection of late Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain and bronze vessels, lots 137 to 163, has been owned by a single Cotswold family for a number of generations dating back to the 1920s or earlier.The collection was formerly on display at the family home in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, UK before the house was sold in the 1980s. Some interior photos taken c.1982 show a number of the pieces on display in the family house and an inventory undertaken in 1948 by the local Campden auctioneer and valuer Alfred Bower lists many of the items. Extracts of the 1948 inventory are included where they correspond to the relevant lots in the sale.This censer might be part of item 388 on the 1948 inventory incorrectly described as ‘3 Chinese Blue and White Cylinder pen holders on carved wood stand Kang Hsi 6” high’. There is also a firing crack to the inside edge of the foot which is not visible on the interior, typical minor glaze imperfections all over, some slight caramelisation and staining to the glaze to the underside of the censer. A gentleman's rare late 1950's stainless steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer wrist watch, with black dial, baton and quarterly Arabic numerals and 'frog's foot' winding crown, model no. 6610, serial no. 360265, movement c.1030 and inside case back numbered 1/1958, case diameter 36mm, on a stainless steel Rolex bracelet no. 78360 580, no box or papers,***CONDITION REPORT***Minor mottling? to the dial and appears quite discoloured. Dial cover quite scratched. Winding action quite stiff. Minor surface nicks and scratches to the case back and sides and the bracelet, mainly visible on the clasp. Wendy Ramshaw OBE (1939-2018) for NMEC, a rare prototype Millennium Dome VVIP medal, a prototype VIP Dome medal, a prototype crew Dome medal and packaging, the first a prototype VVIP Dome medal presented in a grey resin case. This resin case rotates to open. It is made of recycled plastics that has been machined. It also acts as a display, as it can stand on it’s side. Wendy Ramshaw ultimately decided that she would not use this design, hence this case is the only one in existance. The medal is made of layers of stainless steel, nanocrystalline diamond-coated steel bisected by a gold ‘meridian line’ rod, made by Ramshaw, 72mm, there are believed to be less than ten VVIP medals in existence, a prototype steel and gilded metal medal, 72mm, a NMEC crew steel prototype with inscriptions, 72mm, spare various prototype packaging, together with printed correspondence from Wendy Ramshaw and one finished NMEC crew medal in cardboard packaging.Background – Wendy Ramshaw was selected to supply a number of medals following a national competition to choose the medal designers. The winners were selected by a committee of eminent individuals from the design director at the Royal Mint, Director of the RSA, Rector of the Royal College of Art, Brian Neale RA, Leonard Mannasseh OBE, David Mellor of David Mellor Design, and Mark Jones National Museum of Scotland.Provenance - the archive of the former Design & Development Director for the New Millennium Experience Company, c.1999-2000. Wendy Ramshaw OBE (1939-2018) for NMEC, a rare prototype Millennium Dome VVIP medal and two prototype crew medals and packaging, the first a prototype VVIP medal presented in a cream resin case. The case is made of recycled yoghurt pots, hence the metallic flakes in it. It was because of this unique aspect that Wendy Ramshaw chose this as the final design and material for the case. The medal is made of layers of stainless steel, nanocrystalline diamond-coated steel bisected by a gold ‘meridian line’ rod, made by Ramshaw, 72mm, there are believed to be less than ten VVIP medals in existence, two NMEC crew steel prototypes with and without inscriptions, 72mm, various cardboard prototype packaging, together with printed correspondence from Wendy Ramshaw and one finished NMEC crew medal in cardboard packaging.Provenance - the archive of the former Design & Development Director for the New Millennium Experience Company, c.1999-2000. A rare Meissen Hausmaler teacup and saucer, the porcelain c.1730s, later decorated in enamels c.1740-50s, blue underglaze crossed swords within concentric circles, underglaze H to tea bowl, pressnummer 14 to tea bowl and 64 to saucer, the exteriors of brown ground decorated in tooled gilding with insects in flight, the interiors with underglaze blue concentric rings around the centers and rims, the centers decorated with a townscape featuring a lady, with gilt highlights, surrounded by iron red scrolling oak leaf borders within gilded circles below four floral sprigs, the saucer 12.1cm diameter (2) (AF)Condition Report: Large repaired crack to the tea bowl, some minor losses and scratches to the brown exteriors, a small firing crack over the crossed swords of the saucer.
