Wheatley had known Hitchcock for a few years by this point and had gifted him a copy of The Forbidden Territory the previous year. Both men had been hopeful of a film adaptation of The Forbidden Territory with Hitchcock at the helm, however the production was beset by problems and was eventually directed by Phil Rosen. This copy could indicate that Wheatley was hoping to reignite the great director's interest with his latest publication, if so however this was sadly to no avail.

Lot 300

GANDHI MAHATMA: (1869-1948) Indian Political and Spiritual Leader during the Indian Independence Movement. An important Autograph Manuscript Signed, M K Gandhi, three pages, 8vo, N[ew] D[elhi], 21st December 1947. The manuscript is entitled Laws of Health and is written in response to a letter by Brijlal Nehru which had been published on 17th December. Gandhi writes, in part, 'Shri Brijlal Nehru, himself a faddist like me, has written to the Press belauding the statement of the Minister of Health that “a very great deal of our ill health is due to our own fault” and saying that there is to his knowledge no governmental agency responsible for removing this fault. He adds…(at this point, and two others later, Gandhi indicates which part of Nehru's published text he wishes to quote, in part, 'The attention of our Health Ministers has so far been confined to the establishment of hospitals, sanitaria, clinics, dispensaries….no institutions have been founded for the prevention of disease by bringing home to the people the need of correct living and the methods of doing so')….He then goes on to suggest…..(Gandhi again indicates the text of Nehru to quote, in part, 'that a “separate branch be established to attend to the promotion of health as distinguished from treatment of disease…..')……Why does this fellow faddist want a separate branch for this very necessary purpose. This was the irresponsible [later altered to 'fashion' in the published version of this manuscript] under the old regime which went on piling expenditure on expenditure and deluded itself & the gullible public that the greater the expense the greater the utility. I would have the Minister of Health require the the doctors under her & the other staff understand that their first care must be attainment & preservation of the health of the public whom they are paid to serve. As a preliminary step the writer…..(Gandhi indicates the text to be quoted, and instructs '(for the omitted portion put stars)')….,Indeed, the teaching of the laws of Health should be obligatory in all schools & colleges. If the treatise recommended by Shri Brijlal Nehru is brought out I hope the authors would be instructed not to avoid the introduction of disease under the guise of preserving health such as the craze for various inoculations'. Signed and dated by Gandhi at the conclusion in the left margin of the final page. Accompanied by Gandhi's original printed newspaper copy of Brijlal Nehru's letter as published in the press, bearing several ink deletions and the numerals 1, 2, 3 in the margin in Gandhi's hand, referring to the insertions he wished to make in his manuscript. As was Gandhi's custom, the present manuscript is written on the verso of three separate letters written to him, and these are also of interest and significance, the first page written to the verso of the upper half of an autograph letter to Gandhi ('My dear Gandhiji') from M. K. Bhaskar and stating, in part, 'We want a great and glorious India. For this two fundamental evils should be eradicated. (i) Poverty (ii) Religious fanaticism and distinctions based on caste and creed…..', the second page written to the verso of an A.L.S. by R. C. Sethi to Gandhi ('Respected Mahatmaji') dated 13th November 1947, stating, in part, 'Will you please remove my doubt as follows - Is God the creator of this world and a single power governing this universe or a soul like Rama, Lord Krishna…..who had existed physically and that the world is from infinite time…..' and the third is written to the verso of an unsigned typed note of compliments from the Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of External Affairs and Commonwealth Relations, forwarding an enclosure to Gandhi in New Delhi and dated 6th December 1947, with blind embossed insignia of the Government of India to the upper left corner. An extremely rare manuscript of fine content regarding the health of India's public, a subject which was of importance to Gandhi. Some light age wear and small pinholes to the upper left corner of each page, a light band of uniform age toning to the left half of the first page, and ink show through from the verso to the second page. The newspaper article with a small area of paper loss to the upper left corner. G, 2 Brijlal Nehru (1884-1964) Indian Civil Servant and a notable member of the Nehru family. Cousin of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and an eminent leader of the Indian independence movement under the tutelage of Gandhi.  The present manuscript was originally published, with a few minor alterations, in Gandhi's weekly journal Harijan on 28th December 1947. India's first Health Minister was Amrit Kaur (1889-1964) and she was appointed to the post in Jawaharlal Nehru's first cabinet on 16th August 1947. An eminent Gandhian, freedom fighter and social activist, Kaur would serve as Minister of Health for ten years.  Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948, a little over a month after writing the present manuscript. The fact that Gandhi's assassin, Nathuram Godse, was a right-wing advocate of Hindu Nationalism and religious fanatic, makes the comments on the first sheet of the present manuscript that, for a 'great and glorious' India to exist religious fanaticism should be eradicated, even more poignant. Autograph Manuscripts by Gandhi rarely appear at auction. American Book Prices Current record only ten examples as having been sold in the last thirty-five years, the most recent by Sotheby's in 2007.

ROSSELLINI ROBERTO: (1906-1977) Italian Film Director, husband of Ingrid Bergman from 1950-57. A good, rare A.L.S., Roberto, two pages, 4to, New Delhi, 9th January n.y. (1957), to Ercolino, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Imperial, in Italian. Rossellini thanks his correspondent for their telegram and postcard, which has increased his nostalgia, and continues ‘I started and restarted to write you the letter to explain my position about Ingrid’s journey. It is hard to talk about your most intimate feelings. I’m all upside down. I think it’s better if I work off my anguish first. You know, dear Ercolino, the…..contract had one meaning only for me: to lighten the atmosphere to facilitate Ingrid’s rapprochement with her daughter. I don’t need to tell you more, at least for the moment, I think’, further stating ‘This morning I had a long conversation with Nehru and tomorrow I leave with him for a three-day trip. I hope to be able to film highly interesting things. I’m not morally and physically okay, but…..everything will be over. In three days I hope to be able to write a less inconclusive letter’. An emotional and heartfelt letter, not least in its references to Ingrid Bergman. Some very light, extremely minor creasing and some light uniform age toning to the edges of the first page, about VG Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982) Swedish Actress, Academy Award winner. In 1952 she gave birth to the twin daughters Isotta Ingrid Rossellini and Isabella Rossellini. In 1957 the Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, invited Roberto Rossellini to make the documentary India and inject some life into the floundering Indian Films Division. Despite being married to Bergman, the director entered into an affair with the screenwriter Sonali Das Gupta, herself married to a local filmmaker. The affair led to a huge scandal in India, as well as Hollywood, and Nehru asked Rossellini to leave the country. Shortly afterwards Rossellini and Bergman separated.

Also signed and inscribed by an unidentified show girl dancer (?) Gloria Randall (‘To Lillian from Gloria Randall’). Lot 59

HARLOW JEAN: (1911-1937) American Actress and Sex Symbol. An excellent vintage signed 10 x 13 photograph of Harlow seated in a full length pose wearing a plain black dress. Photograph by Clarence Sinclair Bull and bearing his blindstamp to the lower white border and his Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer credit stamp to the verso. A typed caption lightly affixed to the verso indicates that the photograph dates from the time of The Secret Six (1931), an early gangster movie in which the actress starred as Anne Courtland. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background and dated 4th June 1936 in her hand. Harlow has further added a brief sentiment in her hand, 'May yoeur (sic) life be happy always!' to a light area at the base of the image. Authentic signed photographs of Harlow are extremely rare - as the greeting on this photograph illustrates Harlow was only semi-literate and the vast majority of autographs were signed by her mother. A few light surface and corner creases, otherwise VG Provenance: The present photograph was originally in the collection of Jimmy Starr (1904-1990, American Screenwriter of the 1930s and later a Hollywood columnist) and bears his stamp to the verso, and was later included in the Alan Robinson collection of cinema autographs (IAA Ltd., lot 884, 29th September 2007).

Signed photographs of Wood associated with this cult film, at an early stage in her career, are extremely rare and desirable. Waugh states that they have just had the great pleasure of a short visit from his correspondent's son, John, remarking 'I fear it was rather dull for him as we have no musical instruments or even gramophone in the house and our cosy green countryside has little to attract one brought up among the eagle haunted mountains and springs of Hellas. MANSFIELD KATHERINE: (1888-1923) New Zealand Writer & Poet. A rare A.L.S., Tiger, one page, 8vo, Runcton, near Chichester, n.d. (annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand at the head of the page as being written on 12th October 1912), to Eddie Marsh. Mansfield invites her correspondent to lunch and further adds 'War has been proclaimed & Tiger & I are going into action against the High Courts of Justice', concluding 'We badly want the counsel of our friends'. Autographs of Mansfield are rare in any form as a result of her tragically early death at the age of 34. With a light strip of former mounting to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Edward Marsh (1872-1953) British Polymath, Arts Patron & Civil Servant.  The present letter is signed by Mansfield using her hypocorism, which was also shared by her future second husband, John Middleton Murry, whom she refers to in the text. They had begun a relationship in 1911 which culminated in their marriage in 1918.  Presuming that the date of October 1912 is accurate on the present letter then the content most likely refers to Charles Granville, the publisher of the avant-garde magazine Rhythm, which John Middleton Murry was editor of and to which Mansfield made literary contributions. Granville absconded to Europe in October 1912 and left Murry responsible for the debts the magazine had accumulated.  Provenance: The present letter was formerly part of the Ray Rawlins Collection of Autograph Letters and Historical Manuscripts and a portion of it is illustrated within his book The Guinness Book of World Autographs (1977). Two brief pencil annotations appear in his hand to the verso of the letter.

Lot 150

A rare, large vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 15 photograph of Tolstoy seated in a three quarter length pose wearing his familiar dark peasant's tunic. Photograph published by Joseph Daziaro of Moscow and with his small printed label neatly affixed to the base of the verso. Signed by Tolstoy in Cyrillic across the lower part of the image and dated Yalta, 26th December 1901 in his hand. Signed photographs of Tolstoy of this size are particularly rare and desirable. The signature and inscription partially run across a darker area of the image and the text is a little light although legible. Some light overall age wear and minor scuffing to the image, G The present photograph is inscribed to Pavel Alexandrovich Boulanger (1865-1925) Russian Railway official, a friend of Tolstoy and Tolstoyan Disciple. Boulanger was employed by the Moscow-Kursk Railway company and helped to arrange transport to the Crimea in the summer of 1901, where Tolstoy had been ordered to convalesce by his doctor following an illness. Tolstoy signed this photograph in 1901, the year that he was selected to receive the first Nobel Prize for Literature. In October he had turned down the honour believing that the prize money would bring unwanted complications to his life.

Lowndes. All have signed with their names alone in bold, dark fountain pen inks. A rare grouping of signatures including several England Captains.
