What would be the work of Leonard Foujita if we failed to examine the importance of feline representation throughout his life? This singular affection undoubtedly stems from Nippon veneration of this sacred animal. In the Land of the Rising Sun, it is rare to find a household devoid of its depiction; many have a manekineko in their homes, a symbol of wealth, luck and happiness. It was undoubtedly imbued with this belief that Foujita, on his way home one evening, came across Miké, a stray cat who had followed him to his Montparnasse home. After this endearing creature became Foujita's de facto cat, the artist did not hesitate to include Miké in his paintings, notably in many of his self-portraits, or alongside his muses. Throughout his career, Foujita never ceased to portray this animal, depicting its various postures and demeanours.A totem animal for Foujita, many similarities connected them: patience, delicacy, sensitivity, agility, valour, love. With painstaking precision, the Master illustrates once again the affection and fascination he feels for this animal. He meticulously and forcefully depicts this feline, animal king under the same mystical halo as his muses. A sense of wonder for the technique of one of the greatest artists of the Paris school impacts us irrefutably when confronted by this drawing. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A popular theme, the Adoration of the Magi relates to the gospel of Matthew 2:11 in the Bible where the newly born Jesus is presented with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh by the three kings Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In this particular example the repousse is in beautiful condition and has a very high relief to it which is typical of fine continental work. Another indicative feature of continental work is when the repousse is on two levels as with the current lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Joseph Martineau, Senr, London. An exceptional, fine and rare gold and ruby set key wind triple case pocket watch with shagreen outer caseDate: Circa 1760Movement: Gilt full plate fusee verge, plain 3-arm balance, pierced and engraved winged balance cock, silver regulation, square baluster pillars, No.962Dial: White enamel chapter with black Roman numeral hour markers interspersed with 12 rubies, black outer minute track with Arabic numeral 5 minute markers, further rubies set as inner and outer bands comprising of 44 stones, gilt Louis XV style handsCase: Polished inner, numbered 962, exceptional middle case set with 10 rings of rubies to the back and 2 rows to the front bezel comprising of 383 rubies in total, ruby set release button and stem, outer studded shagreen case with exhibition glassSigned: Movement, inner case stamped SGSize: 54mm Accompaniments: Sotheby's catalogue dated 15 December 1958Footnotes:The current lot is a stunning example of 18th century horology at its best combining the art of watchmaking with exquisite gem setting. In total there are 441 rubies individually set forming a perfect radiating circle to the back and bezel of the middle case and further decoration to the dial. When it is taken into consideration that this watch is around 350 years old it is simply astounding all the different components and actions that needed to happen for just the watch case alone to be created – from the setting of the rubies to the actual sourcing of the stones. London in the 18th century was a melting pot of imports coming from all around the world and precious stones were a part of this. Based on the colour these could be Burmese rubies and again the volume of stones for just one piece is an indicator of how much wealth and demand for luxury there was in London during this period. The condition remains remarkable and shows that this timepiece was as much of a treasure now as when it was first made. Joseph Martineau is recorded in Loomes as working in London from 1744-94, first at Orange Street and then later at St. Martins Court.Provenance:Sothebys December 15th 1958, Lot 136, purchased for £380This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

William Snow in Marlebrough. A fine and rare silver and leather key wind pair case pocket watch with pin decorationDate: Circa 1670Movement: Gilt full plate gut fusee verge, pierced and engraved elongated balance cock, silver regulation, tulip pillarsDial: Silver with central engraved rosette, black Roman numerals, black inner quarter hour divisions, blued steel single handCase: Polished inner, leather covered outer with fine silver pin decoration, ring pendant and bowSigned: MovementSize: 53mm Accompaniments: Transcript of Nicholas Snows willFootnotes:No other maker with the name William Snow is recorded for this period other than the son of Nicholas Snow of Salisbury, a town just 30 miles south of Marlborough (modern spelling) who in his will says that '...my working tooles belonging to my trade shall be kept and preserved for the use and benefit of my said sonne William Snowe...'The performance of watches greatly improved when the movements were made with four, rather than three wheel trains, and this is an early example. The balance cock has an unusually open foliate design which is superbly executed and both the table and foot are bordered, an exceptional feature at this date. It is fitted over a tenon - or block - in the plate in order to secure it in position in the traditional manner but it is not pinned to the plate but screwed to it. Snow may well have considered this a better arrangement than fitting feet on the underside of the cock foot and it allowed him to follow a fine and delicate design. The decorative pin work on the back of the leather covered outer case, which is in superb condition, is characteristic of the exuberant floral designs which appeared after the Restoration of the Monarchy.Provenance:Purchased from Dennis Brown circa 1947T P Camerer Cuss CollectionIllustrated:F J Britten, Old Clocks and Watches and Their Makers, 7th Edition, Spon Lts 1956, illustrated plate 30, pages 48-9 and listed 'One of the first high-quality provincial watch-makers'T P Camerer Cuss, The Story of Watches, MacGibbon & Kee, 1952, plate 22, page 65T P Camerer Cuss, The Country Life Book of Watches, Country Life, 1967, plate 24, page 29T P & T A Camerer Cuss, The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches, ACC 1976, plate 27, page 76Exhibited:British Clockmaker's Heritage Exhibition, Science Museum, May-September 1952, exhibit 250For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Thomas Tompion, London. A fine and rare 18K gold and gilt metal key wind quarter repeating pair case pocket watchDate: London Hallmark for 1709-10Movement: Gilt full plate fusee verge, pierced and engraved balance cock, diamond end stone, silver regulation, two polished hammers striking a bell secured to the inner back by 1 screw, round baluster pillars, No.350Dial: Champlevé signed Tompion within a central cherub and garland cartouche, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track with 5 minute markers, blued beetle and poker handsCase: Polished 19th century custom made gilt metal inner, pierced and engraved original gold outer with engraved monogram MM beneath a crown for Mary Montagu, dust ring numbered insideSigned: Dial & movement signed Thomas Tompion, London, outer case stamped WS for William SherwoodSize: 58mmFootnotes:Thomas Tompion is commonly referred to as the father of English clockmaking. His workshops were renowned and he had patrons in the highest levels of English society and with good reason. He has created some of the greatest clocks in the world and was one of the first to use balance springs in watches. He famously employed George Graham who married his niece and succeeded him in the company. The current lot represents an important quarter repeating watch of the highest quality and one of the earliest surviving with jewelled bearings made for Mary, Duchess of Montagu (July 1689 - May 1751). It is one of just three recorded that can be proven to have been made for a woman at this period, one of which, remarkably, was first owned by Mary's sister Ann. The cypher on the outer case 'MM' below the coronet of a Duke or Duchess with five visible strawberry leaves set on a rim confirms this connection. Mary was the wife of John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu and the fourth and youngest daughter and co-heir of the celebrated John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. She married in 1705, some four years prior to his succession to the Dukedom on 9th March 1709. As 1709 is the same year as the hallmark on the case it is quite conceivable that she received the watch as a gift either to celebrate the marriage or possibly as a twenty first birthday gift. The movement is one of the very earliest surviving watches with pierced jewelled bearings and diamond end stones for the balance. The ruby bearings are in settings top and bottom, each with small polished countersinks above and below. The beautifully pierced and foliate engraved cock has a diamond end stone and a further diamond end stone is set in a dovetail piece in the bottom potence. Tompion appears to have begun jewelling some of his watches in 1708 and, of those surviving recorded examples, there is just one repeater earlier (number 207, inner case hallmarked 1708/9) and timepiece 4002/3 details of which are confused.Provenance:Mary Montagu nee ChurchillR A Miles Collection to T P Camerer Cuss 3 July 1953T P Camerer Cuss CollectionIllustrated:T P Camerer Cuss, The Country Life Book of Watches, Country Life, 1967, plate 43T P & T A Camerer Cuss, The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches, AC C 1976, plate 49 and colour plate 4For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

George Graham. A very fine and rare 18K gold key wind repeating pair case pocket watch with repousse decorationDate: London Hallmark for 1718-9Movement: Finely engraved gilt full plate fusee verge, pierced and engraved winged balance cock with engraved angels head, diamond end stone, silver regulation, two hammers striking on a bell secured by 1 screw to the inner case, flat steel arm for dumb repeating protrudes between 5 and 6, round baluster pillars, No.445Dial: Later 18th century white enamel, black Arabic numerals, black outer minute track with 5 minute markers, gold beetle and poker handsCase: Finely pierced and engraved inner case decorated with scrolling foliage and birds, snakes and dolphin heads, 'MP' monogram, pierced and engraved outer case with repousse depicting Hercules being led, possibly by Hermes, to Cerberus with four embossed shells to the quarters depicting busts of classical figures, stirrup bow, numbered 445 beneath pendant, to inner bezel edge of outer case and to inside back of inner case, signed inner cap scratch numbered 445 insideSigned: Movement and cap signed Geo Graham, inner case stamped 'WS' for William SherwoodSize: Inner 43mm, outer 51mm Accompaniments: 1951 'George Graham Bi-Centenary Exhibition' catalogue, 'London Calling' newspaper clipping from February 21, 1952 with the current lot illustratedFootnotes:George Graham was born in 1673. He was lauded in the world of Horology and worked for Thomas Tompion, both of whom are buried in Westminster Abbey. He became a Freeman in the Clockmakers' Company in 1695 and became a master in 1722. The outer case of the present watch is remarkably well preserved with the fine details still clearly visible and is one of the earliest recorded fully developed scenes known for Graham. This is a fine example of the watchmaking art and the art of the goldsmith which by such a maker is rarely seen on the market. The current lot features a finely produced repousse outer case depicting Hercules being led by the hand by a figure in classical armour. With the inclusion of three dog heads just entering the scene on the left it can be assumed that this is taken from Hercules Twelfth Labour where he was sent by Eurystheus, King of Tiryns, to bring Cerberus back from the underworld. Although the second figure does not bear any of the usual distinguishing figures of Hermes it is possible that it is he who is represented leading Hercules as he was the normal guide of the underworld. Justin Vulliamy uon, London. An important and rare gold key wind pair case pocket watch possibly made for George IV whilst Prince of WalesDate: Circa 1778-80Movement: Gilt full plate cylinder, pierced balance cock engraved with foliate scrolls, a grotesque mask and two dolphin heads, diamond end stone, silver regulation with serpent tongue indicator, square baluster pillarsDial: White enamel, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track with Arabic 5 minute markers, diamond set fleur de lys hour and poker minute handCase: Polished inner numbered 139, finely engraved outer with applied blue enamel panel bearing monogram 'PW' beneath a coronetSigned: Movement signed Justin Vulliamy, inner case stamped 'PM' for Peter MounierSize: 47mmFootnotes:The current lot is believed to have possibly been made for George IV when he was Prince of Wales. Upon the back is the Prince's coronet and the cypher PW within an oval medallion of polychrome enamel. The coronet is in gold, red and white, the cypher in gold, these on a dark translucent royal blued engine turned ground within a white enamel border. The medallion is within a border of radiating flutes with a further engraved border of continuous ovals interrupted by engraved foliate decoration.George Augustus Frederick was born in 1762 so it is believed that this watch was made for him at some point in his late teens. By eighteen his life style and extravagant living had already become an embarrassment to his family and it is said that he would give watches in settlement of gambling debts. Engraved on the movement is 'uon', Vulliamys cryptic numbering code which Vaudrey Mercer attempted to decipher in the Antiquarian Horology Volume XIV September 1983. If Mercer's interpretation is correct the code translates to number 347. Provenance:19 February 1959 Lady A Babington - Anne nee Egerton (1908-1964), wife of Geoffrey Babington, daughter of the 4th Earl of Ellesmere. Lady Babington confirmed in the 1950s that the watch was the property of the late Mr James Robert Anning who was connected for over 40 years with the London and County Bank Ltd, then the Westminster Bank Ltd. It came to him through his first wife's family whose grandfather, it is understood, was closely associated with George IV when Prince of Wales.T P Camerer Cuss CollectionIllustrated:Cedric Jagger, Royal Clocks,, Robert Hale, 1983, plates 119-120 page 88 with textT P Camerer Cuss, The Country Life Book of Watches, Country Life, 1967, colour plate IIIT P & T A Camerer Cuss, The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches, AC C 1976, colour plate 7For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Thomas Reid is recorded as working in Edinburgh from 1781 when he succeeded his cousin James Cowan.
