A Jamaican tortoiseshell comb in a silver mounted case dated 1688, one side of the rectangular case scratch engraved and gold dusted with an armorial with motto 'Indus Uterque Servietum' above the date, the reverse with 'A Cashu Tree', the comb with graded tines each side of floral engraving, the case 16 x 10cm (6.25 x 4 in) Other Notes: A very rare 17th century engraved tortoiseshell case from Port Royal, Jamaica, containing the original wig comb. The craftsman known for producing such pieces, Paul Bennett, worked in Port Royal between 1655, the year that Britain seized the island, and 1692 when the town was decimated by the Great Earthquake and tsunami. Little is known of Paul Bennett other than that he was an Englishman listed in the 1673 property records as a combmaker and was clearly familiar with the social mores of the Old World. The comb cases provide an important social document and evidence of a rising colonial mindset. Possession of a combcase of this material and craftsmanship was an important accessory for those who had made their fortunes in the New Land but wished to enter the cultural elite of the Old World. Randle Holme's "Academie of Armory" 1702, details wigcombs as a vital part of a gentleman's equipment. By couching the material trappings of their newfound wealth in a familiar but interestingly exotic form, colonial merchants and planters were able to display their newly attained social status and claim influential positions in European society. Research (Geoffrey Willis, 1957) has shown that there are only sixteen combcases known to exist; one on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum, eleven in the Institute of Jamaica and two in private collections.

A rare and probably unique set of forty three English silver and enamel thimbles by Peter Swingler (died 2015) commemorating the Presidents of the United States of America 1801-2009. Each thimble with an enamel oval portrait of the relevant president flanked to each side by an eagle, to the reverse an oval enamel plaque giving name, dates served and numerical ranking, within a cast scroll frame, over a frieze in blue enamel ïPresidents of AmericaÍ (43)A letter dated 22nd November 2009 from P. Swingler to Mary Cruwys states the following:Dear Mrs CruwysI was pleased to hear from your letter that you have received, the Presidents of America. The sets were painted approximately 20 years ago, and only 3 sets were completed. I have noted from your letter that you would like your set brought up to date. Starting with:- Grover Cleveland for his 2ND term No. 24 also No. 38 Gerald Ford for his 2ND term No. 41 George H. Bush } No. 42 Bill Clinton } Total six No. 43 George W. Bush } thimbles No. 44 Barrack Obama } At this moment the Silver Thimbles are now being made ready for me to start painting. The cost for each Thimble would be £90.00 and will be completed in the new year. Would you please let me know if you have any queries. We hope you are both keeping well.Yours SincerelyP SwinglerThere are several discrepancies and anomalies in the letter. It appears that Mrs Cruwys had only received her set shortly before the letter was written not when the sets (one of only three) were apparently made, circa 1989. The second thimble for Grover Cleveland referred to does not appear with the present lot, the fact that 41-44 were ordered probably makes this the only set of this magnitude. In a further contradiction the majority of the thimbles are hall marked for 1984 the exception being (1) (6) (27) which are for 1977 (10) (11) (12) for 1986 (38) (41) (42) (43) and (44) which are for 2003, all bear Peter SwinglerÍs makers mark with the exception of (38) (41) (42) (43) which are apparently marked G & H. Why Swingler states in 2009 ñat this moment the thimbles are being madeÆ’..and will be completed in the new year when he was using blanks supplied in 2003 requires interpretation.(From the collection of the late Mary Cruwys).
