Oblong 4to, half black calf, spine gilt in compartments, lettered directly in gilt in one, a.e.g.; 70 leaves including 34 coloured plates. A dramatic and colourful display of honours (with accompanying background) richly illuminated with gold and silver on the plates.Binding rubbed and scuffed, cracking to head and foot of upper joint with short sections of spine detached, some slight, variable marginal staining to plates, plate 47 creased on inner margin with larger stain to upper left corner, some slight foxing. Fairy Tales The Renowned History of Little Red Riding Hood in Verse. Printed for B. Tabart, New Bond Street, and J. Harris, St Paul's Churchyard, 1808 (title corrected by hand from 1807, wrappers and frontis. dated 1808). 16mo, org. wrappers; engraved frontis. and 11 plates, all hand-coloured. Tabart and Harris' remarkable publishing success went against contemporary opposition to fairy tales and an almost universal didactic and spiritual tenor to children's books. In re-publishing polished and well-produced versions of fairy tales and chapbook stories they captured the public imagination and ensured that their versions would become the standard texts. Interestingly, despite their diametrically opposed viewpoints, Tabart actually published the work of Sarah Trimmer - one of his most vocal detractors. Whilst not the sole driver, Tabart's efforts were a major part of restoring imagination to the nursery, bringing the supernatural and the bizarre to children. Copies of his work, despite their importance, are rare and highly collectable. with The Trial and Execution of Cock Robin. Published by W. Darton, [c.1819. owner's ink inscription on verso of plates]. 16mo, org. wrappers; 14 engraved hand-coloured plates (missing first two). A scarce early children's book. Both copies are soiled and worn with creases, tears and marking, and former owners' MSS notes on versos however they remain charming and rare examples of early children's publishing.

GWJ [Gibbs Walker Jordan] The Observations of Newton Concering the Inflections of Light; Accompanied by other observations differing from his and appearing to lead to a change of his Theory of Light and Colours, Printed for T. Cabell, Jun. and W. Davies, Strand, 1799. 8vo, half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments with contrasting morocco lettering-piece in one, yellow edges; pp. [4 (title, verso blank, dedication, verso blank)], [1]-134; nine pages of plates, letterpress tables to text. Rare scientific text on light, drawing on observations to question elements of Newton's Observations. Jordan believed that he had discovered the ''principles of all the phaenomena of light; and not of light alone, but also of heat and of electricity, and the relations which exist between these.'' From these he believed he had found many wonderful discoveries about the nature of the universe. Unfortunately, ''Busied in the cares of life'' he did not find the occasion to undertake the work of literary composition. This work at least, he completed and although he feared self-deception in his observations, ''Upon the faith, however, of these same Observations, some expectation may be formed, and some credit claimed.''

PIAF EDITH: (1915-1963) French Singer. A very fine A.L.S., ‘Ton petit hochet oiseau’, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 26th August 1955, to ‘Mon petit bonhomme’ (Jacques Pills), in French. Piaf, affectionately known as The Little Sparrow, writes a warm letter to her husband, commencing by enquiring if he is very busy with rehearsals and advising him to take some rest, remarking ‘Everything is fine and everything will be fine! It is strange, but when I rest, I am almost more tired than when I work. You get used to doing nothing, and the smallest effort seems enormous, a lesson that I am relearning currently’. Piaf adds that she will provide an address in New York where Pills can write to her and continues ‘I can’t wait to hear the latest from you about the public’s reception in the other cities in England. You never talk about that country, and I’d love to hear your impression. At any rate, I think the public is great’, also offering further advice, ‘The other thing I’d like is for you to have an apartment in London where a cook could come to keep you on your diet. I wonder how you manage in restaurants. Be very, very careful! Sometimes I do worry, knowing how kind you are and how you would not want to put anybody out but rather eat anything at all. And you know that is what you must absolutely not do!’ The singer concludes her letter by writing ‘I am a little bored, my darling, and when I don’t hear from you, I get very sad, but I know how difficult it is when you are busy with rehearsals. Relax when you can, my sweet one, and think about how much I love you’. A rare letter of wonderful content and association. About EX   Jacques Pills (1906-1970) French Singer & Actor, husband of Piaf 1952-57.

DYLAN BOB: (1941-  ) American Singer & Songwriter, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 2016. A hardback bound 4to edition of Hematite, the yearbook of Hibbing High School, issued in 1959 and thus marking the 50th anniversary since the first yearbook was issued in 1909 (then entitled The Rail Splitter when the school was known as Lincoln High School), the present copy previously belonging to student Marietta Turk and bearing a number of signatures and inscriptions to her by various friends and fellow students including Bob Dylan. The front pastedown and front free endpaper feature nine individual blue ink signatures and inscriptions, Dylan's appearing just below the centre of the front free endpaper and stating, in full, 'I'll write under Echo's name. Good luck in your acting career. Everyone knows you'll make a good one. Sincerely, Bob Zimmerman'. Other signatures and inscriptions to the pages include those of Echo Helstrom (who dated Dylan whilst at Hibbing High School), 'Hi Turk, I don't have to bid you a fond farewell because I'll most likely see you in the L & B. It sure has been nice having you as a friend all these years. I hope we can continue to stay friends as the years progress. A pal, Echo', Rochelle Matonich ('Well, the last of our high school years is finally over. It was really nice having you in Dramatics. Remember "Sob Stuff". Boy was that play a blast. Don't forget our Winston breaks….'), Judith Hendrickson ('Remember the days when we were back at old Lincoln….How can we forget. The past twelve years have been long waited for to come to an end, and here we are…..') etc., and a few further signatures and inscriptions appear to other pages at both the front and back of the Yearbook, two also referring to an individual named Bob (Dylan?), 'I remember the first night I met Bob and I slept over your house because I would have come home late. The only trouble with that was that I didn't call my parents so they made me stay in for 2 weeks' and'Remember all the trips to the Y.M.C.A. to see Bob & Tom, when we got there we were too embarrassed to talk to them. Sure hope I see them again in the future'.The inside pages of the yearbook are profusely illustrated and with accompanying text relating to various school events etc., and also feature small portraits of the students, including the young Dylan ('Robert Zimmerman') whom the printed text states wishes 'to join "Little Richard"'. An extremely rare and early example of Dylan's autograph in a yearbook which also records his early musical ambition! Some light overall age wear, a few inside pages loose and with some small areas of paper loss to the lower right corners of the first pages (including the one signed by Dylan) caused by previous damp exposure, otherwise about VG   Provenance: the present yearbook is accompanied by a typed statement of provenance signed by Marietta Turk in August 2017, headed 'My Friendship with Bob Dylan' and stating, in part, '…I went to Hibbing High School with Robert Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan in 1957, 1958 and 1959. I had him in almost all of my classes and he sat behind me in auditorium, so we were in close proximity. His girl friend Echo Helstrom was a good friend of mine and they were "dating" for a period of time. We hung out at the L & B Café….at lunch or after school. We all wore black leather jackets. Sometimes Bob wore a shiny vest and a cowboy hat. There we talked, played the small jukebox in our booth, drank chocolate coca cola, and smoked cigarettes. In our senior year, 1959, Bob and I and some others had Dramatics Class together and were in a play called Sob Story….It must have been okay because the audience roared with laughter and applause. Hence, Bob wrote in my yearbook "Good luck in your acting career. Everyone knows you'll make a good one".'   Bob Dylan, born Robert Zimmerman, formed several bands while attending Hibbing High School in Minnesota, including one named the Golden Chords who performed covers of songs by Little Richard and Elvis Presley.

LENNON JOHN: (1940-1980) English Musician, a member of The Beatles. A good, unusual signed and inscribed colour candid 3.5 x 4 polaroid photograph of Lennon, the image depicting him seated in a half length pose, wearing his trademark circular spectacles, alongside the disc jockey Alan Smith (also known as 'Brother Love') in the WFIL radio studio in Philadelphia in October 1975 during a weekend fundraising broadcast for the Philadelphia Association of Retarded Children. Signed by Lennon in blue ink to the upper white border, 'To da Brother, love, John Lennon' and dated 1975 in his hand, further adding his familiar doodle of a face in his hand to a clear area of the image. A rare signed photograph. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the image which detracts little from the appeal of the photograph. VG   Provenance: Accompanied by a lengthy and detailed typed statement of provenance signed by Alan Smith and dated 6th October 2017, recounting the circumstances under which the present photograph was taken and signed, in part, 'In 1975, Jay Cook, the Program Director…..somehow, in conjunction with Capitol Records, convinced John Lennon to join us to 'kick off' the event [the WFIL/PARC fundraising marathon of non-stop music] on Friday afternoon…..John arrived early, hung around talking with all of us getting to know our names, sensing our personalities, deciding who was funny and who wasn't…..Over the next day and a half I spent an inordinate (amount) of time (as did my wife at the time) with him around the studio….He was open and charming, extremely bright…..My wife took the picture in the radio studio while we were on the air and when we were looking at it, he took it from my hand and signed it and drew the little face on it….John left early Sunday morning to return home to go into virtual seclusion from the public eye until 1980….'

Lot 137

PINK FLOYD: An extremely rare set of vintage blue fountain pen ink signatures by four of the original members of the English rock band Pink Floyd, comprising Roger Waters ('Rog'), Richard Wright ('Rick x'), Syd Barrett ('Syd xx') and Nick Mason ('To Ella, love from the Pink Floyd, Nick'), on an irregularly trimmed feint ruled piece, laid down at the centre of a small 4to page removed from a notebook. Above and below the signatures appear two small newspaper photographs of the band, both signed by each of the four members in blue inks with their first names (some of the signatures across darker areas and a few barely legible), and each laid down to the page. Some light staining to the piece, only very slightly affecting the signatures, evidently caused by the glue used at the time of the original mounting. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the signatures or images, about G The present set of signatures most likely date from 1966 when the band played very small and largely unadvertised shows at the Marquee Club in London, where there were generally no more than fifty fans in attendance.

Lot 139

BOWIE DAVID: (1947-2016) English Musician and Actor. A rare, early vintage blue ink signature ('Davie Jones') on a slim oblong 8vo feint lined page, further signed and inscribed by Denis Taylor ('T Cup') and one other unidentified individual. A single torn file hole to the right edge, and some age wear and creasing, one very slightly affecting Bowie's signature, G   Davy (or Davie) Jones joined The Lower Third in April 1965, the line up consisting of Denis 'Tea-Cup' Taylor, Graham Rivens and Les Mighall. The band had a residency at The Bournemouth Pavilion every Friday and Sunday during the summer season, also performing at the Ventnor Winter Gardens, Isle of Wight every Saturday.    On 16th September 1965, during his period with The Lower Third, Jones made the decision to change his name to David Bowie, largely to avoid the confusion which occurred at the time with Davy Jones of The Monkees.   Provenance: The present signatures were obtained in person by the vendor during rehearsals whilst the band were resident at the Bournemouth Pavilion.

Lot 143

AC/DC: A good, rare series of five identical postcard photographs, the image depicting the five members of the Australian rock band AC/DC standing together in a frivolous group pose with a hangman's noose, each of the postcards individually signed by a member of the band, comprising Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Bon Scott (a rare signature as a result of Scott's untimely death at the age of 33), Mark Evans and Phil Rudd. All have signed in blue inks to clear areas of the images, Scott and Rudd signing with their first names and three also adding the name of the band beneath their signatures. VG to EX, 5   Provenance: The photographs are accompanied by a typed statement signed by the vendor explaining that he obtained the signatures in person upon meeting the band backstage following their performance at the City Hall in Glasgow, Scotland, on 2nd November 1976, during their Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap tour of the United Kingdom.

Lot 152

MACLEAN DONALD: (1913-1983) British Diplomat & Spy, a member of the Cambridge Five. A rare printed 4to edition of the Cambridge University literary periodical Contemporaries, edited by John Kaestlin, Summer 1933, featuring various poems and other literary contributions by individuals including Donald Maclean. Signed (‘Donald Maclean’) by Maclean with his name alone in bold fountain pen ink to the lower margin of an inside page which features his own contribution entitled Puppet. Bound in the original yellow printed paper wrappers. Autographs of Maclean are rare in any form. Some light overall age wear and minor foxing and with a few small neat tears to the edges and spine of the paper wrappers, about VG Donald Maclean studied modern languages at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, arriving at the university in 1931. Whilst there he became a member of the Communist Party and was a relatively well-known figure on campus. His literary efforts, as well as his contribution to the present magazine, included a book review in 1933 for Cambridge Left, a journal to which other communists contributed, and in 1934 he became the editor of Silver Crescent, the Trinity Hall students’ magazine. In his last year at Cambridge Maclean became an agent of The People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD), the interior ministry of the Soviet Union, and graduated with a First in modern languages before entering the Diplomatic Service.

MACLEAN DONALD: (1913-1983) British Diplomat & Spy, a member of the Cambridge Five. An extremely rare original pencil drawing signed by Maclean, one page, 4to, March 1933, on the printed stationery of The Union Society, Cambridge. Maclean has executed an accomplished drawing of a young man seated in a profile head and shoulders pose with a pensive expression on his face. Signed (‘Donald Maclean’) by Maclean in bold pencil at the foot of the drawing and dated March 1933 in his hand. Maclean would appear to have identified the subject of his drawing in his hand with a single name (or series of initials?) which is regretfully somewhat indecipherable, although it can be presumed that the young man was a friend and contemporary of Maclean whilst reading modern languages at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Together with a printed 4to edition of Contemporaries and Makers, edited by John Kaestlin, March 1933, being the Cambridge University literary periodical and containing various printed poems, short stories and essays etc. With the ownership signature of Alastair Morton to the head of the first page and bound in the original maroon printed paper wrappers. A few very light, minor stains to the drawing and some light age wear and minor foxing to the periodical. Having been seized and his sword and baton of rank torn from him, he was due to be escorted to the Hotel de Ville although the furious crowd beat and assaulted him on the way there, eventually lynching him by repeatedly stabbing him with knives, swords and bayonets. Desperate and suffering greatly from the abuse (which had also included him being shot at) de Launay declared 'Enough! Let me die'. Following his killing his head was sawn off by a butcher, fixed to a pike and carried through the streets for several hours before being thrown in the river Seine the next day.
