Shakespeare source book.- Prepositas his Practise, a Work-very necessary to be used for the better preservation of the Health of Man, Translated out of Latin into English by L. M., mostly black letter, title with woodcut fleur-de-lis ornament, woodcut initial and headpiece, title a little soiled with British Library ink stamp to verso and "Duplicate for Sale 1769" stamp below, ink name on recto largely erased causing minor holing with neat tissue repair, red ink marking to table at end, last gathering closely shaved at foot, damp-staining and occasional light browning, medical receipt in an early hand to N2 verso, bookplate with 19th century gift inscription to front pastedown, later red morocco, gilt, neatly and sympathetically rebacked and recornered, rubbed, [STC 20180.7], small 4to, by John Wolfe for Edward White, dwelling at the little north doore of Paules, at the signe of the Gunne, 1588.⁂ Rare book of medical receipts, a possible source book for Ophelia's "garland speech". We can trace no copy at auction since 1935.In his 1979 essay "Ophelia's Herbal" (Economic Botany, 1979, pp.227-232), Lucile Newman cites the present work as a potential source for Ophelia's famous "garland speech", highlighting three receipts in particular (nos. 88, 203 and 212) as containing the herbs mentioned which indicate that she could be intending for their use as abortifacients.

Blackwood was a Scottish author, lawyer, and apologist for Mary. He studied at the universities of Paris and Toulouse and was rector of the former in 1567-1568.

Porcacchi (Tommaso) Le Isole Piu Famose del Mondo, 3 parts in 1, engraved architectural title and maps and plans by Girolamo Porro, woodcut printer's device at end with initials H.S.G.K, F3 with short marginal tears and corner repaired, small previous owner's inscription to final f. verso, occasional light ink- or finger-soiling but overall still a remarkably clean and crisp copy, modern antique style blind-stamped calf, small light stain to upper cover, small folio (300 x 205mm), Venice, Giorgio Angelieri for heirs of Simone Galignani de Karera, 1590.⁂ A superb copy of this rare early atlas of the late sixteenth century, treating the world as a collection of islands. This edition contains seventeen additional maps, mostly of the islands of the Greek archipelago, which were introduced in the 1576 edition. Literature: Phillips, Atlases 3327.

Banking in Scotland.- [Law (John] Two Overtures Humbly Offered to His Grace John Duke of Argyll, Her Majesties High Commissioner, and the Right Honourable the Estates of Parliament. The 1. For supplying the present scarcity of coyn, and improving trade. The 2. For clearing the debts due by the Government to the Army and Civil List, 8pp., drop-head title, one or two page numbers shaved, untrimmed and sewn in modern paper wrappers [ESTC T178153; Goldsmiths-Kress 04226], sm. 4to (185 x 142mm.), [Edinburgh, no printer], [1705].⁂ Extremely rare pamphlet by John Law. In 1705, Law urged the establishment of a Scottish national bank and the issue of banknotes backed by gold or land. The proposals in the present pamphlet, and in his major work of the same year, Money and Trade Considered, were rejected, and Law left for France. After establishing the French Banque Générale in 1716, he went on to promote the Mississippi System which caused a financial crisis in France and his subsequent exile. This is, to our knowledge, the only known copy in private hands.

(T.) A Proper Reply to a Scandalous Libel, intituled The Trial of the Spirits, first edition, a little stained, cropped affecting pagination, modern half calf, [Kress 7444.], for J.Roberts, [1736] § Publick-House-Keeper's Monitor (The)..., third edition, slightly creased or frayed at corners, original wrappers, a little worn, later ink inscription to inside front wrapper, preserved in modern morocco-backed cloth drop-back boards, J.Downing, 1730, 8vo et infra (4)⁂ The first mentioned is a scarce work from a pamphlet war on the fashion of drinking toasts, especially to the memory of the dead. The second is a reflection on the gin craze of the time, the result of the government's encouragement of gin distillation in order to foster grain production in the late 17th century. The last two are rare with ESTC listing only 3 UK copies (BL, Cambridge, & National Library of Scotland) and 2 UK copies (BL, Magdalene College Cambridge) respectively.

Low Life.- [Legg (Thomas)] Low-Life: or One Half of the World, knows not how the Other Half Live, being a critical account of what is transacted by people...between Saturday-Night and Monday-Morning..., second edition, occasional soiling, later half calf, rubbed, rebacked preserving old gilt spine, for the Author, [?1755]; and 4 others on lewdness, cuckolds, bachelors and covetousness, 8vo et infra (5)⁂ Rare work portraying the low-life of London over a twenty-four hour period, inspired by Hogarth's Four Times of the Day series, completed in 1736. It features the debauched, gamblers, prostitutes, card sharps, quacks etc. in their hovels, taverns, prisons and streets. This is an expanded version of the first edition of 1752 and ESTC locates only 2 UK copies (BL and Trinity College Cambridge) with 2 more in America.

*** Please note, the description of this lot has changed.Drink.- Boydell (James) The Ullage Cask Gauger, comprised in a series of tables..., first edition, author's signature of authentication on Advertisement at end of Preface (as usual), with additional leaf 'To the Public' explaining the accuracy of the tables tipped in following Advertisement (small stain), title browned at margins, one or two spots, contemporary tree calf, gilt, rubbed, joints split, spine ends and corners worn, by R. and H.Causton...for the Author, 1784; and another on brewing, 8vo (2)⁂  Rare guide to calculating ullage, the airspace between wine and the top of its container (either cask or bottle), by a former wine merchant. This new guide for casks was intended for the wholesale wine trade, and was particularly useful for taking inventory and for controlling pillage. One section is specifically intended for use in the trade in whale oil, which due to the growth of the Arctic whaling industry in the 1750s was imported into England in increasing quantities. The work was later reprinted in the 19th century by Henry Kent Causton.ESTC lists only 6 copies in the UK (none in Oxford or Cambridge) and 4 others (3 in America).

Curiosa.- Dulaure (Jacques-Antoine) Pogonologia, or a Philosophical and Historical Essay on Beards, first edition in English, half-title, lightly browned, one or two corrections in ink, book-label of Thomas Preston, contemporary sheep, rubbed, corners worn, rebacked, Exeter, printed by R.Thorn, and London, T.Cadell, 1786 § Treatise (A) on the Custom of Counting Noses, first edition, title lightly soiled and with faint ink signature, ex-library copy with embossed stamp, later half calf, rubbed, rebacked, for M.Smith, 1779 § Modern Dissertation (A) on a Certain necessary Piece of Household Furniture, 16pp., only edition, title with woodcut ornament, modern panelled calf, spine faded, by H.Kent, 1752, 8vo (3)⁂ An interesting and amusing group of oddities, on beards, noses, and chamber pots. The first is a scarce satirical work on beards which until that time had long been out of fashion. The second, on noses, is one of two issues with variant imprints, both rare; ESTC records only one copy with this imprint (Dublin City Libraries). The third item, on chamber pots, has 4 locations in ESTC (BL, Guildhall, & Wellcome in UK, and another in Kansas).

Greindl, Monographie de Jacob Grimmer, 1972, no. 55 Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny, Jacob et Abel Grimmer: Catalogue Raisonné, Brussels 1991, no. 3Jacob Grimmer, born in Antwerp, was a contemporary of Peter Brueghel the Elder who clearly influenced this small but elegant landscape. Gillis Mostaert also had a marked influence on his oeuvre and most likely painted the figures in this panel. Most of Grimmer's works when signed and dated (which is rare) were painted between 1553 and 1588. This present composition, with the tower in the background, shows significant similarities to a signed and dated panel painted in 1583 in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (cat. rais. XXVII). Condition Report: The panel is cradled. Some discolouration of the varnish. Areas of fine craquelure, mainly in the foliage, but paint layer appears stable. A horizontal crack running from the edge of the panel through the foliage of the trees upper left. UV light reveals signs of retouching in scattered areas and in concentrated patches in the sky. A rare William III Britiannia Standard silver Chocolate pot by Anthony Nelme, London 1697, the cover with hinged finial over a conical base and scroll spout with hinged cover, engraved armorial decoration, fruitwood handle, height 25.5cm, weight 27 toz.The hallmarks are quite rubbed but still legible. The hinged lid has the Britannia standard mark inside. There is a minor dent to the body and a 5mm deep scratch under this. There doesn't appear to be any soldered repairs.

A rare set of four Georgian silver Hanoverian pattern sauce ladles, indistinct marks, the handle backs with engraved crest, weight 7 toz.The marks are either badly struck or worn off and are illegible. They have engraved armorials on the backs of the handles. Generally each are in good condition. Photos added of the marks and the armorials. The length of each ladle is 18cm.

A note advertising Post Coaches & Diligences, departing from the Cross Keys Inn, Wood Street, Cheapside, ‘with a guard’, ND (c. early 1800s), signature of B.W. Mountain, in the style of a £100 Bank of England note, with an engraving of Crossed Keys at top left, with an impressive list of destinations including Edinburgh ‘in four easy days’, Carlisle, Penrith, Whitehaven, Dumfries, Glasgow and Leeds among others, printed on thin paper, very good to about fine and rare Outing unlisted £150-£200 --- The Cross Keys is where Charles Dickens arrived in London when he was a child, and it was used in several of his novels. B.W.Mountain refers to Butler William Mountain, born in 1759. His father William was an innkeeper and the pair appear to have had a stake in several inns in London at this time. He is named in records as a ‘coach hirer’ from at least 1807 until his death in 1818. Several of his children continued his business and were still at the Saracens head in at least 1829. Birmingham Bank, No.31, Bull Street, an advertising note for ‘novelty & fashion’, promising to ‘cut any Lady or Gentleman’s Hair and make Ornamental Hair in a most Superior manner, also to keep for sale Foreign and British Perfumery of the best Qualities or forfeit the Sum of One Hundred Pounds’, 26 April 1924, serial number 31, signature of M. Elmore, a remarkable engraving of a the shop front at left, showing the building and window display in perfect and meticulous detail, very fine and very rare, one of the most beautiful skit notes the cataloguer has ever seen Outing unlisted £200-£260 --- Michael Elmore was a highly successful hairdresser who maintained these premises at Bull Street for almost 50 years. He was wealthy enough to keep several servants and had seven children, although he outlived four of them, retiring in 1855 and dying in 1860. His probate was valued at £5000, a very large sum of money. This note was engraved by Smith & Greaves in Birmingham to a very high standard. This partnership operated from at least 1820 until some time in the 1830’s, whereupon Greaves continued alone until the 1850’s. The standard of artistry, engraving and printing shown here is unusually high for a smaller printer of this period.

Bank of Enterprise, Sealfast Limited, an 1914 advertising note promising to ‘pay the user of Sealfast the sum of five pounds if he can prove same injures rubber’, serial number AI/OK 1914, signature of Leslie M. Lane and a vignette of a tin of the aforementioned Sealfast at top left, extremely fine and rare Outing unlisted £120-£160 --- Leslie Mathew Lane (1890-1948) seems to have been something of a travelling salesman who appears in court records a great many times throughout the first half of the 20th century. Most of his offences are related to driving, and include the accidental killing of a woman on the strand, for which he was not sentenced. Sealfast was only sold from May 1913 until September 1914 when Lane signed up to fight in the Royal Fusiliers, Kensington Battalion although he actually served in the Army Service Corp. It is unclear what Sealfast was, or whether it actually worked.

Pure Tobacco, Wolverhampton, an advertising note for £5, 4 July 1895, serial number 16, signature of Lizzie Marrian, promising to supply ‘Guaranteed Genuine Irish Twist of Superior Quality’, at the premises on 145 Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton, fine and rare, unusual to find a female proprietor listed on a note of this kind Outing unlisted £120-£160 --- Lizzie Marrian (nee Somerfield), born 1870, lived and worked at 145 Horseley Fields for much of her life. She had several children but it seems none survived. She married in 1892 but the couple separated and she died at Stafford County Asylum in 1910.
