A VERY RARE PRUSSIAN HUSSAR SABRE MADE FOR A BOY, mid-18th century, with leather covered wooden grip, brass stirrup hilt and curved 21in. single-edged blade, the forte engraved with stars and men-in-the-moon symbols, in its brass-mounted wooden scabbard, the scabbard mounts and hilt decorated with rococo scrolls and foliage (the back-strap and scabbard covering missing). Footnote: This two-thirds scale sabre may have been made for the son of a Hussar Officer in the Army of Frederick the Great or for a cadet at a military school. Its form is characteristic of sabres carried by Prussian Hussars in the Seven Years war and the rococo decoration is in keeping with Prussian court fashion. Frederick's place at Sans Souci was decorated in the high rococo style.

A RARE 20-BORE PERCUSSION HARPOON GUN, no visible maker's mark or serial number, with 20in. Birmingham black powder proof barrel with bolstered breech and bead foresight, round action with brass trigger-guard, retaining traces of original finish, 13 1/4in. figured stock including 3/4in. rubber recoil pad, in its canvas case with two brass barrel keys, Sykes patent powder flask, assorted percussion caps (one tin with spare nipples), a cloth bag of 'Eleys' Best Felt Wadding', nipple wrench and 3 harpoons; one solid brass tip, one with arrow-head tip and two fold-out barbs the third with sprung folding spear point. Footnote: The vendor informs us that the gun was originally purchased by the family from Hardy Bros. in Alnwick. The vendor informs us that his only experience of seeing the gun in action was in his youth, on a small yacht. As it resulted in the firer being thrown overboard by the unexpected recoil, it has remained unused ever since.

A RARE PAIR OF FRENCH 40-BORE FLINTLOCK TURN-OFF BARREL RIFLED HOLSTER PISTOLS BY THURAINE ET LE HOLLANDOIS A PARIS, third quarter of the 17th century, 21in. overall, each with three-stage barrel with slightly flared muzzle, the central section polygonal, engraved octagonal breech engraved 'TRULOCKE LONDINY', engraved tang, rounded engraved lock signed on the tail, each lock with part of the signature, figured stock with raised apron behind the barrel tang (one with some repairs, each with filled screw-hole in front of trigger-guard), and iron mounts including spurred pommel retaining traces of engraving (iron parts with some pitting and wear). Footnote: The filled screw-holes on the stocks were probably for a stirrup linking the barrel to the stock for reloading on horse back.

"PARADOX" FOSBERY PATENT', matt sight rib with open sights, bead foresight with flip-up moon-sight, rifled chokes (good), Jones patent rotary-underlever with engraving, carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action locks, elongated top-strap, border engraving, action engraved 'CHARGE 8 TO 10 DRAMS. 3 1/2 INCH CASE', retaining some original colour-hardening, 14 1/2in. pistolgrip stock with cheek-piece, horn pistolgrip-cap, sling swivels and 7/8in. rubber recoil pad, weight 15lb. 10oz. The concept of the 'Paradox' rifled choke was conceived by Colonel G. Vincent Fosbery, V.C., and was subsequently patented by Holland & Holland in 1885.

** A VERY RARE FOSBERY PATENT 'PARADOX' 12–BORE 'ROYAL EJECTOR' TOPLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED HAMMER EJECTOR SHOT-AND-BALL RIFLE BY HOLLAND & HOLLAND, serial no. 15889, 28in. nitro chopperlump barrels, tubes engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND STREET LONDON. "NITRO-PARADOX", matt sight rib with open leaf sights for 50, 100 and 150 yards, bead foresight, rib engraved 'MADE EXPRESSLY FOR WALTER LOCKE. CALCUTTA & LAHORE.' rifled chokes (good), 2 1/2in. chambers, carved percussion fences with side-clips, broad action with cut-away flats, stamped 'HOLLAND'S PATENT', removeable striker bars, rebounding back-action locks, elongated top-strap, best bold border and scroll engraving, the maker's name within a cartouche (some exterior pitting to locks and hammers), blued finish, 14 3/4in. semi-pistolgrip stock with horn buttplate, weight 8lb.4oz. The maker's have kindly confirmed that this Paradox was ordered on Tuesday 18th January 1910 (order no. 9369) as a double hammer ejector with a long top-strap, and half-pistolgrip stock. The order was placed by Mssrs Lancelot Dent & Co. 118 Cannon Street. E.C. (at the request of Walter Locke) and the gun was finished on 23rd July 1910 at a cost of 78 pounds and 9 shillings. It appears to be the last of just four examples made of its precise type, and the penultimate hammergun made by the Holland and Holland. Please note VAT at 17.5% is applicable on the hammer price and buyers premium.

A RARE 12-BORE 1889-PATENT 'W.P. JONES PATENT ADJUSTABLE TRY GUN', serial no. 16256, 28in. nitro barrels, tubes engraved 'W.P. JONES'S PATENT ADJUSTABLE TRY GUN. SPECIALLY MADE FOR S.W. MORGAN. FROM PURDEY'S.FIRBECK. NOTTS.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, treble-grip action with plain finish, floorplate engraved 'W.P. JONES PATENT ADJUSTABLE TRY GUN', retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, fully-articulated stock (with key) retaining much original finish, unchequered bolstered fore-end, weight 7lb. 4oz. Footnote: The gun was completed circa 1937. William Palmer Jones (Birmingham) is perhaps best known for his try-gun patent no. 1157 of 1889 and its subsequent improved patent no. 5372 of 1889. Whilst rudimentary try guns were in existence, Jones's patent was the first to provide comprehensive stock information and was later to become widely used amongst the gun trade as the most effective method of obtaining accurate measurements. Initially his patent was used exclusively under licence by Holland & Holland (London) and Trulock and Harris (Dublin) and with Jones himself holding the exclusive right to use the try gun in Birmingham.

Footnote: Approx. 250 'Superbritte' guns were produced by Etablissementes Britte between 1930 and 1936 (when the company ceased production). A later run of about two dozen were subsequently built by Britte S.A. when the company was taken over in 1949 by Louis Dessart, the grandson of Theophile Britte.

A rare pair of Svres white biscuit porcelain busts of the Comte DArtois (later Charles X of France) and his daughter in law the Duchesse de Berri each crisply modelled and raised on circular socle bases he with an impressed Svres mark and incised 29-Nov-SZ she inscribed Mas 14 x bu.SZ (Mas for Mascret). His plinth cracked and repaired. c.1816 38cm. (2) Jean Mascret was a sculpteur rŽpareur at Svres from 1810-1848. The Comte DArtois later Charles X King of France and Navarre was born at the palace of Versailles. He was the Grandson of Louis XV and the son of Louis dauphin de France who never reigned and his German wife Marie-Josephe of Saxony. He was crowned king of France in 1824 in the cathedral of Reims and reigned until the French revolution of 1830. He was the last king of the senior Bourbon line to reign over France. Marie-Caroline Bourbon the Duchesse de Berri was the daughter of Francois I King of the Two-Sicilies. She married Charles Duc de Berri (the second son of Charles X) who was assassinted by Louvel in 1820. At the time of the assassination she was pregnant with the Comte de Chambourd (Henri V) who was the last descendant of the ancient branch of the House of Bourbon.

RARE ROBERT 'MOUSEMAN' THOMPSON OAK READING CHAIR, c.1920-30, with adjustable back and loose cushioned seat flanked by flattened arms terminating in scrolls, the sides with open slats resting on arched stretchers connecting massive block feet, fitted with an adjustable reading slide, carved with a mouse, adzed throughout. NOTE: This early design has several unusual features including open slats, reminiscent of the work of contemporary avant garde designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright.

"A George III mahogany bracket clock, with repeat, the twin fusee movement with a verge escapement and striking on a bell, to an engraved backplate, the arched 'Battersea' enamel dial inscribed 'Marmke Storr, LONDON,' with subsidiary Strike/Silent dial, to painted decoration, the bell top case with a brass carrying handle, pierced fret sides, the base base moulding on pads, 20in (50.8cm) h, 11.5in (29.2cm) w,7.5in (19cm) d. Baillie states; Marmaduke Storr, Lombard Street, London, was active from 1724 - 1775. See Barder, Richard C.R. The Georgian Bracket Clock 1714 - 1830, for a similar example by James Upjohn. This rare enamel dial is thought to be the work of a former Battersea enamel worker, Anthony Tregent. Who on leaving the enamel factory set up his own business in Denmark Street. There are a handful of both longcase and bracket clocks with these type of dials. Anthony's brother, James was a well known London clockmaker."

A rare Third Reich Naval Landing Forces officer’s dirk, with plain plated blade, by Eickhorn, in its plated steel sheath, identical to the regular pattern naval dirk but with straight flat topped crosspiece with down turned ends, and with eagle and swastika on rectangular central panel. GC (sheath plating worn, some corrosion to pommel, grip wire lacking).
