[WORLD WAR I]: EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A fine autograph manuscript, unsigned, four pages, 4to and slightly smaller, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 1919). The boldly penned holograph manuscript, with a number of corrections, is the draft of a speech made by the Prince of Wales at a dinner in honour of Marshal Foch following the end of World War I and states, in part, 'This is an occasion of such unique & historical interest that I find it very difficult to address such a so distinguished an assembly. It is indeed a great honour for me to be presiding here this evening & that it should fall to my lot to propose such a wonderful toast; it is almost impossible for me to find adequate words……to welcome so many famous allied commanders…..At this dinner are gathered together, comrades in arms drawn from many nations…..who have been engaged in a long & desperate (sic) struggle against the most powerful military combination that the World has ever known & who have emerged from the struggle completely victorious……France & Paris have already celebrated peace & our overwhelming victory; the other allied nations & their capitals will doubtless do the same. But just now we are celebrating it all in the British & London way & I feel that yesterdays triumphal pageant was a brilliant success. We feel that it represented the great war, that it represented victory in every sense of the word & that no one who was present could fail to carry away but the proudest & most inspiring memories which will last a life time……To me as one of the younger generation these memories will be specia particularly vivid as during my periods of active service in several theatres of war I often had the priviledge (sic) & good fortune of being closely associated with many of our allied armies army corps divisions & even regiments…….It is obvious that this last greatest of world struggles has broken all records from every point of view but I would venture to point out that never before has so large a number of allies been fighting & working together…..Now that the great war is over & the powerful enemies that have so long disturbed the peace of the World & menaced our freedom are finally overthrown & subdued we all rejoice to welcome here those who have shared with us the perils & sufferings of the trying & strenuous campaign & who now share with us the joy of our victory. Representative of every allied power are present this evening but there is one power whose representative has occupied a unique position. In Marshall (sic) Foch we salute the great captain…..His position as a Supreme C. in C. has no comparison in history either from the point of view of power or responsibility. In this position he has revealed a genious (sic) for war equal to the greatness of his task & the magnitude of his difficulties'. Together with a further selection of holograph notes, unsigned, four pages, oblong 4to and 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 2019), being the Prince's briefer manuscript notes prepared in composing his speech, with various corrections and the different sections each marked with an ink and blue indelible pencil line, the notes concluding with a passage in French, 'C'est pour moi un tres grand honneur et tres grande joie de vous acceuillir ici au nom du Roi et de boire a la sante des grandes nations allies dont vous etes les representants distingues Je n'ai qu'une pensée ce soir “vive nos braves allies”' and his Toast to Foch, 'The Commanders & representatives of the armies forces of our allies coupled with the name of Marshall (sic) Foch'. A rare manuscript with interesting content. A few slight stains and minor age wear to the preparatory notes, the manuscript speech VG, 2  Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) French Marshal, a General and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander from March 1918.  The 'triumphal pageant' which the Prince of Wales describes as having taken place the day before in the present manuscript was undoubtedly the Victory Parade Peace Day held in London on 19th July 1919. Although fighting on the Western Front had ceased in November 1918, peace negotiations would continue for many months and the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 1919. When negotiations were reaching their conclusion and a 'proper peace' was within sight, a peace committee was founded to decide how Great Britain would publicly mark the end of World War I and acknowledge the widespread feelings of jubilation within the country.  With a Bank Holiday having been agreed upon, on the morning of the 19th July thousands of people gathered in London to participate in a spectacle, the likes of which had not been witnessed before. Almost 15,000 troops participated in the victory parade which was led by the Allied commanders Douglas Haig (British Commander-in-Chief), John Pershing (Head of the United States Expeditionary Force) and Ferdinand Foch (Allied Supreme Commander). The latter received the honour of being created a Field Marshal in the British Army on the same day and, on 20th July 1919, was the guest of honour at a dinner for the British and Allied Commanders and their staffs at the Carlton Hotel. It was at this dinner, attended by around 400 people, that the Prince delivered his speech. It was published in The Times on 21st July 1919. A monument to those killed and wounded, designed by Edwin Lutyens, was unveiled in Whitehall to mark the end of the victory parade. Although it was a temporary construction, another made from Portland stone and designed by Lutyens was to replace it in 1920 and, known as the Cenotaph, still stands today.

The address was well received in the United States and Allied nations and even by Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin, as a landmark of enlightenment in international relations. Wilson subsequently used the Fourteen Points as the basis for negotiating the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the war and became effective on 10th January 1920. Provenance: The present signatures were obtained by the French aviator Amedee de Flers (b.1885) who saw service during World War I.

‘Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program…..to bring you a special bulletin….’Original script from the historic 1938 radio broadcast of War of the Worlds WAR OF THE WORLDS: [WELLES ORSON]: (1915-1985) American Actor & Film Director, Academy Award winner. An exceptionally rare original 4to mimeographed production script (unsigned) for the historic radio broadcast of War of the Worlds, directed and narrated by Orson Welles, and performed and broadcast live as an episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air in New York on Sunday, 30th October 1938, over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The title page of the script (marked 7 in the upper right corner) lists the cast of characters, including [Professor Richard] Pierson (Orson Welles) and comprises 39 numbered pages, printed on the recto only, the text beginning with the premise that the audience had tuned into listen to a live performance of music by Ramon Raquello and his Orchestra, which at increasingly frequent intervals were interrupted by 'news flashes', the third page featuring the famous announcement, 'Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the Intercontinental Radio News. At twenty minutes before eight, central time, Professor Farrell of the Mount Jennings Observatory, Chicago, Illinois, reports observing several explosions of incandescent gas, occurring at regular intervals on the planet Mars….The spectroscope indicates the gas to be hydrogen and moving towards the earth with enormous velocity. Professor Pierson of the observatory at Princeton confirms Farrell's observation, and describes the phenomenon as (QUOTE) like a jet of blue flame shot from a gun (UNQUOTE)…..' , the announcer later broadcasting 'a special announcement', 'It is reported that at 8.50 p.m. a huge, flaming object, believed to be a meteorite, fell on a farm in the neighbourhood of Grovers Mill, New Jersey, twenty-two miles from Trenton. The flash in the sky was visible within a radius of several hundred miles….', leading to the broadcast becoming an ever more realistic unfolding account of technically advanced Martian forces invading Earth, and reaching a frightening climax as Carl Phillips, a reporter who has ventured out to Grovers Mill, provides the listeners with an eye-witness account of events, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the most terrifying thing I have ever witnessed…Wait a minute! Someone's crawling out of the hollow top. Someone or…..something. I can see peering out of that black hole two luminous disks…..are they eyes? It might be a face. It might be….[SHOUT OF AWE FROM THE CROWD] Good heavens, something's wriggling out of the shadow like a grey snake. Now it's another one, and another. They look like tentacles to me. There, I can see the thing's body. It's large as a bear and it glistens like wet weather. But that face. It….it's indescribable. I can hardly force myself to keep looking at it. The eyes are black and gleam like a serpent. The mouth is V-shaped with saliva dripping from its rimless lips that seem to quiver and pulsate. The monster or whatever it is can hardly move…..This is the most extraordinary experience. I can't find words…..' An outstanding document relating to one of the most famous broadcasts from the golden age of radio. A couple of the pages have small pencil annotations and an erotic pencil drawing initialled by an unknown individual appears to the verso of page eight. Bound with three brass paper fasteners to the left edge and with some light overall age wear, VG   Intended as a special Halloween episode from The Mercury Theatre on the Air, on the evening of Sunday, 30th October 1938, Orson Welles directed, narrated and performed in a riveting adaptation of the science fiction novel The War of the Worlds (1898) by H. G. Wells. The programme lasted precisely one hour and the episode became famous for the national uproar and panic it caused amongst the audience, resulting in a landmark change to broadcasting practices, and firmly cementing Welles's fame as a dramatist. The broadcast was reported as headline news in The New York Times the following day ('Radio Listeners in Panic, Taking War Drama as Fact') and such was the reaction of the public in the immediate aftermath of the broadcast the Federal Government were provoked into taking measures to ensure that no such broadcast ever aired again, without making it absolutely clear that the performance was a work of fiction. In the fracas that followed the broadcast, it was reported that the police raided the studio, Welles's collaborator John Houseman writing of the event, 'The following hours were a nightmare. The building was suddenly full of people and dark-blue uniforms. Hustled out of the studio, we were locked into a small back office on another floor. Here we sat incommunicado while network employees were busily collecting, destroying, or locking up all scripts and records of the broadcast'. It is believed that, during the course of their investigation, the police seized all available copies of the script. It is likely that only a small number - perhaps 20 or 30 - of the scripts were originally printed, for the actors and radio technicians, and with the majority of these confiscated by the police, the present lot represents an extremely rare opportunity to acquire an original copy pertaining to one of the most notorious broadcasts in the history of radio. Our research indicates that only five other copies of scripts have appeared at auction before now, the first being sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 14th December 1988 (Lot 189, $143,000). Two of the five were working drafts of 9 & 17 pages only, and one a transcript issued after the recording.

An important signed script from one of Hitchcock’s ‘five best films’ STRANGERS ON A TRAIN: HITCHCOCK ALFRED: (1899-1980) British Film Director, Academy Award winner. An exceptional original multiple signed Final screenplay and shooting schedule for Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological thriller film noir Strangers on a Train (1951), signed by Alfred Hitchcock in bold black fountain pen ink to the head of a preliminary page entitled Cast of Characters, also adding his famous profile caricature in his hand alongside his signature, further signed by several cast members comprising Farley Granger (Guy Haines), Laura Elliott (Miriam Joyce Haines) and Patricia Hitchcock (Barbara Morton; interestingly listed as Barbara Burton in the script). The mimeographed screenplay, dated 18th October 1950, comprises 153 numbered pages, printed on the recto only, and also includes numerous instructions for shots etc., some of the scenes marked ‘Already Shot’, with approximately eight differently coloured pages interspersed throughout, dated between November and December 1950, indicating various changes that were made during the shooting of the film. The verso of the final page of the screenplay features a pencil sketch of a pair of adjoining bedrooms, exactly matching the layout of Bruno and his mother’s house where he receives a visit from Guy Haines. The shooting schedule comprises 116 numbered pages, the first dated 29th September 1950, again printed to the recto only, providing extensive details of locations, timings of shooting (day or night), cast and wardrobe changes, scene numbers and short resumes of action, essential props (‘Lighter, Money…..handkerchief….Police protection’, ‘Tennis Rackets’, ‘Carnival setup’, ‘Merry-Go-Round’ etc.), with various annotations in an unidentified hand (‘Now out’, ‘Budget meeting 10/2’ etc.). The whole bound with two brass paper fasteners and with the original blue paper front cover (the lower part torn away and with tape stains to the edges) and with the original title page (similarly torn to the base) annotated ‘Hitchcock’ in pencil to the upper right corner. Contained within a plain black cloth clamshell box. A rare and important document relating not only to Hitchcock, the ‘Master of Suspense’ and one of the most influential film directors in the history of cinema, but also to the career of the American-British novelist and screenwriter Raymond Chandler. Some expectant light overall age wear, G Strangers on a Train was produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock and is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name. Starring Farley Granger, Ruth Roman and Robert Walker, the film also feature appearances by Leo G. Carroll, Patricia Hitchcock (the director’s daughter) and Laura Elliott (later known as Kasey Rogers). The film’s story concerns two strangers who meet on a train, a young tennis player and a charming psychopath, the latter suggesting that as they both want to ‘get rid’ of someone they should ‘exchange’ murders, and that way neither will be caught. The psychopath commits the first murder and then tries to force the tennis player to complete the bargain. Having secured the rights to Patricia Highsmith’s novel (her first) for $7500, Hitchcock proceeded to find a suitable screenwriter, but was turned down by a number of writers including John Steinbeck, Thornton Wilder and Dashiell Hammett. The director then turned to Raymond Chandler, who had earned an Oscar nomination for his first screenplay, Double Indemnity. Chandler took the job despite his opinion that it was ‘a silly little story’, however the writer was a notoriously difficult collaborator and his relationship with Hitchcock deteriorated rapidly, with Chandler becoming openly combative towards Hitchcock. Chandler completed a first draft, then wrote a second, without receiving any response from Hitchcock. When Chandler finally heard from the director in late September 1950, it was to notify him of his dismissal from the project.  However, much later, and nearer the release of the film, there was to be one point of agreement between Chandler and Hitchcock: they both acknowledged that since virtually none of Chandler’s work remained in the final script, his name should be removed from the credits. Hitchcock preferred the writing credit of Whitfield Cook and Czenzi Ormonde, but Warner Bros. wanted the prestige of the Chandler name and insisted that it remain. Hitchcock, accompanied by cast and crew, filmed on the East Coast of America from 17th October 1950, shooting at Penn Station in New York City, the railroad station at Danbury, Connecticut, and in various locations around Washington D.C. At the end of the month they were back in California, and the present script would appear to date from this time, with much of the rest of the shooting taking place on the soundstages at Warner Bros., including many seemingly exterior and on-location shots that were actually done inside in front of rear-projection screens.  Strangers on a Train marked something of a renaissance for Hitchcock, after several years of low enthusiasm for his late-1940s output, and the film has been described by some critics as one of Hitchcock’s five best films.
