A RARE JAPANESE WATER DROPPER SHAPED AS A SHISHI 17TH/18TH CENTURY The mythical beast seated on its haunches, its scrolling mane and bushy tail highlighted in blue enamels and with the tip of the ears in red, 13.5cm. A RARE JAPANESE KAKIEMON WATER DROPPER SHAPED AS A BOY C.1680 The smiling youth depicted seated on a drum, holding the tasselled cords of a double gourd slung over his shoulder, decorated in iron red, blue, green and black, the flat base with gauze marks, 14.4cm. For other examples of Kakiemon water droppers shaped as boys, see The Avery Brundage Collection at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, no. B69P30. Also, the Burghley House Collection, ref. CER0300 for two other models listed in the 1688 Inventory, one with comparable decoration.
A RARE JAPANESE IMARI FIGURE OF A RECLINING BIJIN C. 1700 Painted in coloured enamels and gilt, the beauty rests on one hand whilst holding a vase in the other, her kimono decorated with quatrefoil patterns, stylised birds and paulownia leaves reminiscent of the Imperial crest, 24cm. See B Davies, Barry Davies Oriental Art, Ko-Imari Porcelain from the Collection of Oliver Impey, p.202 fig.120 for a similar figure holding a candlestick. Jacob and Leban: A Circa 1740 European Fan, the double paper leaf painted in gouache with gold highlights to the border, the sticks plain with the addition of mother-of-pearl thumb guards, the gorge sticks with wide shoulders. A rare depiction of Jacob, accompanied by his wives Leah and Rachel, admonishing Leban for having first tricked him into marrying not Rachel but Leah. The scene includes a very bemused goat, his bi-colour coat being relevant to the story. The verso is very simple with a top border, and wavy gold lines. Guard length 27cmGenerally in good order, one split to the leaf near to left guard noted.
