A RARE PAIR OF CARVED & PAINTED STORY-TELLING PADDLES BY VALE OF CLWYD TOYS circa 1915, depicting a lady in Welsh hat and shawl with umbrella in the wind and depicting the 'Ladies of Llangollen', both carved within flat plywood roundels and with separate handles, stamped verso 'Vale of Clwyd Toys', 23.5cms diam Provenance: Carmarthen area, has been in the possession of the same Welsh family for several decades, please see https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4243087/4243089 (National Library of Wales) Auctioneer's Note: made by the Vale of Clwyd Toy Factory in Trefnant which began as a cottage industry in 1909 by Mary Heaton, providing employment and interest to working men in the evening. She was then able to recruit by means of a County Technical Committee grant, the help of Edward Jones, the local wood carver of Trefnant, joining the project as a teacher. They then began to sell toys and the profits were shared amongst the workers. From then Mary Heaton developed the project further, extending the classes and opportunity to unemployed men who had been incapacitated from ill-health and from other causes including wounded World War 1 soldiers. The toys were sold in several outlets around Wales and in England, they were also exported to Patagonia and other regions of the world including through agents in Buenos Ayres. Condition Report: in remarkably good condition, a small split in one but both stable and solid, no other cracks chips or significant staining and with very fresh paint work, lovely rare examples of ethical Welsh toys with an interesting social history relating to Denbighshire

The box is undated but most likely derives from 1812 the year of the King's jubilee, 4 3/8'' long x 2 5'8'' wide

An exceptionally rare Victorian novelty silver claret jug, marked for Sampson Mordan, London 1882, realistically modelled as Punch and Judy's dog 'Toby', with fur effect chasing and amber-coloured eyes (one possibly replaced), the head hinging open at the neck and snout, 23.1cm high, weight 34.04ozt CONDITION REPORT: Overall condition is good. As noted, one of the eyes is suspected to be a later replacement - please see the additional images noting the different finishes on the reverse of each eye. The pin in the hinge of the muzzle is present, but is loose and freely moves back and forth when nudged. As a result, the muzzle does wobble. The muzzle does not sit flush to the lower jaw. The hinge to the reverse of the ruff is in good order, however does seem a little crude and may have repaired or reinforced at some stage. The cover itself opens smoothly, however the top of the ruff does not sit flushly on the lower section of ruff (see the additional images of this). There appear to be some minor areas of creasing to the inside of the ruff, when the cover is lifted. There is some tarnishing to the gilt interior of the head, particularly at the contact points between the ruff and the neck. The monarch's mark, date letter lion passant and city crest are clear to the exterior body and the inside of the head, but both maker's marks are a little more worn. The condition of the exterior body is good, with an overall ‘pewter’ lustre. Some general scratching consistent with age and light use. There are some relatively heavy scratches to the base around the feet and tail (when the piece is viewed upside down) consistent with age. Umrahmt von einer Mandorla, die mit Blumen und Blättern auf einem doppelten Lotussockel verziert ist, die Seite mit einem gravierten Sechs-Zeichen Qianlong-Marke versehen, die Innenseite des Deckblatts mit einer weiteren eingravierten, sechsstelligen Marke auf der Rückseite und der Mandschu-Inschrift auf der Rückseite, die Außenseite mit einem Doppelschlaufengriff versehen. However overall a very beautiful copy, for a reference book in excellent condition.

Andreas Schoppe (Lebenstedt 1538 - 1614 Wernigerode) wurde nach seinem Studium an der Universität Wittenberg Lateinschullehrer am Martineum in Braunschweig. Nach weiteren Studien in Rostock wurde er 1562 als zweiter Schulrektor nach Güstrow berufen, 1568 Pfarrer sowie Verwalter der Alvenslebenschen Bibliothek in Erxleben und folgte 1589 einem Ruf als Pfarrer, Schulaufseher und Lateinlehrer nach Wernigerode. Neben theologischen Schriften hatte er eine Chronik der Stadt Braunschweig verfasst, die nicht im Druck erschienen war. - Durchgehend moderat gebräunt. Einige Ecken mit Knickspuren. Andreas Schoppe (Lebenstedt 1538 - 1614 Wernigerode) became a Latin teacher at the Martineum in Braunschweig after his studies at the University of Wittenberg. After further studies in Rostock, he was appointed second headmaster in Güstrow in 1562, pastor and administrator of the Alvensleben library in Erxleben in 1568, and moved to Wernigerode in 1589 in order to operate as pastor, school supervisor and Latin teacher. In addition to theological writings, he had written a chronicle of the city of Braunschweig, which had not appeared in print. - New cardboard. - Moderately browned throughout. Als Mediziner leistete er Bedeutendes auf dem Gebiete der vergleichenden Anatomie war er nach Blumenbach der erste, der in Deutschland die vergleichende Anatomie als selbständige Disziplin verwandte und der erste speziell für dieses Fach sich habilitierende Universitäslehrer. Important atlas, which completes the "Grundzüge einer neuen und wissenschaftlich begründeten Cranioscopie (Schädellehre)" published 1841. Carl Gustav Carus (1789 - 1869) was a physician, naturalist and philosopher and one of the main representatives of romantic thinking. As a physician, he made important contributions in the field of comparative anatomy. After Blumenbach, he was the first in Germany to use comparative anatomy as an independent discipline and the first university teacher to habilitate specifically for this subject. Die schönen meist doppelseitigen Tafeln zeigen topographische Ansichten von Palästen, buddhistischen Klöstern, Szenen des aristokratischen Lebens, Gelehrte, Händler in Osaka, das Leben im Hafen von Sakai und das des gemeinen Volkes. Zu den interessantesten Illustrationen gehören ein Taifun, ein Tsunami und eine Theateraufführung, die von drei niederländischen Personen auf dem Weg nach Edo (jetzt Tokyo) besucht wurde. Von 1640 bis 1860 war Japan für Ausländer verboten. Nur die niederländischen Handelsdelegationen, die in Nagasaki wohnten, wurden toleriert und einmal im Jahr nach Edo eingeladen, um dem Shògun Geschenke zu präsentieren. - Schönes Exemplar, mit rotem Besitz-Stempel. Among the most interesting illustrations are a typhoon, cherry blossoms, a tsunami, or a theatrical performance attended by three Dutch characters on their way to Edo (now Tokyo). From 1640 to 1860, Japan was forbidden to foreigners. Only the Dutch trade delegations staying in Nagasaki were tolerated and invited once a year to Edo to present gifts to the Shògun. - Very nice copy. Red owner stamp. The back seams were renewed. Der deutsche Theologe und Mineraloge Johann Georg Lenz (1748 - 1832) ging 1765 an die Universität Jena und promovierte 1770 zum Doktor der Philosophie und Theologie. Er wurde Privatdozent an der Fakultät der Philosophischen Fakultät. Eine Zeitlang setzte er seine theologischen Studien fort, interessierte sich aber schließlich für wissenschaftliche Studien, insbesondere für die Mineralogie. Das Studium der Mineralien eignete sich für Lenz, und das neu erfundene System von A. G. Werner eröffnete ihm neue Welten der Entdeckung. Lenz entschied sich für eine Karriere auf diesem Gebiet, und so wurde er Professor für Bergbau und Mineralogie an der Universität Jena. Als die Universität die Mineraliensammlung von J. E. I. Walch erwarb, wurde Lenz zu ihrem Kurator ernannt. Lenz war Gründungsmitglied und treibende Kraft hinter der "Societät für die gesammte Mineralogie" in Jena, die sich als erste Gesellschaft ausschließlich mineralogischen Studien widmete. The individual illustrations of the Mustertafeln are correspondingly numbered to descriptions in Lenz' Versuch einer vollständigen Anleitung: volume one describes the earth's, stones, salts, organic minerals and petrifications and volume two covers the metals and petrology. The German theologian and mineralogist Johann Georg Lenz (1748 - 1832) went to the University of Jena in 1765, receiving his Doctor of Philosophy and Theology in 1770. He became a private docent with in the faculty of the department of philosophy. He continued to pursue theological studies for a time, but eventually he became interested in scientific studies, especially mineralogy. The study of minerals suited Lenz, and the newly invented system of A. G. Werner, opened new worlds of discovery for him. Lenz choose to pursue a career in the field, and consequently, he was made a professor of mining and mineralogy at the University of Jena. When the University acquired J. E. I. Walch's mineral collection, Lenz was made its curator. He then started publishing his manual of plants in 1818. Richard Rudolph described Iwasaki in a paper for the University of Kansas as a botanist presenting specimen artistically. Es handelt sich dabei eigentlich um "die Arbeit des Missionars Basile de Glemona, welche Guignes auf Befehl ungeändert herausgegeben und aus der alphabetischen Ordnung in eine Ordnung nach den Zeichen bringen musste. Er durfte bloß einige Zusätze beifügen" (Ebert). Guignes war 1794-95 als Übersetzer für den niederländischen Botschafter am Hof des Kaisers Qianlong tätig. Sein Werk ist eine gründliche Bearbeitung der Zusammenstellung, die der Franziskaner-Missionar Basilio de Gemona Brollo im 17. Jahrhundert erarbeite. Die zehntausenden chinesischen Schriftzeichen sind aus Birnbaumholzblöcken gedruckt, die zwischen 1715 und 1740 für ein Projekt des jungen chinesischen Abenteurers Arcadio Huan geschnitzt wurden. Der Franziskaner Basile de Gemona (1648-1704) verfasste in den Jahren 1694 und 1699 seine mehr als tausend Seiten umfassende Ausgabe, in der er zwischen 7000 und 9000 Ideogramme beschreibt und übersetzt. Er schuf damit das grundlegende Werk überhaupt. Mehrere Versuche einer Veröffentlichung scheiterten auf Grund der hohen Herstellungskosten. Erst zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts vergab die französische Regierung an den im chinesischen Canton stationierten französischen Gesandten Chrétien Louis Joseph de Guignes (1759-1845) den Auftrag. Gastl for the Russian Tsar. The splendid OLithographs show inside an architect. They show emblematic pictures like the crowned eagle of the Russian emperor triumphing over evil, snakes and accompanied by female personifications of peace, trade and wisdom, a tinted and hand-coloured dedication sheet with a view of St. Petersburg in the background and a bust of Tsar Nicholas in the foreground etc. The pictures probably made by F(ranz) Kollarz (1829-1894) and the lithographer Josef Hasslwander. - Some of them a little bit brownish, especially at the white margins, the chromatic plates nearly without any stains and with a splendid colouring. Overall still a good copy inside.

Der spanische Offizier Domingo Badía y Leblich (1767-1818) reiste unter dem Namen Ali-Bey durch Nordafrika mit der Absicht, die Beduinen Stämme zum Aufstand gegen den Sultan und zur Eroberung Marokkos anzustacheln. Er ist bekannt als der dritte Europäer, der nach Ludovico di Varthema und Joseph Pitts Zugang zu Mekka erhielt, und als der erste, der als Augenzeuge von den Wahhabiten in Mekka berichtete. Seine Reise nach Arabien, die 1803 begann, wurde vom Premierminister Karls IV., Manuel Godoy, als Agent des spanischen Kolonialismus in Auftrag gegeben. Um unbemerkt zu bleiben, ließ er sich beschneiden, gab sich als abbasidischer Prinz aus und verhielt sich wie ein muslimischer Gläubiger, der behauptete, in Europa studiert zu haben, um seinen Mangel an arabischen Sprachkenntnissen zu rechtfertigen. Er verbrachte zwei Jahre in Marokko, reiste dann nach Tripolis, Zypern und Ägypten, besuchte Mekka und machte auf dem Rückweg in Jerusalem, prominenten Orten in Syrien und schließlich in Konstantinopel Station. Nach mehr als zwei Jahren scheiterte seine Mission, und er musste Marokko verlassen. Anstatt nach Europa zurückzukehren, setzte er seine Reise nach Ägypten fort, wo er Chateaubriand traf, dann nach Zypern reiste, bevor er 1807 nach Mekka pilgerte und über Jerusalem, Damaskus und Konstantinopel nach Spanien zurückkehrte. Er war einer der ersten Christen, der eine detaillierte und illustrierte Beschreibung von Mekka und der Omar-Moschee in Jerusalem sowie weiterer Aspekte des Islam anfertigte. Neben seinen nützlichen naturwissenschaftlichen Beobachtungen leistete auf dem Gebiete der Kartographie hervorragendes und zeichnete ständig Landschaften, Stadtpläne, Gebäude und Ruinen, "die z.T. die ersten waren, die zur Kenntnis des Abendlandes gelangten" (Henze). Der Atlas zeigt prachtvolle Ansichten von Zypern, Marokko, Nordafrika, Côte d'Arabie, El Cassaba oder Schloss Tanger. Ferner Grund- und Aufrisse von Moscheen und Gebäuden, Epigraphik, Oasen, Schlösser und Gebäuden, sowie Fauna und Tiere. - Beim Textband 1 fehlt das Frontispiz, die Karten des vollständigen Atlasbandes meist sauber, nur zum Ende hin teils im Außenrand und verso etwas braunfleckig. - Mit dem meist inkompletten Atlasband sehr selten. Atlas volume and 2 (v.3) text vols. - The Spanish officer Domingo Badía y Leblich (1767-1818) travelled through North Africa under the name Ali-Bey with the intention of inciting the Bedouin tribes to revolt against the Sultan and to conquer Morocco. He is known as the third European to gain access to Mecca, after Ludovico di Varthema and Joseph Pitts, and as the first eyewitness to the Wahhabis in Mecca. His journey to Arabia, which began in 1803, was commissioned by the Prime Minister of Charles IV, Manuel Godoy, as an agent of Spanish colonialism. To go unnoticed, he had himself circumcised, pretended to be an Abbasid prince and behaved like a Muslim believer who claimed to have studied in Europe to justify his lack of knowledge of Arabic. He spent two years in Morocco, then travelled to Tripoli, Cyprus and Egypt, visited Mecca and on his way back he stopped in Jerusalem, prominent places in Syria and finally in Constantinople. After more than two years his mission failed and he had to leave Morocco. Instead of returning to Europe, he continued his journey to Egypt, where he met Chateaubriand, then travelled to Cyprus, before making a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1807, returning to Spain via Jerusalem, Damascus and Constantinople. He was one of the first Christians to produce a detailed and illustrated description of Mecca, the Omar Mosque in Jerusalem and other aspects of Islam. The atlas shows magnificent views of Cyprus, Morocco, North Africa, Côte d'Arabie, El Cassaba or Tangier Castle. It also shows ground plans and elevations of mosques and buildings, epigraphs, oases, castles and buildings, as well as fauna and animals. - Text volume 1 lacks the frontispiece, the maps of the complete atlas volume mostly clean, only towards the end partly in the outer margin and at the back side somewhat brown-spotted. - Very rare with the mostly incomplete atlas volume.

Die eindrucksvollen Aquatinta-Tafeln (im Format ca. 10 x 12 cm) zeigen Ansichten von Dorpat (Tartu) in Estland, hierbei vor allem die Gebäude der 1632 gestifteten und 1802 erneuerten Universität Dorpat. Gezeigt werden Das Anatomicum, das Hauptgebäude (der Universität), die botanischen Gartenhäuser, das Clinicum, die Sternwarte, die Domkirchenruine (= Universitätsbibliothek) sowie das 1806 errichtete Monument zur Bestattung der Gebeine, die man um die ehemalige Marienkirche gefunden hatte. Das Album erfährt von Hausmann in den Sitzungsberichte der Gelehrten Estnischen Gesellschaft 1894. (Dorpat, 1895, S. 138-139) eine ausführliche Würdigung und Beschreibung: Das Exemplar "des selten gewordenen Heftes ... darf als die älteste Sammlung gelten, welche Abbildungen der Gebäude der damals noch jungen Universität in weitere Kreise gebracht hat." Darüber hinaus verweist er im Weiteren auch auf eine ähnliche Aquatinta Claras die das beliebte Gästehaus Quistenthal der Universität zeigt, aber keine Aufnahme in das Album fand. August Philipp Klara (1790 in Kaiavere-1850 in Sankt Petersburg) war ein estnischer Maler, Graveur und Kupferstecher. Klara studierte von 1811 bis 1815 an der Tartuer Universität (Kaiserliche Universität zu Dorpat) bei Karl August Senff. Nach Tätigkeit als Lehrer, zog er 1825 in die russische Hauptstadt Sankt Petersburg. Dort war er als Graveur und Kupferstecher am Hof des Zaren tätig. 1830/31 führten ihn Reisen nach München und Dresden. - Dabei: Originalzeichnung von A. Herrmann nach Clara. Das Clinicum, 7,8 x 12,3 cm, die sich auch in diesem Exemplar wiederfindet. - Die Aquatintenfolge nur am Rand stellenweise etwas braunfleckig, Erste drei Bll. mit dezenter Knickpur am rechten Rand, die Platten meist mit kraftvollen Plattenton. - Wichtiger deutschprachiger Beitrag zur Architekturgeschichte von Tartu. - Sehr selten. The impressive aquatint panels show views of Dorpat (Tartu) in Estonia, especially the buildings of the University of Dorpat, which was donated in 1632 and renovated in 1802. They show the Anatomicum, the main building (of the university), the botanical garden houses, the Clinicum, the observatory, the ruins of the cathedral (= university library) and the monument erected in 1806 to bury the bones found around the former Church of Our Lady. Hausmann gave the album a detailed appraisal and description in the reports of the meetings of the Estonian Scholars Society in 1894 (Dorpat, 1895, pp. 138-139): The copy "of the rare booklet ... may be considered the oldest collection that has brought images of the buildings of the then still young university into wider circles". Furthermore, he also refers to a similar aquatint Claras, which shows the popular Quistenthal Guest House of the university, but was not included in the album.
