Lot 92

A rare Dutch mid-18th century mahogany metamorphic wingback armchair or daybedThe arched top rail centred by a carved portrait medallion above a needlework upholstered back depicting the sacrificing of Isaac, with a hinged folding seat extending to a daybed, the arms becoming legs, 96cm wide x 80cm deep x 135cm high, (37 1/2in wide x 31in deep x 53in high) (un-extended)Footnotes:Provenance: Sotheby's, The Burgenstock Collection, Zurich, 10 December 1996, lot 260 A related pair of metamorphic armchairs were sold at Christie's New York, 15 October 2019, lot 282 where it was described as Anglo-Dutch. A related example, with slightly more elaborate carving, is in the collection of the late Count of Rechteren Limpurg at Rechteren Castle, Overijssel (A. Berendsen, Het Nederlandse Interieur, Utrecht, 1950, p. 218, fig. 230)Literature: Ralph Edwards illustrates a near identical metamorphic armchair at Padworth House, Berkshire, in his Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964, p. 269, fig. 14, dating it to the 1730s. However, the overall proportions and the distinctive, isolated carving of the toprail, indicates that this chair was more likely to have been made in Holland. Examples, of 'travelling chairs', often called 'reisstoelen' can be found in several old Dutch collections, which also suggests a Dutch rather than an English origin for this type of furniture.A near identical example to the present chair can be found in the Stichting Hannema-de Stuers Fundatie at Het Nijenhuis Castle, Overijssel, and is illustrated in A. van der Feltz, Kunstnijverheid Hannema-de Stuers Fundatie, Zwolle, 1980, p. 57, fig 123.Another closely related example is illustrated in C. de Jonge, Holländische Möbel und Raumkunst, The Hague, 1922, p. 218.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP Lots denoted with a 'TP' will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 70

This is a book and signed letter written by T E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia (1888 - 1935). Lawrence was a British military officer who led the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turkish empire in World War I and achieved great fame for his actions during the war. The book is titled Seven Pillars of Wisdom and is an autobiographical account of his experiences in the conflict. It is a second printing of the book (1935). After the war, Lawrence joined the Foreign Office, working with the British government and King Faisal to create an Arab state that would include Syria, Iraq, and other countries in the Middle East. Faisal was a leader of the revolt and had great respect for Lawrence. In 1922, Lawrence retreated from public life, and spent his remaining years as an enlisted man, mostly in the Royal Air Force, with a brief stint in the Army. The body of the letter reads “Dear Madam ... Jonathan Cape has duly sent me on your letter, which dates from last summer, I see. It is a very pleasant thing to come along, casually, and I am most grateful for the kindness you offer. Fortunately, there is no need of a refuge, other than this. Not that I regard the R.A.F. as a refuge. Flying, and the progress of flying, is a very great interest of mine - almost a profession, as the Catholics would have it - and the life and work I have led for the last ten years in our Air Force have been wholly delightful. Still, it was kindly of you to make that offer. Yours [ ly], T E Shaw”. “T E Shaw” was the name Lawrence adopted in the 1920‘s because he grew tired of his celebrity. He stopped working with the British government in 1922 and enlisted in the Royal Air Force under an assumed name (John Hume Ross), and when the press found out about it, the RAF was embarrassed and released him from service. Lawrence found it impossible to reenlist under his own name, so he signed up as a private with the Royal Tank Corps in 1923 under the name “T E Shaw”, which was probably taken from his friendship with George Bernard Shaw, the noted Irish playwright. Somehow Lawrence was able to enlist with the RAF again in 1925 by using this new name, and he legally adopted the name in 1927. The letter was sent from Mount Batten, the Royal Air Force base near Plymouth, England. You can see the address in the upper right corner. We are not sure who wrote the letter that prompted Lawrence to write this one, but the consignor found the letter in the book when she lived in New Jersey, and she believes whoever wrote the letter to Jonathan Cape was concerned about Lawrence’s sexual orientation, and that’s why the person offered him sanctuary. There has always been speculation about his sexual orientation - some people believe he was asexual, others claim he was homosexual, but this has never really been confirmed. He was also captured and tortured by the Turks during the war and historians believe he was raped by the Turks at this time. The Criminal Law Amendment, which was passed in England in 1885, also outlawed homosexual activity by men, and it is possible the person who wrote to Lawrence through Jonathan Cape was offering Lawrence shelter from criminal prosecution for his alleged orientation. We don’t know, but it would be nice to see what the other letter said. (Jonathan Cape was the publishing company in England that handled the book for Lawrence, and Herbert Jonathan Cape was the founder of the company, and we’re not sure if Lawrence received a letter from the publishing house or from the founder of the company. Lawrence might have known Herbert Jonathan Cape personally, but we can’t say for sure about that either.) The letter is clearly written in his hand and signed by him, and it is dated May 1, 1933, just two years before he died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. The letter is rare and adds to some of the historical record for Lawrence; there is very light foxing in a couple of spots. The frame is 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. wide and the letter is 8 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. wide.

100 – 300 AD. Gandharan. A rare grey schist figure of Atlas in a crouching position, with his hands braced against his knees, resting on a rectangular base. Atlas is depicted bare-chested, with a cloth garment draped around his waist. His hair, short beard and features have all been carefully modelled, underlining the high quality of this piece. Atlas is an important figure in Greek art and architecture, usually employed to support the pediment of a frieze, whether actual size or in miniature. Gandhara was an ancient region in the Peshawar basin in the north-west of the ancient Indian subcontinent. The Kushan period (c. 75-451 AD) of Gandharan art, to which this schist figure belongs, was the golden age of artistic production in the area. For further information on Gandharan art, see Jongeward, D. 2019, Buddhist Art Of Gandhara in the Ashmolean Museum. Oxford, Oxford University Press. Good condition; on a custom-made stand. Provenance: Property of a North London gentleman; previously acquire on the UK/European art market in the 1980s; Size: H:324mm / W:188mm (w/o stand); 4.7kg

100 – 300 AD. Gandharan. A rare Gandharan yellowish-grey schist panel depicting a drunken Hercules embracing a female companion. Both individuals are depicted with their richly-draped clothing falling away to reveal their naked bodies, and another figure can be seen to the right of the female companion, clutching at her gown as it falls. The figures are framed by a border of grapes and leaves, a symbol of drunkenness and the god Dionysus. The Greek hero Herakles/Hercules is famous for his acts of penance known as the Twelve Labours, but also for his uproarious drunkenness. This is a fantastic representation of a classical motif in the oriental style. Gandhara was an ancient region in the Peshawar basin in the north-west of the ancient Indian subcontinent. Gandharan art frequently incorporates elements of Greek classical mythology. The Kushan period (c. 75-451 AD) of Gandharan art, to which this schist panel belongs, was the golden age of artistic production in the area. For further information on Gandharan art, see Jongeward, D. 2019, Buddhist Art Of Gandhara in the Ashmolean Museum. Oxford, Oxford University Press. Good condition. C. 3rd millennium BC. Ancient Central Asia, Indus Valley. An excellent example of an Indus Valley civilisation bowl, with a truncated conical and flattened base. while the interior of the bowl features a border of black leaves surrounding a central rondel. This central rondel contains a female figure depicted in a hieratic pose (facing the viewer); she wears a carefully textured dress akin to a modern sari and special attention has been paid to her highly detailed shoulder-length hair, which is worn loose. To her left and right are short examples of the Indus Valley written script. The exterior is undecorated. The Indus Valley Civilisation was an important Bronze Age culture which arose in c. 3300 BC and lasted until c. 1300, though its heyday, to which this ceramic vessel belongs, was in the 3rd millennium BC. 1993 Toyota Century VG40Registration no. L763 LBEChassis no. V40-014042Odometer Reading: 40,000MoT Expiry: 01/01/2021*Seldom seen in the UK*Bodywork said to be very good*Engine said to be excellent for starting and runningThe Century has always been a Japanese market-only offering targeting royalty, politicians, and businessmen lucky enough to have a chauffeur rather than having to do their own driving. One of only five on UK roads, this 1993 VG40 model is said to have very good bodywork and good paintwork and trim – the vendor notes there is a slight indentation to the rear bumper and a minor touch-up to an offside door. The interior has vendor-ranked good seats (there is a minor cigarette burn to the front passenger seat cushion) while headlining, dashboard, carpets and door cards are said to be very good: the original lace seat and headrest covers are still fitted. Our vendor reports the engine to be excellent for starting and running and the underbonnet presentation is described as very good, but the bonnet strut is missing. The gearbox and suspension are said to be very good, the brakes and axles excellent. New brake lines (custom fabricated) and rear electronic air shock absorbers have been fitted, along with a custom-made pitman arm. The electrics are noted to be good but the vendor says replacement front door window gears are required, as is an air-conditioning belt and speed sensor. This model comes with factory fitted rear television and VHS cassette player, two detachable front wing flagpoles, and original sales and maintenance brochures. Never sold new in Europe this Century makes a rare and interesting luxury saloon.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 78/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
