1745 CULLODEN VICTORY TOKEN ISSUED AFTER THE BATTLE. Immediately after the Battle of Culloden in 1745 these medals were issued in London to commemorate the victory by The Duke of Cumberland over the Jacobite rebel army. Very rare to find this is in good condition with an image of the battle and a portrait of the Duke on the reverse. 180-240

NAPOLEONIC EAGLE COMMUNION PIECE 15 inches tall. A very rare French Imperial Eagle made from wood , dating from the first Empire. An identical eagle is on display in Paris at The Hotel des Invalides Military Museum, these were part of a chaplain’s communion set. The full set comprised a chalice and paten which together with the eagle, once the wings were lifted off fitted into a custom made case. This particular example has detachable wings as does the Paris piece. It was purchased in the Crimea last year and comes mounted on a period base decorated with a First Empire cap badge and an engraved plate in Russian script. This was most likely to have been left in Russia following Napoleon’s failed invasion, it was formerly on display in a private museum in Sevastopol. 800-1200

EARLY C14th HAND GONNE . A very rare early form of hand gonne or hand gun dating from the mid C14th. Made from cast bronze it measures 25 inches in length and is in exactly as excavated condition. The touch hole is plain rather than recessed which indicates an early date; the early type were fired with a hot wire whereas later types had a recess for a small amount of gunpowder. The item is untouched since excavation save a small mark on the side where the finder has scratched it with a point, very rare item, it was found in Croatia and along with lot 212 has been in a private collection for 10+ years.2000-2500

1641 INSCRIBED SHIP’S SOUNDING WEIGHT. A rare lead sounding weight used when attached to a rope to establish the depth of water around a ship. The lead weight measures @ 1 5/8 inches tall with a diameter of @ 1 ¼ inches and is cast around an iron loop of which some remains intact. Unusually the weight has an inscription covering the outer surface, “ SINK YE WELL AND TRUTH DO TELL 1641”. A very scarce C17th maritime item formerly part of the Clive Sherwood Collection Worcestershire. 180-240

A rare early Paris example. Note: Alexander Mann was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 22 January 1853. He died in London on 26 January 1908. He is buried in Blewbury Church, Oxfordshire.The second son of James Mann, merchant and collector, he took drawing lessons from the age of ten with Robert Greenlees (1820-94) and then attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art, where Greenlees was headmaster. In 1877 he went to Paris and enrolled at the Académie Julian, and then studied under Mihály Munkácsy and from 1881 to 1885 under Carolus-Duran. From 1883-93 Mann exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Fine Art Society, New Gallery, Ridley Art Club, New English Art Club and Society of British Artists, a society that appointed James McNeill Whistler its President in 1886. At the same year he was invited to become the first Scottish member of the New English Art Club and was later joined by several of his friends, notably John Lavery, Thomas Millie Dow of the Glasgow Boys and Norman Garstin

A very interesting and rare flintlock pistol in roman style dating: 17th Century provenance: Central Italy Long, smooth, round, 11 mm cal. barrel with square base and rib signed "GIACOM ZAMBONET", the base engraved with trophies and decorated with chiselled rings, the nozzle with brass moulded muzzle; on the tang the effigy of a man with helmet and sword in brass. Roman style flintlock with beautiful engravings and chiselling, at the end a high-relieved mask, another one on the batterie, at the inside surface of the plate the monogram "P.R.". Fine, wooden stock with peculiar, brass mounts featuring bas -and high-relived decorations; the counter-plate pierced with mythical animals, the trigger guard with the effigy of a bearded man with a flower on the forehead, under the barrel the effigy of a figure holding a face; butt-plate with large mask, the back with a face and mythical figures with mask and feathers. Brass-tipped wooden ramrod with iron cartridge extractor. Iron belt hook. dimensions: length 49.5 cm.

A rare percussion pistol by Bruera dating: second quarter of the 19th Century provenance: Torino Smooth, octagonal, 16.5 mm cal. barrel, decorated with silver bands at the edges (gilt bands at the base) and a row of short fullers, the corners with fluted decorations, the back with a white metallic cartouche featuring the signature "Bruera a Torino"; at the lower parts the seat for the ramrod (missing), the breech chiselled with floral motifs. Interesting mechanic inside the butt, with rear hammer slightly off-centre and provided at the base with a plaque chiselled with racemes. Wooden grip finely chiselled with net pattern enclosing flowers with iron buttons (some missing), butt-plate with a ring for the strap, iron trigger guard chiselled en suite with the other mounts. A rare horseman's knife combined with percussion pistol dating: mid-19th Century provenance: Europe Straight, single -and false-edged, folding blade, marked "VAGNETTI" on the tang; iron body with horn grip scales held by screws. Provided with a screwdriver on the back, a screw-shaped tip for wood and a long, beak-shaped tool to clean the horse hoofs. At the back of the grip the cylindrical, 10 mm cal. barrel, with vent, hammer with rear cocking lever, cylindrical, decorated with a small pierce of checkered amber. In order to use the gun it is necessary to extract the cleaning tool, as it works as the grip, and the tip that works as the trigger. Interesting and scarce piece, see another one with similar mechanic in "Firearms Curiosa" by Lewis Winant, on pages 130-132 (picture at the bottom of page 132). dimensions: length aperto 24,6 cm.

Iron frame engraved with racemes; checkered, wooden grip with engraved butt and primer case. Double action mechanic. Serial number "1xxx". Remains of antique finishing. Henri Mangeot (1807? - 1877) was inventor and manufacturer of arms, he was Belgian with French origins, and used to be a famous gunsmith at the Court of Brussels, he was member of science academies, author of books about fire arms, and winners of several awards. dimensions: length 30,5 cm.

A rare and interesting Dumonthier dagger combined with double-barrelled pistol dating: third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: France Strong, straight, double-edged blade of lenticular section, with a thin, central fuller on almost the entire length, on a side of the blade the mark "DUMONTHIER / BREVETE D.on / A MOUDAN", provided with a muzzle-loading barrel on each side, with smooth bore and 10 mm caliber; iron quillon, the parry arms consist in the hammers and hide the nipples, when lifted they automatically extract the two foldaway triggers placed within the grip. Thick, brass grip scales, worked with twisted grooves, curved pommel with a fine, bas-relieved trophy of arms on dotted ground; also provided with a small loop at the edge. Complete with the wooden scabbard with brown leather covering (slightly damaged), with a seat both for the blade and the barrels; provided with brass mounts, cap with small hook. dimensions: length 50 cm.

A rare dagger commemorating the kings of France Henry III and Charles IX dating: circa 1800 provenance: France Simple, straight, double-edged blade of lozenge section; ivory hilt finely chiselled with floral motifs, wooden grip with velvet covering (worn); scabbard in two pieces, the front one made of ivory, divided in three sections, the upper one finely carved with the effigy of king Henry III (kingdom 1574-1589) and king Charles IX (kingdom 1560-1574), who also was king of Poland (1573-1574); between them the crowned, French coat of arms depicting the lilies; at the centre the effigy of an angel and two gooses between floral bands; the lower part, corresponding to the chape with a mask; the back surface made of wood covered with velvet. dimensions: length 44 cm.

A rare "Akademische Legion" member sword dating: mid-19th Century provenance: Austria Straight, double-edged blade of lenticular section, partly decorated with engravings featuring remains of finishing and gilding; on a side the double-headed eagle on swords, floral engravings and the inscription "13 14 15 / März 1848", on the other the motto "Mit Gott fur Reich und Paterland", floral decorations and a knight in his armour. Cast iron hilt and grip, quillon-block with relieved mythological characters, straight arms (a restoration on both arms) ending in the shape of in the round buds; grip with a high-relieved scene of men and snakes, on the pommel a relieved, mythological scene.
