Lot 633

9th-10th century AD. A bronze male idol, possibly depicting a god or a saint, dressed in a long robe and tall conical hat holding a staff in his left hand. 86 grams, 95mm (3 3/4"). Property of a professional; acquired on the European art market in the 1980s. A similar hat/crown detail can be seen on the Zbruch idol, which is believed to represent a pre-Christian deity. The pillar is commonly associated with the Slavic deity Svetovid, although opinions on the exact meaning of all the bas-reliefs and their symbols differ. There are also theories claiming it to be Triglav, Perun, Dazbog or Veles, but because our knowledge of iconography of Slavic gods is limited, there is no definite conclusion. However, it is known that most of the saints adapted attributes of pre-Christian gods, which resulted in syncretism, traceable especially in folklore. This statue may represent modified version of Veles in his aspect of a protector of cattle and shepherds, but it is possible that it represents an early depiction of a saint, as well. Very fine condition, very rare.

Property of an Essex gentleman; formerly in a private collection, acquired by descent 1970s. The material from which this axe-hammer is made is not suitable for use as an implement, being quite soft and liable to splitting on the original geological sediment planes and it was thus most probably made for ceremonial rather than practical use; the lack of any usage wear evidence is also suggestive of this. Extremely fine condition. Rare.

Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. Very fine condition. Very rare.

Lot 935

Late 18th century AD. A Georgian period green baize-lined mahogany hinged-lid box with brass lock (no key) containing a suite of three graduated cut-steel safe or vault keys each with round bow and baluster turned shaft; the largest with removable sprung dust preventer to bore; the wards precision-cut in different but matching geometric patterns. 683 grams, box: 16 x 9 x 7.5cm (longest key: 13.5cm) (6 1/4 x 3 1/2 x 3 (5 1/4)"). 'The Ministry of Persecution' probably refers to the tax office who were pursuing the poet at about the same time. A 1952 Indian Brave, registration number NSV 906, red. Indian were renowned for their large V twin motorcycles, also produced a smaller 250cc side valve engined machine, which was manufactured by Brockhouse Engineering of Southport (the makers of the Corgi). The Brave had the 250cc side value engine, which remained in production until the mid-1950s, and ceased production when the company was taken over by Royal Enfield. This rare machine has performed part of a large collection of motorcycles in recent years, and has been kept in dry storage. The vendor informs us that the motorcycle was last used in 2014, when it was said to be running well. Unfortunately, the vendor has lost the key but a replacement should be available through the Owners' Club. During his ownership, the motorcycle has benefited from a new exhaust pipe and is now only for sale due to the owner's ill health. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustration

Lot 28

A 1960 Royal Enfield Meteor Minor, registration number 134 RPK, red. It featured an over square 496cc overhead valve vertical twin engine with separate light alloy cylinder heads and an Albion four speed gearbox. It was more than capable of keeping up with the competition and had a very respectable top speed of 98 mph when new. This Meteor Minor comes to auction from a deceased's estate. It would appear in good condition but it is not known when the machine was last used, and to this end it is advised that the motorcycle will require re-commissioning and the usual safety checks before being ridden. V5C, no MOT, tax exempt See illustration

Lot 42

EXTRA LOT: A 1966 Honda CS92 Benly Sports, frame number C92-5000121, engine number C92E-5000125, blue. The CS92 is one of the most underrated and undervalued of Honda's early classics, yet arguably is one of the most interesting. Introduced in 1959 the model featured stylish upswept exhausts fitted with perforated heat shields and featured the 15 bhp ***four (not two) stroke*** engine which was capable of 75 mph when new. The CS92 was produced for less than two years and this example is in remarkably original and complete condition. We are advised by the vendor that the engine turns over without any untoward noises, but there is some damage to the seat cover, and in some places there is surface rust on the frame. Offered for auction without any documents this ultra rare early Honda represents possible a once in a lifetime opportunity to own such a machine. No accompanying paperwork. See illustration

Lot 49

A 1962 Moto Guzzi Lodola, registration number UXG 118, red with bronze frame. This rare 235cc sports machine has formed part of a large collection of motorcycles in recent times. It is currently registered to run on a daylight MOT, with the last certificate expiring on 19th September 2013, which had no advisories. This rare Italian sports machine is offered for auction with an instruction/maintenance manual, various receipts, and general information. It is now reluctantly for sale due to the vendor's ill health. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustration

Lot 66

A 1966 Gilera Giubileo 150cc 5V Sport Extra, registration number FHJ 511D, yellow with bronze frame. This rare Gilera has formed part of a large private collection. It was last used in 2014, when the vendor informs us that it was running well. It benefits from an engine rebore, with new piston, which still requires further running in a five speed gearbox and alloy wheels. Its last MOT expired in ***May 2013 (not 2015)***, and now will require general fettling and the usual safety checks before passing its new MOT and taking to the road. It is now unfortunately, only reluctantly for sale due to the owner's ill health. V5C, no MOT, tax exempt See illustration

Having formed part of large collection of motorcycles this TWN has been in storage for the last two years but up until that point the vendor informs us that the machine was running well. The vendor now informs us that the machine will require general recommissioning after storage and a new battery will be required. The TWN is offered for auction with a list of parts fitted and owner's manual. RF60, MOT and tax exempt See illustration

Since the restoration was completed the motorcycle has been on display and will require final fettling of the usual safety shake down before returning to the road. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustration ***Note: The vendor informs us that PSJ 680 will require new rear wheel bearings***
