An unusual and rare Victorian late 19th century military themed handkerchief. Likely from the 1880’s or early 1890’s, the handkerchief shows illustrations of army camp life, some with comedic overtones. Printed in black and purple/grey on off white cotton. At the centre are a group of army officers, enlisted men and a Royal Navy able seaman. The motto ‘Defence not Defiance’ was used by the Volunteer Force in Britain from 1859, and a number of the illustrations allude to Volunteer battalions being featured. The handkerchief is hemmed to 2 of the 4 edges. Approximately 62cm x 61cm Condition: generally good. No holes or rips to the fabric, but a couple of old liquid stains (these may be able to be cleaned off). Old pin holes to one edge where it has been previously tacked to a wall.
A rare WW2 era ‘Enicar Sport’ Air Ministry instrument / aerial camera watch. Stainless steel case with off white dial and luminescent hands, and sweep second hand. Marked ‘A.M 14.A/1102’ to the reverse. Fitted with a ‘Bonclip’ stainless steel link bracelet strap. Notes: the A.M 14 A mark refers to a Gun or Missile camera attached to the undercarriage of an aircraft, likely an F46 Torpedo Camera. The watch would have been held within a frame on the camera, and by means of a mirror and lens, it was able to appear in the corner of reconnaissance images as a way of recording the time. The watch was never designed to have a strap fitted, although the traditional lugs are in place, and there has been a later stainless steel strap fitted. The watch is dated 1945 to the edge of the case, behind one of the lugs. Approximately 3.5cm width including the crown. Condition: generally good. Some light service wear to the case and glass front. When wound, the watch appears to work as it should, but this is by no means a guarantee. The strap is of later date, and is in usable condition. Note: regarding watches/pocket watches please note movements untested, functionality untested, for more information request a condition report with specific questions or please view in person

A fine and rare Boer War, African and WW1 casualty medal group, consisting of the Queen’s South Africa Medal, the Africa General Service Medal, the Natal Rebellion Medal, 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, WW1 death plaque, Boer War Christmas tin, plus a sterling silver Imperial Yeomanry sweetheart brooch. The QSA is named to 28327 Pte J. Harvey 84th Coy Imperial Yeomanry, complete with clasps for SA1901, SA1902, OFS, and CC (clasps confirmed). The Africa General Service Medal is complete with the Somaliland 1902-04 clasp, and is named to 497 J.Harvey Boer Contingent. The Natal Rebellion Medal is complete with the 1906 clasp, and is named to Trooper J Harvey Natal Police. The 1915 Star is named to GS-5753 Pte J. Harvey 3 Dragoon Guards. Both the BWM and Victory Medal is simply named to 2.Lieut J.W. Harvey. Notes: the QSA clasps are confirmed to 28327 Pte J. Harvey, and he is listed as serving with the 22nd (Rough Riders) Battalion IY. His AGS medal to the Boer Contingent is rare, with only 94 all ranks within the company. The Natal Rebellion Medal to the Natal Police is one of only 1082 awarded to that outfit. His medal index card gives his name as James Harvey, with his middle name of Walter seemingly added in another hand at a later date. The 1915 Star only uses J.Harvey with the BWM and Victory Medal having J W Harvey. Each of the medals have official impressed naming, except the AGS, which is neatly engraved. He was commissioned 12.11.15 into the Army Service Corps, died while on active service on 25.08.17. He is interred at the Cromer No.2 Burial Ground. Worthy of much further research. Condition: generally very good. The medals are loosely medal on a card backing, with each being in good condition. The death plaque is in solid condition, but does have some verdigris spots. The Queen Victoria Christmas tin shows paint wear and some denting to the surface.
A rare WWII Grana ‘Dirty Dozen’ Military wristwatch. Undoubtedly the Holy Grail for WW2 wristwatch collectors, this Grana example is one of only 1000-1500 made during the late WW2 era. 12 manufacturers were contracted to make British military watches (hence the Dirty Dozen moniker), and Grana made by far the fewest. Marked with a broad arrow to the back cover, and the letter W.W.W, which stands for ‘Watches,Wrist, Waterproof’. The serial number M18694 is marked below the WWW, indicating a 1945 manufacturer date. The case is of stainless steel, with a black dial with subsidiary dial, sword style hands, and a screw on back cover. Luminescent numerals and hands. The black dial has undergone an interesting modification during the post war era, with the military broad arrow having been (almost invisibly) painted out. Information supplied by the vendor suggests that his father had this minor alteration made in order for it to not be obviously of military origin. The removal of this painted modification may be possible. The watch is currently fitted with a later, likely 1960’s stainless steel expanding bracelet strap by Fixo-Flex. The watch measures 3.8cm wide, not including the crown. Condition: cosmetically very good. Normal light signs of service wear, with fine scratches to the glass and stainless steel casing. The movement would appear to work when wound, with both the minute and second hands operating as they should. Note: regarding watches/pocket watches please note movements untested, functionality untested, for more information request a condition report with specific questions or please view in person
