This creative arm of watchmaking is vast and over the century's timepieces have found their way into nearly every inanimate object that can be thought of. Their ultimate form has only been limited by the imagination of their maker and in some cases that seems to have been infinite. From pistols, walking canes and scent flasks to spyglasses, telescopes and perfume bottles, such as the present lot, the variety of concealed watches makes them a fascinating subsection of horology to collect. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The very fine underslung ruby cylinder (jewelling the escapement), the famous Parachute spring system to protect the balance (shock resist systems) and the bi-metallic curve for accurate temperature compensation (compensation balances). Incorporated in this watch Breguet came up with a system that allowed the hour hand to remain stationary on the hour marker until the minute hand reached the next hour when it would then jump instantaneously to the next number. A very interesting development that was used for digital displays later but for the traditional dial it was somewhat confusing as at 5 minutes to four the hour hand would still point at 4 rather than be close to 5. There is a story that Napoleon had a watch with this feature and missed an important meeting by misreading his watch. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 18

Breguet. He came up with a plan whereby his clients could order a watch paying a down payment and then the balance when the watch was delivered. This founded the business and allowed him to rebuild. These watches were known as 'Souscription' watches and the dial of this watch has a secret scratch signature and is numbered. Each of these watches is in some way unique as each was finished by hand with a certain amount of freedom given to the watchmaker. This is a beautifully made watch of relatively large diameter (60mm), with a single hand and enamel dial, the movement is of great simplicity based around a large central barrel and symmetrical layout to the wheels. To this design Breguet added his special features like the parachute shock resist system and the underslung ruby cylinder which were all his own advances in horology. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The result was an exceptionally light but sturdy watch – the current lot weighs just over 21 grams.
