Duchetti was one of the more active engravers of the sheet maps which were published under the generic title of Lafreri atlases. The Realm of the Queen of Flowers, Rational Entertainment, German, c.1830s, four hand-col. slotted sheets, 310 x 240 mm (12.25 x 9.5 ins), each depicting a vessel for holding flowers, with fifty hand-col. litho cut-out flowers, each with a numbered tab, together with 4pp. instruction guide (browned and creased), contained in orig. portfolio with moire flaps (one detached), orig. cloth-backed boards, extrems. a little worn, with hand-col. pictorial label on upper cover (dusty), ties broken, 4to. Very rare complete with all the parts. "The several flowers are placed on one of the 4 Cartons in the incision made for this purpose; thus the most elegant bouquets and garlands are produced either according to free choice of the flowers, or the time of the year in which they bloom, or their symbolic signification as given here. For the latter purpose is used the motto attached to the name of each flower in the text. From the first letters of the flowers, words and names can be composed, the unriddling of which affords most agreeable amusement. The numbers on the stalks of the flowers refer to the name and signification of the same in the text and to the same number. - Such a composition made with taste and elegance will serve as a model for drawing and painting; and even for embroidery." Journal of the Operations of the Belvoir Fox Hounds from July 29 1803 ... to April 21st 1829, 25 vols., 1804-[29?], a near unbroken run lacking vols. for 1804-05 and 1805-06, all with printed half-titles, the volume for 1819-20 which was apparently never published included here in neat contemp. manuscript, scattered spotting or marginal browning, many vols. with ownership signature of the Manners family to front pastedowns, contemp. calf gilt with leather labels to spines, the manuscript volume somewhat thicker and with gilt dec. spine, all somewhat rubbed, several joints weak and a few covers det., 4to. A rare near-complete run of this journal, lacking only vols. 1-4 and 6-7. Schwerdt I, p.59 and IV, p. 11: "This Journal began August 10th, 1799, and ended April 21st, 1829, but the volume for 1819-20 was apparently never published, though the NS. manuscript thereof is preserved at Belvoir Castle". Schwerdt`scollection lacked a total of seven volumes including the manuscript volume here present. (25)

A rare Staffordshire figure group titled `Masaniello`, c. 1880, modelled as the Neopolitan fisherman and his sister Fenella, 29cm. Masaniello, an abbreviation of Tommaso Aniello (1622-1647) was a Neopolitan fisherman, who became leader of the revolt against Spanish Habsburg rule in Naples, and was assassinated only nine days later. The story was a popular Opera in the latter part of the Nineteenth Century. See P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, plate 111.

FILM DIRECTORS: An interesting, rare collection of fifty three individual Ds.S. by various film and stage directors, cinematographers, producers and some actors, each one page, 4to, various places, March 1960. The documents all take the form of printed questionnaires that were issued by the Directors Guild of America, Inc. to their members and ask for their opinions in answer to whether they would prefer their credit to appear immediately before or immediately after television films. The directors are invited to state the reasons for their choice and all have signed the documents at the conclusion, many adding interesting holograph remarks. Included are questionnaires signed by Stanley Kubrick, George Pal (rare), William Wyler (who opts for the credit to appear after the show, explaining ‘To keep from boring the audience even before the show starts, the way we do in theatres. Don’t force the credits on people who don’t want to see them.’), Busby Berkeley (who opts for the credit to appear first, ‘What has been good enough for Motion Pictures through the years is good enough for me…’), Vincente Minnelli, Rouben Mamoulian (‘Many viewers switch the program off at the end of the film without waiting for tail-end credits’), George Stevens, Jean Renoir (‘I think that the movie industry is in bad shape because it didn’t recognise the importance of the real author of a picture, the director. I hope that television will not follow this dangerous example’), George Sidney, Albert Zugsmith, Norman McLeod, Robert Florey, Andrew McLaglen, Lee Garmes, Howard W. Koch (‘I think people…are more apt to notice credits after they have viewed the show.’), Charles F. Extremely rare Autograph Memorandum Signed, Diesel, one page, oblong 8vo, Munich, n.d., on his personal printed memorandum stationery, in German. In a clear, bold hand, Diesel writes, in full, `The usual means of generation vs. heat through compression is extremely costly compared to electricity, and is also not practicable. Krebs wonders if a draft paper would be of interest to his correspondent`s collection, explaining `This is an early draft of a contribution which will eventually appear in an American publication. You can keep it if you like.` Accompanied by the draft referred to, an original typed working MS, with numerous holograph corrections, seventeen pages, 4to, n.p., 7th July 1961, entitled Enzyme Activity and Cellular Structure. A good signed and inscribed greetings card, the beige folding 8vo card featuring a colour reproduction to the cover of an illustration by Potter depicting Peter Rabbit delivering letters. To the inside appears another illustration of three small rabbits reading the letter delivered by Peter, with a printed caption above. Signed (‘Mrs Heelis “Beatrix Potter”’) to the inside and inscribed in her hand to Ina Douglas, ‘love and best wishes for 1936’. Accompanied by the original printed insert stating that the publishers of the card will be donating the profits from the sales to the Invalid Children’s Aid Association. Shepard, one page, 8vo, Lodsworth, near Petworth, Sussex, 24th April 1958, to Mr. [John] Howarth. Shepard states that his correspondent`s request for a signed photograph can not be met as `I have not got one and I would not wish to join your chamber of horrors in such company as Col. Nasser.` At the centre of the text Shepard has drawn a simple, attractive profile self caricature and in concluding the letter explains `the above is more or less what I look like.` Extremely rare in this form. SADE MARQUIS DE: (1740-1814) French Author and Nobleman, Sade`s perverse sexual preferences and erotic writings gave rise to the term sadism. Rare D.S., Sade, one page, 4to, n.p., 17th September 1798. The manuscript document, entirely penned in Sade`s attractive hand, in French, is the official power of attorney for his son Louis Sade and gives him the power to borrow the sum of twenty thousand francs `under the condition that the money will be used as agreed upon between us`. Sade further states that he gives his son the power to come to an agreement with Citizen Gauffridi `with the goal of removing the impoundment, to prevent impoundment…` Signed at the conclusion with a beautiful example of the author`s signature. DONIZETTI GAETANO: (1797-1848) Italian Composer. Rare A.L.S., Donizetti, one page, 4to, Rue Lepelletier, 24th March (1840?), to a Countess (Merlon?), in French. The composer writes, in full, `On the eve of my departure, allow me, Madam, to thank you for your kindness the whole time I was in Paris, which I will remember for a long time. If I may be of any help to you in Italy I would be grateful to you for giving me that opportunity. At the same time, please give to the bearer of this note the score for Lucrezia Borgia that I was honoured to send you, and to accept the expressions of my esteem and devotion, dear Countess.` A good letter in which the composer refers to one of his most famous operas. About EX. Lucrezia Borgia: an opera in a prologue and two acts after the play by Victor Hugo, in turn after the legend of Lucrezia Borgia was first performed at La Scala, Milan, on 26th December 1833.

WILLIAM III: (1650-1702) King of England, Ireland & Scotland 1689-1702. Rare A.L.S., William R, as King, two pages, small 4to, Hampton Court, 15th January 1701, to an unidentified correspondent. The King announces ‘I perceive by the accounts which you take care to send me of the proceedings in Parlmt. that you meet with unreasonable opposition in all businesse but I am wel pleased to find that you are sensible’ further stating that his affairs make it absolutely necessary that ‘my Parlmt. of Schotland should be adjourned before that of England meet.’ William continues ‘There is one thing I must take notice of to you which is this, if you find that after all the concessions I have been willing to make you shall not withstanding be obliged to adjourn the Parlement abruptlie without obtaining what I may reasonablie expect for keeping up forces necessaire for the publick safitie then itt is my expresse pleasure that you passe not those acts that are voted in Parlement that would be no waie either fitt for my honour or your own reputation, nor indeed for the reall good of my kingdom or securitie of my government. I….this to you with my own hand because it is fitt itt should be an absolut secret. I have an intire trust in your integritie and conduct….’ A letter of good content.
