AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF CHINESE KANGXI PERIOD BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN TULIPIERES, circa 1700, after Dutch Delft 17th Century originals by Adriaen Kocx, each shaped and moulded square section tulip vase in two interconnecting parts, each vase of spire form with two tiers of flower holders emanating from masks, the spires supported on paw feet divided by moulded birds, each plinth supported on pad feet and painted with panels of cherubim amidst flowers alternating with panels of putti dancing on a fence bordered terrace, 16.25in high.(a similar pair can been seen in the Collection of Earl Spencer at Althorp House)

The Tale of Peter Rabbit, 1st privately printed edition, [Strangeways, December, 1901], colour frontispiece, woodblock engravings from the author's line drawings throughout, some light finger-soiling, stitching partially broken and signatures starting, contemporary inscription by the author on front free endpaper 'For Mrs Oliver, from Beatrix Potter - with kind regards & best wishes for Christmas 1901', and later ownership name above of Joan Lamb, original olive-green boards (faded to beige), with flat spine, a little rubbed and upper cover with one or two light marks, spine and lower return with old adhesive tape stain to lower half, and joints mostly split, but with only minor loss at ends (.5" at head), upper cover with printed lettering and vignette of Peter and siblings, 16mo Linder, p.420; Quinby 1. An unrestored copy of Beatrix Potter's extremely rare first book: one of only 250 copies, and this copy inscribed by Beatrix Potter. The character of Peter Rabbit was based on Beatrix's own pet rabbit, and he made his first appearance in a letter written in 1893 to Noel, the five-year-old offspring of her former governess, Annie Carter. Noel and his siblings so enjoyed this and subsequent letters that Beatrix thought about having the story published. In 1900 she sent the story to at least six different publishers, all of whom rejected it, including Frederick Warne, who later decided to take the book on. Undeterred, Beatrix decided to have her little book privately printed, and in 1901 250 copies were published priced at 1/6 each, of which this is one. They sold so well that in February 1902 she had a further 200 copies printed with slightly amended text. (1)

This is the first translation into a European language of the central text of Asian erotology, and the basis of all other European translations. λ A rare George III Irish upright square piano or Camerachord by William Southwell of Dublin, the mahogany case with satinwood banding, the top with a Gothic fretwork gallery flanking a painted tablet with a cypher with a worn inscription and the number '22' above a geometric parquetry band and a hinged panel painted with musical trophies within a sunburst frame and an outer border of grapevines, peacock feathers and ribbon tied instruments, flanked by a pair of oval silk pleated panels, the base with two hinged compartments, one revealing the five and a half octave keyboard with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals with one pedal, the conforming stand on square tapering legs with an undertier and brass castors, 141.7cm high, 157cm wide, 46.5cm deep. William Southwell (1736/7-1825) was an Anglo-Irish inventor and musical instrument maker whom made in particular very fine pianos for the nobility and the wealthy elite. He is most well known for the production of a demi-lune piano which when closed appeared as a very fashionable Adam style pier table. The above example is a rare upright square pianoforte, the design for this piano was patented in 1798. It is number '22' so this points it to being an early example made between 1798 and 1800. Only a small number of these pianos are known to exist, there is an example in the National Museum, Dublin and Ireland and there was one in the Finchcocks Musical Museum in Kent which closed in December 2015. Our thanks to Margaret Debenham for help in researching this lot.

A rare pair of 18th century brass pew hangings, each engraved with the arms of the North family and with the motto 'ANIMO ET VIDE' and pierced with a suspension hole, 23.8 x 15.5cm. (2) Provenance: Purchased by the current vendor from Peter Gould. The shield is one granted to North of Walkeringham, Nottinghamshire and Huddersfield in 1600. The arms were granted to the Nottinghamshire branch of the North family after one of their younger generation had left his home territory and risen to such prominence in London as to be granted a peerage, with a further generation being elevated to be Earls of Guilford.

Menelik II (1844-1913) reigned from 1889-1913 confronting and defeating the Italians in their attempts to expand their empire.
