A member of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, he was highly regarded within the Chinese intellectual community itself. SKETCHES of Portuguese life, manners, costume, and character / by A. P. D. G.- London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1826.- XXV, [3], 364 p.: il.; 23 cm.- E., Rare title in the foreign bibliography on Portugal, whose author, who signs only with his initials, remains to this day unidentified. It is known only that he served in the army in Lisbon and accompanied the royal family in their retreat to Brazil. The 20 aquatints (plus an engraving with musical notation of a modinha), hand-coloured, that illustrate the edition, mainly represent customs and scenes of daily life in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro and present a caricatural and satirical feature. Complete copy, according to the “directions to the binder”, including the front cover sheet (often missing), untrimmed, slightly handled, with some browning and occasional light stains; the colour of the prints caused some offset on the opposite page. Good binding, full red shagreen, from the 19th/20th century, with Greek meander border on the covers, smooth spine decorated in gold, simple rolls on the squares and thickness of the folders. Keeps the original endpapoers on marbled paper. Duarte de Sousa, 3. Tooley, 453. Foulché-Delbosc, 255.

XXXXVIII. [1748].- [40], 444 [i. é 442] p., 1 tabela desdobr.: 1 retrato, XVIII [i. é 20] gravuras desdobr.; 20 cm.- E., José Fernandes Alpoim (1700-1765) was born in Viana do Castelo and in 1738 he traveled to Brazil where he became famous as an architect and military engineer, having reached the rank of brigadier. In Rio de Janeiro he taught in artillery and fortification courses for which he wrote two treatises: “Exame de Artilheiros” (Lisbon, 1744) and the present “Exame de Bombeiros”. The edition is illustrated with a portrait of Gomes Freire de Andrade (1685-1763), governor of Rio, to whom the work is dedicated, engraved by Olivarius Cor (Ernesto Soares, História, p. 180 and nº 500), an allegorical vignette at the beginning of the dedication and 20 engravings (19 leaflets), numbered from I to XVIII (from engravings II and XI there are two different proofs) by José Francisco Chaves (Ernesto Soares, História, p. 171). Particularly enigmatic is Figure XVII that presents the subscription: José Franc. Chaves fecit — Rio 1749. This last indication has led some historians and bibliographers to support the hypothesis that the engraving (and even the edition) may have been opened in Rio de Janeiro, a controversial claim that remains unproven to this day. The pagination has an error: da p. 372 moves to p. 375, without any gaps in the text or in the section. Copy a little trimmed, but clean, keeping all engravings fresh and well folded. Contemporary binding, full sheepskin, slightly worn, with traces of wormholes (without affecting the core), retaining the original endpapers, red label and four raised bands on the spine. Inocêncio, IV, p. 326. Borba de Moraes (1983), p. 25/26 (These two famous and rare works by Alpoym constitute a veritable “bibliographic puzzle”). Army Library, 324.

Lot 6

Bronze colored medal of the XX. Munich Olympics 1972, the example offered here is probably either an extremely rare test sample/test coining, which was actually canceled and then melted down, or a strike as waste. The indentations on the edge and the embossing of Castor and Pollux on both sides speak for cancellation. It is no longer possible to understand how this specimen got out, since the medals to be destroyed were usually handed over to be melted down. It is also not known how many such specimens have come down to our time. The weight is about 132 g. The thickness varies from approx. 4.5 mm to approx. 2.5 mm. The diameter is approx. 74 mm. As a result, this specimen does not correspond to the original winner's medal in terms of weight, thickness or diameter. On the obverse the traditional goddess of victory, holding a palm tree in her left hand and a crown of victory in her right hand. The reverse shows two naked young men, Kastor and Pollux, the twin sons of Zeus and Leda. The medals were minted in the Bavarian Mint. In a letter, a copy of which accompanies this lot, the specimen is described as an "original misprint" with "very great collector's value". A metal cast is offered as an accompaniment together with the medal, an athlete with a laurel branch in a victory pose, height approx. 27 cm. Signs of age and use
