Ausgezeichneter, farblich fein nuancierter Druck, oben und unten mit Rand. Das zweite der 2 seltenen Exemplare der Vorzugsauflage, die an Familienmitglieder und Freunde des Künstlers verteilt wurden. Ursprünglich sind insgesamt 100 Abzüge vorgesehen gewesen, von denen außer den ersten beiden die weiteren jedoch nicht realisiert wurden. Colour offset lithograph on wove paper. Signed, dated, numbered and with the artist's finger print. - Hardly yellowed in outermost edges,harldy bumped in corners, very light surface sratch on lower left, all in all very good. Superb, finely nuanced impression with margin at top and bottom. - The second of the 2 rare copies of the special edition which were distributed to family members and friends of the artist. Originally a total of 100 prints were planned of which, apart from the first two, the others were not realised.

Tel un hommage à cette ville fortifiée menacée par les Allemands mais imprenable de par la vision que nous en fait l'artiste, Gleizes la fait tourbillonner avec sérénité et lui rend ses couleurs que la guerre a estompées. Cette œuvre est vibrante et rythmée par des formes géométriques superposées qui nous laisse entrevoir une évolution de son style vers l'abstraction. Cette composition spectaculaire est représentative de l'œuvre que l'artiste a créée durant cette période mais c'est aussi un témoin rare de la vie personnelle et artistique d'un des pères fondateurs du cubisme.Mobilized in 1914, like many of his Cubist friends, Albert Gleizes was sent to a barracks in Toul, Lorraine, near the front line. Supported by a military doctor, Major Lambert, of whom he would paint an important portrait (now at the Guggenheim Museum in New York), Gleizes continued to draw and paint, but his working conditions were altered by his military obligations. He was soon reformed, thanks to the help of his future wife Juliette Roche, and left for New York. This city will be an upheaval of colors, sounds and vivacity. Our painting was undertaken in Toul according to the precepts of cubism that he theorized with Metzinger and then completed shortly thereafter in 1915 in New York when he arrived. As a tribute to this fortified city threatened by the Germans but impregnable by the vision that the artist gives us, Gleizes makes it swirl with serenity and gives it back its colors that the war has faded. This work is vibrant and rhythmic by superimposed geometric forms that let us glimpse an evolution of his style towards abstraction.
