Measurements 42 x 9 cm. In steel with inscriptions on both sides of the edge where they are distinguished: "Muera Isabel II" and the year1868 on the base; and on the obverse "Topete" with an illegible legend and also 1868. In the mid 1860's, the discontent against the monarchic regime of Isabel II was patent and the Spanish moderantism, in power since 1844, except for the intervals of the progressive biennium (1854-1856) and the governments of the Liberal Union (1858-1863), was in a strong internal crisis. For its part, the Progressive Party, with Pedro Calvo Asensio as one of its promoters, had opted for withdrawal in the elections in order to delegitimize the Cortes that would emerge from them. In 1864 General Narváez returned to power, but had to abandon it after the tragic events of the Night of San Daniel, being replaced by General Leopoldo O'Donnell. It was already at the beginning of September 1868 when the military pronunciamiento was agreed to begin in Cadiz with the uprising of the fleet by the Unionist Admiral Juan Bautista Topete. This is a rare example of one of the Marine Infantry knives from Admiral Topete's squadron, most likely from one of his officers or from the Seamanship troop present at the September 1868 pronunciamiento that rose up in arms against absolutism in Cadiz with Admiral Topete in command. Provenance: private collection in Barcelona.

Max sent several books from his library as gifts, but specifically asked to have The Grapes of Wrath returned after reading. A 1990 newspaper article covering the story notes that “The seven members of the Walter Gore family who had settled in Salinas, Calif. from Oklahoma did indeed return the edition, but not before writing their thanks on the inside cover” (Times Chronicle, Jenkintown, PA, April 25, 1990). The names include Henry Gore, Bess Gore, Nancy Ann Foster, Evalyn Welch, Fred. L. Fried, Mrs. F.L, and lastly, P. McDaniel, with their accompanying dates of reading the work. Berg gifted the copy to Elaine Steinbeck in April of 1990 (letter dated April 10, included with the book), and Elaine passed it on to David Heyler: “Dear David / I want you to have in your collection this book I told you about. It has a lot of history. I have some more publicity about it mixed in with the Grapes file, and as soon as I come across it, I will send it on” (October 21, 1990) (see note to lot 120).
