Rare, being one of only nine "Double Queen" combination franking covers recorded and the earliest recorded usage of the Uganda Definitive stamps on cover. Photo Note: Until Uganda joined the UPU on 1 September 1901, mail to UPU member countries required additional franking from British East Africa. From November 1898, when Uganda Queen Victoria stamps were issued, until 1 September 1901, covers franked with the issues of both Uganda and British East Africa were possible. x Uganda 1898-1902 Definitive Issue Covers 1901 (Nov.) envelope from Gondokoro to Rowland Sperling at the Foreign Office in Downing St., London, bearing 1a. scarlet cancelled by "gondokoro/pqst office" handstamp in pinkish red and additionally tied by superb finely struck 18x17 retta, showing "travelling post office/white nile" c.d.s. at foot, the reverse with Khartoum (10.12) and Cairo (16.12) c.d.s.; the envelope with a central vertical fold and tear at top, nevertheless remaining attractive and very rare with few known. Photo Note; The cover is addressed in the hand of Hugh Rochford Maxstead, the first Civil Officer at Gondokoro and who is thought to have introduced the Gondokoro Post Office handstamp which shows the "Q" for "O" in "POST" error. Gondokoro, in northern Uganda, was the southern terminus for the Nile Steamer service from Khartoum. Two Martin Brothers stoneware tiles, c.1880s, the first with poppies, on a hatched ground and glazed green and brown, the other with Gothic interlaced foliage, in blue and silvery grey, rare Martin Brother & Southwell moulded mark, (c1882-1900), 15 and 14cm, framed (2) It is interesting to find the brothers continuing with Gothic forms which they had largely used in the 1870s. CONDITION REPORT: Sunflowers - no obvious major faults. Foliage tile - rubbing to the glaze.

The Set comprises a wooden based Walled Farmyard with Gate (marked Elastolin made in Germany 0-1607), a Farmhouse and Barn with animal stalls. The walls to the Farmyard, House and Barn are faced with colourful moulded material. The Lot includes a Farmer and metal walking stick, 6 x Farm Animals and a large Tree. The Farmer and Tree are marked Elastolin Germany. The animals are also Elastolin. The Set, Farmer, Animals and Tree are all in Excellent Plus condition. The Lot also includes the original Set Box with an Elastolin label to the lid. The Box and lid are in Fair condition but useable for Set storage. The Box apart a rare find in such Excellent condition.

Thornton, Robert John Thornton?s Temple of Flora folio (435x310 mm) Original engravings and the work describes by Geoffery Grinson with Bibliographical Notes by Handasyde Buchanan. Frontpiece and 11 colour plates, 24 collotypes in black and white, folio (435x310 mm), quarter brown calf with green paper sides, top edge gilt, light foxing on the endpapers, preliminary pages and page edge, the plates ? all with tissue guards ? are bright. No other English book of flower illustrations is more celebrated than this one. This edition of Thornton?s Temple of Flora has been designed and produced for William Collins, 14 St Jame?s Place, London, by George M. rainbird and Ruari McLean. The colour and collotype plates have been printed by Van Leer of Amsterdam and the text pages set in Monotype Perpetua and printed by Meyer of Wormerveer on Van Gelder mould-made paper. The binding has been executed at the London Craft Bindery of W.H. Smith and Sons. The wrapper design and label is based on that used for the rare original parts in which the Temple of Flora was issued. The label and the calligraphic title-page were drawn by Johan Brinkley. This Special edition on hand-made paper is limited to 250 copies, of which this is number 194. In either case, the book (703 pp, 2500 recipes) is rare. Our copy has been rebound, using the original green cloth-boards and spine laid down on the green Skivertex strengthening, with new endpapers. The contents are unmarked, with the early pages sunned and the rest of the text evenly toned towards the edges. Mursalo, T A In Search of a Better Life. A Story of Croatian Settlers in Southern Africa 240 x 160 Despite being published fairly recently (privately, 32 years ago, in a workmanlike production by Printpak, Cape Town), this book, which describes the history and lives of a tiny ethnic and cultural minority of South Africans, is rare. It remains interesting, however, not only for its stated purpose of opening a window on this small community but for the tapestry its early chapters paint of the constituent parts of the then Yugoslavia, which has in more recent years been broken up again. The first Croatians came to South Africa in the 1870s, mainly to work on diamond mines and, later, on goldmines. The author has been able to source more than thirty interesting photographs, which, with several maps, are printed with the ix + 201 pp of text. The spine of the two-colour illustrated dustjacket is sunned. A very fine and rare Chinese white Jade carving of a Phoenix (Qianlong period 1736-1795), extremely finely carved, the Phoenix tightly grasping a lotus stalk with flowers in its beak, flower heads and leaves trailing and with finely carved and incised wings and feathers, a flattened lotus flower rests upon the centre of its back and the underside similarly very finely detailed and with legs with five claws folded underneath the body in low relief, the stone with an even pale tone, with minor brown striations and minor inclusions, approx. 13.4cm long, approx. 6.3cm high (highest point) Provenance: Ex.
