Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, extremely rare silver Royal Head chauffeur's cap badge with crowned ERII cipher, (hallmarked Birmingham 1952, Henry Hodson Plante) 2.2cm wide, 3cm high.Provenance: belonged to Mr Leonard Massey RVM, who worked for Her Late Majesty for over forty years and who was her head chauffeur for many years. Sold with photograph of him driving one of The State Rolls-Royce Phantoms.

Rare George III gold plated anchor pendant, commemorating Earl Howe and his celebrated Glorious 1st June 1794 victory over the French fleet. The fouled anchor with coiled rope engraved 'Earl Howe June 1st 1794' ' 5.5 x 4cmThe Right Honorable Admiral of the Fleet, The Earl Howe (1726-1799) had an illustrious Naval career. On June 1st 1794 (thereafter known as the Glorious 1st) he was in command of the Channel fleet of twenty-two ships and engaged and defeated twenty-five French ships who were escorting a grain convoy. He successfully captured seven French ships with a total prize money of £201,096 (the equivalent of £25,000,000 today). To celebrate his Victory he commissioned gold and gilt commemorative badges to give to participants of the action. The three versions in this sale are by direct family descent and may represent the three versions he had made probably depending on the rank of the recipient.Provenance: Formerly the property of the 6th Earl Howe of Gopsall Park and Penn House, thence by descent to a Lady of title
Lot 1073
Rare Psittacosaurus fossil specimen, Cretaceous period, approximately 100-126 million years old, a large specimen in fine state of conservation, prepared but un-mounted, the skull 13.5 x 12.7 x 9cm, total length approximately 84cm. Discovered in the Yixian formation, Liaoning province, China, this Psittacosaurus dinosaur would have been a Herbivore and most likely lived in a forest area. The species of Psittacosaurus Meilyingensis or more commonly know as “Parrot Lizard” is a genus of extinct Ceratopsian (horned) Dinosaurs that were obligate bipeds at adulthood, with a high skull, robust beak and long filaments similar to quills on the dorsal of its tail. Mostly covered in scales the Psittacosaurus probably had complex behaviours, based on the proportions and relative size of its brain. It may have been active for short periods of time during the day and night, it would have had a well developed sense of smell and vision A good specimen which is mostly intact, this example with twelve ribs present and well preserved skull with visible teeth. The specimen was acquired around the turn of the present century by the current owner who had a link with a Chinese palaeontologist that had direct access to the areas where these specimens are preserved. He was the person that actually prepared this and other specimens excavated from the Yixian formation, Liaoning province, China.

H.M.Queen Elizabeth II, very rare and fine 1950s pink satin full-length petticoat made for Her Late Majesty with very fine hand made lacework top with crowned ER ciphers to fringe.Provenance: Bought at a charity garden party at Euston Hall, Suffolk the seat of The Duke and Duchess of Grafton. The Duchess of Grafton was The Lady of The Bedchamber to The Queen and attended her at the Coronation. She told the buyer that the petticoat was given to her by The Queen after she was finished with it and it had indeed had belonged to and had been worn by Her Majesty. It has been in the purchaser's family ever since.Basically in good original condition. It does have a few small holes and tears - see extra images

Diana Princess of Wales, rare Crocodile leather handbag by Lana Marks specially designed for Diana (she reportedly bought 15 versions of them she liked them so much) and later gifted it to her friend the wife of Greek shipping magnet as a thank you after her friend had admired it at a private dinner party. It is accompanied by a handwritten letter from Diana written on Kensington Palace headed writing paper dated September 19th 1996. Thanking her friend for helping with her one day visit to Greece the previous day and helping her survive the media attention 'This comes with my fondest love and very special thanks from Diana' with envelope. (2)The visit to Greece referred to in the letter was for Diana to attend the funeral of Giannis Kaliviotos, a 27 year old Greek lawyer who had fought a brave battle with cystic fibrosis whom the Princess had befriended whilst being treated at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. It was also less than a month after her divorce was granted and she was under intense media attention. In order for her to attend the funeral Diana flew in the private jet owned by a Greek billionaire and was assisted throughout by her friend in Greece.Good original condition, some minor scuffs and stains and general wear. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II - very rare 1945 military provisional driving license for when she was Princess Elizabeth and was serving in the ATS together with a contemporary charming handwritten and typed account of her service, photographs and related ephemera from her driving instructor in the A.T.S. The late Miss (Major)Violet Wellesley M.B.E.The War Department Driving Permit No.B1232 named to 'H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth' and stating she has blue eyes, 5ft 4 inches high and has light brown hair and dated '1st March 1945'. Signed by the Princess in ink 'Elizabeth'. Official stamp to reverse No.1 Company T.C.M.T. Camberley and in ink 'Wellesley trainer 1st March 1945' 10 x 8 cm. Sold with a group of fascinating photographs of the Princess during her service in the ATS including driving a truck with her instructor Miss Wellesley, working on trucks, group shots and charming shots of the King and Queen visiting the Princess during her service. Various letters from Sir John Wheeler-Bennett on Buckingham Palace headed writing paper requesting Miss Wellesley to write a frank account of her time with Princess Elizabeth in the ATS for the Royal archives , her charming handwritten account with many anecdotes and typed versions of the same, other Royal letters including an envelope addressed to Miss Wellesley from Princess Elizabeth, press cuttings etc.Provenance: Major Violet Wellesley M.B.E. (1897-1971) served in the First World War as a despatch rider and went on to become a driving instructor in the Women's Royal Auxillary Corps (Territorial Army) during the Second World War and as senior driving instructor was appointed by The King to teach Princess Elizabeth to drive when she joined up in 1945. She was awarded an M.B.E. in 1946. After her death in 1971 this unique archive was entrusted to her companion who in turn entrusted it to the vendor . We have been informed by the Adjutant General's Corps Museum in Winchester that they also have an album belonging to Major Wellesley including photographs and a provisional driving licence for Princess Elizabeth which is numbered B1230. Our example is numbered B1232 and has the official Corps stamp and Major Wellesley's name to the reverse leaving us in no doubt as to its authenticity. All the other written and printed ephemera in the lot is original with the exception of the wartime photographs which are post-war reprints ( the copyright for which vests with The Imperial War Museum). The photograph of Major Wellesley with her gas mask bag is the original.

*Oscar Nemon (1906-1965) very rare plaster life cast of Sir Winston Churchill's right hand wearing a signet ring taken in the 1950s whilst the Statesman was sitting for a sculpture for the Guildhall, London. The detailed cast 25 cm long. Provenance: Given by Oscar Nemon to his assistant Mrs Karen Churchill who worked for the sculptor from 1979 until his death in 1985, thence by descent.This very rare cast is believed one of only possibly three known, one of which is in the Churchill archives of Churchill College, Cambridge and another in the War Rooms at Whitehall. Sold with a letter of provenance from the vendor.

Lot 91
Rare Imperial Russian ormolu and malachite presentation watch holder given by H.I.M. Tsar Nicholas I to H.M. Queen Adelaide (wife of H.M.King William IV) presumably on his stay with Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle in 1844. The fine ormolu column with eagle on ball surmount standing on malachite plinth with ormolu stepped base. The underside with engraved ormolu plaque 'Given by the Emperor of Russia to Queen Adelaide & by her bequeathed to A.G.F.F.C. 1849' 22cm high.The A.G.F.F.C. referred to was the Honourable Augusta Georgina Frederica FitzClarence (1824-1855), daughter of Lieutenant General Lord Frederick FitzClarence who was an illegitimate son of King William IV and therefore she was a granddaughter of the King. Queen Adelaide who died in 1849 was known to have shown great kindness and affection to her husband's ten illegitimate children and their families. Augusta FitzClarence died in 1855 leaving her estate to her cousin Lord George Frederick Boyle, 6th Earl of Glasgow.

Very rare Choir Sister nun doll, probably 18th century, the doll with painted wooden face with inset glass eyes framed by delicate painted lashes and brows, painted mouth and rouged cheeks, the tapering wooden torso with cloth upper arms and carved and painted lower arms with detailed fork hands, jointed at the hips and knees, dressed in probably later hand-stitched habit with cross of Lorraine emblem, her fine hand-stitched leather boots and belt possibly from an earlier scheme of dress, approximately 45cm high. Provenance: To be sold by direction of the Canonesses of the Holy SepulchreNB: Nun dolls are believed to have been originally intended as instructional tools, for teaching novice nuns how to attire themselves, and also to maintain strict conformity to the Order’s specific costume over long periods of time. There are also documented instances of nuns sending the dolls to their families as keepsakes or to demonstrate their costume and as first communion gifts. The earliest documented nun doll is the famous 17th Swarbrick doll, thought to date to 1680, which has come to auction a number of times, but most recently in Bonhams, London on 17th November 2009 when it sold for £30,000. When the Swarbrick doll was previously offered in 1996, correspondence was initiated between the Canonesses and academic researchers, letters from that time state that almost all examples of nun dolls are now in museums or private collections and that the doll (or dolls - it is unclear whether the researchers were aware of both dolls) is one of just two instances where they are to be found in original context with their religious order (the other being The Canonesses of St. Augustine at Sayers Common), the letters also state that most examples are thought to be of French origin and that the dolls held by the Sepulchrines in Chelmsford, and at Sayers Common are of 19th century origin. However our comparisons with other early dolls point more towards an 18th century date for this doll which would be consistent with the time when the Canonesses were in Liege, prior to the French Revolution, these dolls may have been amongst the possessions carried in 800 coffers, which were said to have been transported to England, when the Canonesses became displaced. The English house of the Convent of The Holy Sepulchre was established in 1642 in Liège, Belgium by 20 year-old Susan Hawley. Susan’s family were English Catholics, displaced to the Continent by religious persecution. The Convent was created at a time when many English speaking Religious Houses were being founded on the Continent. The Liège Community flourished for over 150 years, Christina Dennett, an early Prioress, advocated spreading the word of God through teaching and she established a school in the City. In 1794 the French Revolution brought new threats of persecution and the Community were forced to move again, much to the dismay of the the Liège townsfolk who had taken the Community to their hearts. After some time searching for a new home and brief stays at London, Yorkshire and Wiltshire, the Community finally found a suitable location at New Hall, near Chelmsford. The house and fifty acres were purchased by a wealthy donor for the Community at a cost of £4000 in 1798, once again a school became established and the Community flourished.Gesso losses to face, damage around her left eye and the nose, general wear and some damage to the clothing - socks and shoes, inspection of the body of the doll is proving difficult without compromising the integrity of the doll with elements of the costume attached to the body

The Liège Community flourished for over 150 years, Christina Dennett, an early Prioress, advocated spreading the word of God through teaching and she established a school in the City. In 1794 the French Revolution brought new threats of persecution and the Community were forced to move again, much to the dismay of the the Liège townsfolk who had taken the Community to their hearts. After some time searching for a new home and brief stays at London, Yorkshire and Wiltshire, the Community finally found a suitable location at New Hall, near Chelmsford. The house and fifty acres were purchased by a wealthy donor for the Community at a cost of £4000 in 1798, once again a school became established and the Community flourished.One finger on the dolls right hand is partially missing, there's wear and scratches to the painted face, some deterioration to clothing, wear and small holes to the shoes, deterioration to socks, the clothing is attached in places including the boots to the socks and whimple to the head, making close examination of the body difficult

A rare Chinese doucai tripod 'dragons' vessel and cover, ding, 18th/19th century, the cover with lingzhi finial and painted with five five-clawed dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst cloud swirls on a lime green enamelled ground, between a yellow enamel diaper border, the base similarly decorated and raised on three moulded mythical beast legs, 26cm high, 28cm diameter十八/十九世紀 黃地鬥彩繪綠龍紋靈芝鈕三足大蓋盌The base has been broken in four pieces and staple repaired. Two of the feet have been restuck. pitting to cover elsewhere, and one small loss of glaze to the cover.

Bali, rare kris stand, ca. 1900, shaped as a squatting naked young woman Kris stands on Bali belong to a category called 'togog' meaning free standing sculptures. Usually these stands depict mythological heroes, gods, demons, sages or priests and were placed near the entrance of a palace or nobleman's house to receive the kris of a male visitor. In former times a man was dressed when he wore his kris at the back. Favoured stands were also in use of the kris owner, although special and valuable krisses were most likely stored outside view. Kris stands can also be placed on an altar in the family temple of prominent people. I such cases the kris serve as replacement for a person or a temporary abode for an ancestor or god. The present item is rare in that it does not represent a hero or god, but a naked young woman. Nudity or semi-nakedness is not uncommon in Balinese culture, but as a kris stand it is quite unique. In this case the woman is depicted completely nude, without adornments and the long hair flowing over her back. The hair is typically not tied into a bun, indicating her status of seniorship, but instead denoting her age on the brink of maturity. Upon closer inspection we see tiny wooden pegs driven into the wood around the now visible pudenda, most probably to attach pubic hair. Traces of white in the hair may indicate that she originally wore flower heads.Her eyes are not fixated on the kris she holds in front, but instead she gazes into infinity as if the artist wanted to emphasize the current condition in which she is depicted, completely nude. We know of kris holders depicted as (semi-) naked toddlers on their first anniversary, as for instance one held at the Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden, inv. nr. 7082-S-4403 shows. These stands probably allude to a certain condition in life, a rite of passage, being a lesser known category in Balinese sculpture.Concerning the age, the present item with its worn surface as a result of handling over a long period of time may well be assigned to the second half of the 19th or early 20th century.(A more elaborated report in Dutch on this kris stand is available on request) Provenance: Private collection, The NetherlandsExhibited: Galerie d’Eendt, Amsterdam 22may until 15 july 1967, Published: 33x3+1, Galerie d’Eendt 1967.
