Together With the Fop-Dictionary, and a rare and incomparable receipt to make pig, or puppidog-water for the face, title a little soiled, a few leaves shaved at head with loss to headlines or pagination, occasional ink staining, more extensively to C4 with some words obscured and some resultant holing, 20th century roan-backed cloth, [Keynes 102; Wing E3520], small 4to, for Joseph Wild, 1700.⁂ Mary Evelyn (1665-1685) was the daughter of John Evelyn and died of smallpox at the age of 19. The Ladies Dressing-Room Unlock'd is a satire on the style and speech of the Francophile fashion in vogue at the time. Mary died 5 years before publication, and that task was finally completed by her father, who also probably wrote the preface. First published in 1690, this imprint is rare with only the BL copy listed on ESTC.

We can trace only one example of this edition at auction in the last 50 years.Provenance: Robert Revell (ink ownership inscription).

All issues are rare, each with only a handful of copies on ESTC, this imprint with only two copies listed (The National Trust and Henry E. Huntington Library). Stretzer was known for his Merryland books in which he used topographic metaphors to described the female body. The present work by contrast focuses on the male member through an extended botanical metaphor. We can trace no copies at auction."Some Virtuosi have thought of improving their trees for some purposes, by taking off the Nutmegs, which is however a bad way; they never see after, and are good for little more than making whistles of, which are importet every year from Italy, and sell indeed at a good price" pp. 6-7.

All of the 17th century editions are rare, ESTC lists only three copies of the first volume. We can trace no example of another set with so many 17th century editions at auction, even the Blackmer set have volumes 1-3 in a later edition.

A RARE PAIR OF POLYCHROME CAST IRON BLACKAMOOR FIGURES MID 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY CAST BY VAL D'OSNE AFTER MATHURIN MOREAU Depicting 'Jongleur' and 'Charmeur de serpents', refreshed polychrome decorated cast iron on later ribbed white marble pedestal bases, apparently unmarked 177cm high overall, figures 135.5cm high The present pair of figures are based on engravings of figures published by the Mathurin Moreau. As their trade catalogues reveal, Moreau's oeuvre was extensively reproduced by the Val D'OSNE foundry during the latter quarter of the 19th century. Another pair of these torchères, with polychrome decoration, sold Christie's London, 12 December 1996, lot 146 (£57,500).Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. As per cataloguing decoration is refreshed but subsequent to this both have suffered surface wear, scuffs and paint loss. This is mostly visible to reverse of each and exposed limbs and joints- in some cases the loss is quite large. Both seem to have gone through various sets of wiring for electricity (now absent) and have drilled later holes. Original Durenne style compartment to buttocks of each is still visible with edges having lost paint covering- in both cases screw fixing is over painted and inaccessible. Snake figure with snake in two sections, and later screw fixing to back for safer display. A RARE PAIR OF PARCEL GILT AND BRONZE FIGURAL TORCHERESBY BARBEDIENNE AND GUILLEMIN, FRENCH, CIRCA 1870 The 'Deux Femmes Japonais' cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne from the models by Emile-Coriolan-Hippolyte Guillemin (1841-1907), in the form of standing Japanese female figures in kimono, embroidered with cranes and prunus respectively, supporting five later candelarms in the form of lilies, formerly gasoliers and later wired for electricity (now absent), and now on gilt metal mounted and inset onyx bases, each signed to cast "E le Guillemin" and "F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR" the figures 119cm and 118cm high, height including candle branches and bases 213cm overall, bases 82cm high and 38cm wideProvenance: Sotheby's London 2nd November 1989, lot 348. This model was illustrated in the F Barbedienne 'Catalogue Des Bronzes D'art' Paris 1886, page 62, and titled "Deux Femmes Japonais- figures debout, porte lumieres". The figures had been designed by Guillemin, a noted sculptor and regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon. Generally seem to be in fairly good condition albeit with some rubbing to exposed edges. As per cataloguing these have been wired for electricity as various times and with remnants of various drilled holes and switch to plinth of each. Currently they are not wired. The smaller detailing such as fan, prunus and hair accoutrements look to be mostly the original joints but there is some slight build-up around them suggesting there have been small repairs. Later lily arms with some old repairsStands- chips and some edge repairs- notably to upper edges- the stands rest on gilt metal thin plinth bases.
