Newbery (F., publisher) Cries of London (The), as they are daily exhibited in the Streets with an Epigram in Verse adapted to each, to which is added a Description of the Metropolis in verse, woodcut frontispiece and 61 full-page illustrations, 6pp. advertisements at end, contemporary ink inscription "Betsey Brown Janr.1th 1778. Sent from London by Cousin John Surridge" to front pastedown, one or two small stains, C7 & 8 torn and slightly defective at lower margin, original "Dutch" floral boards, a little worn, lacking most of backstrip, [Osborne II p.629; Roscoe J86 (2)], 32mo, F.Newbery, 1775.⁂ Rare; Roscoe lists an advertisement for the book dated 1771, but the 1775 edition seems to be the earliest known. Roscoe locates 4 copies, one of which is imperfect (Osborne). ESTC records 3 copies in North America but none in the UK.
Newbery (E., publisher).- [Fenn (Lady Ellenor)] Parsing Lessons for Elder Pupils...by Mrs.Lovechild, 4pp. advertisements at end, contemporary ink inscription "P.P.Acland 1807" to inside front wrapper and old Exeter bookseller's label, original stiff blue wrappers with printed oval label to upper cover, slightly rubbed and soiled, spine frayed at head, 1798 § [Kendall (Edward Augustus)] Keeper's Travels in search of his Master, engraved frontispiece (lightly water-stained), a little soiled and stained, bound in modern dark blue morocco, by Frost & Co. of Bath, 1798, first editions, [Roscoe J122 & J206], 12mo, E.Newbery (2)⁂ Both rare; ESTC lists only the British Library copy of the first, and 5 UK copies in 4 locations of the second.
Sports & Games.- Book of Games (The); or, a History of the Juvenile Sports, practised at the Kingston Academy, first edition, lacking O1, 5 & 6 (pp.145/6 & 153-156, final two leaves) but with all 24 engraved plates, some hand-coloured or partly so, contemporary ink signature at head of title and inscription to verso of frontispiece, a little foxed and soiled, C1 & F5 torn but no loss to text, one plate and a few other leaves torn or frayed at edges, one or two repaired, pencil note by James Stevens Cox to front pastedown reads "Excessively rare", modern red roan-backed marbled boards, J.Adlard for Tabart and Co., 1805. ⁂ Scarce first edition of children's games and sports including cricket, hockey, fives, bathing, archery, whipping-top, shuttlecock, leap frog, marbles and football. Library Hub records only 3 UK copies (Leicester University, Trinity College Dublin and University of Oxford, the last with 16pp. publishers' catalogue at end). A New York edition was published in 1822 by George Long.
Game.- Wallis (John, publisher) Science in Sport or the Pleasures of Natural Philosophy; A New & Instructive Game, folding engraved sheet with 30 vignettes around larger central view of Niagara Falls with 4 small portraits of Boyle, Descartes, Franklin and Bacon flanked by descriptions and rules, dissected and mounted on linen, c.435 x 560mm., contemporary ink signature "P.J.?Grut 1814" to verso, a little soiled, a few stains, a few sections slightly creased at corners, [Whitehouse p.35], small 4to, John Wallis, 1805.⁂ Very rare game featuring scientific experiments, inventions and natural phenomena including fireworks, lightning, a camera obscura, diving bell, and volcano; a companion game to The Pleasures of Astronomy issued a year earlier. Library Hub lists only one copy in the UK (Queen's University Belfast).
Game.- Wallis (Edward, publisher) Wallis's New Game of Genius, or Compendium of Inventions connected with the Arts, Sciences and Manufactures...for the Amusement and Instruction of Youth of both Sexes, folding hand-coloured engraved sheet with 36 fine aquatint vignettes around title and central view, dissected and mounted on linen, c.390 x 495mm., lightly soiled and browned, one or two small spots, with the very rare booklet of rules and descriptions, stitched in original green wrappers (slightly soiled, split to fold at foot), together in original embossed green cloth slip-case, upper cover with title and decorations in gilt, rubbed, a little worn at corners and edges, [Whitehouse p.39], small 4to, E.Wallis, [c.1835].⁂ Rare game depicting a variety of activities and inventions including mining, a telegraph station, magic lantern, lithographic printing, a fire-engine, ballooning, card games, paper-making, gunpowder, a barometer, life-boat, and letterpress printing around a final larger central scene described as follows:"No.37. The subject here introduced comprises some of the most striking inventions of modern genius. At a distance is seen a manufactory worked by steam; on the river a steam-vessel pursues its rapid course, while a stream is crossed by a suspension, or chain-bridge, along which is passing a train of those wonderful locomotive engines, which on a railway have conveyed the most enormous burdens at the almost incredible speed of thirty miles per hour."Library Hub lists only 2 copies in the UK (BL and National Library of Scotland, only BL with booklet); WorldCat adds 5 in America. Another copy was sold in these rooms on 21st November 2019 (lot 276) but without the rule booklet.
Game.- Wallis (Edward, publisher) Wallis's New Game of Wanderers in the Wilderness, folding hand-coloured aquatint pictorial map of South America with pictorial cartouche of tiger, snakes, parrot, monkey and alligator by J.H.Banks, dissected and mounted on linen, c.680 x 515mm., lightly soiled, one or two small stains, split to linen between two sections, with the very rare booklet of rules and descriptions, original printed pink wrappers, slightly soiled and faded at edges, together in original embossed cloth slip-case, upper cover titled and with decorations in gilt, rubbed and a little faded, small stain and worn patch to upper cover, [Whitehouse p.16], small 4to, [c.1844].⁂ Charming game depicting scenes, geography, flora & fauna of South America including a jaguar, tapir, anacondas, llamas, condor, rhea, whales, collecting juice from an agave tree, washing margin diamonds in troughs, panning gold, a gaucho lassooing wild cattle, the towns of Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, Lima & Quito, and Alexander Selkirk (Robinson Crusoe) on the island of Juan Fernandez. It is a companion game to Wallis's Game of the Star-Spangled Banner, or Emigrants to the United States of c.1842, a copy of which was sold in these rooms in November 2019 (lot 275). Library Hub records 3 UK copies of the present game (BL, Cambridge and Oxford) but only the British Library copy is complete with the rules booklet."No.22. Hark at the horrid sounds which proceed from the forest! It is the death roar of a Jaguar which an immense Boa-Constrictor is in the act of crushing to a jelly...You cannot pass him, but must return to No.7.No.66. I see the track of CAYMEN in the mud. Ah! there is one. He plunges in the stream with an unhappy negro whom he has surprised in his tremendous jaws. Now the shrieks of his struggling victim are stifled beneath the waves".
Livestock.- Lambert (James) The Country-Man's Treasure, woodcut frontispiece of cow, sheep and hog, with additional variant title, 3pp. advertisements at end, second title with tip of lower outer corner torn away not affecting text or border, E2 torn at upper outer corner with loss of a few letters to 4 lines (neatly supplied in ink manuscript), for Henry Twyford, 1683 bound with Treatise (A) of Oxen, Sheep, Hogs, and Dogs, tear to D7 but no loss, for Obadiah Blagrave, 1683, together 2 works in 1, several 18th century ink signatures and inscriptions (H.Sandford, David Blakway 1750, Thos. Collins 1762, 1763 & 1774) and with extensive annotations and remedies to text and endpapers (small wormtrack to front endpapers), staining, later calf, border of gilt rules and decoration in blind, rebacked and corners repaired, [Wing L232 & T2093; Fussell I, pp.87-88; Smith I p.343, first work only, "I cannot trace a copy"], 8vo ⁂ Two rare veterinary works. The first work, originally published in 1676, appeared in 2 variants with different title-pages; unusually both are present here. The first (ESTC R504352) is titled "The Country-Man's Treasure...by James Lambert" with imprint "for Henry Twyford" and is listed by ESTC as being in a private collection and Yale Beinecke library only, and not in Wing. The second (ESTC R30927) "The Countrymans Treasure...by James Lambart...for Henry Twyford...and Obadiah Blagrave..." appears with 4 UK copies listed - BL, Oxford Bodleian, Wellcome, and Rothamsted, of which the latter was sold in these rooms July 2018 lot 371 (although it was in fact the previous variant).The second work is also rare, with ESTC recording only 4 copies - BL, Wellcome, Rothamsted and Yale Beinecke (Rothamsted copy bound with the first work, sold as previously stated). The annotations concern additional treatments for ailments such as "for anything bitten with a mad dog", "a very good pissing drink for a beast", "for pissing blood" etc.
Byart (Nicolaus de ) Dictionarius pauperum omnibus predicatoribus pernecessarius, collation: a-p8 q4, 123 ff., double column, Gothic letter, title in red and black and with large woodcut printer's device, woodcut initials, final f. blank, a6 short tear within text, causing a very small hole with loss of a few letters, b8 marginal ink scribbles at foot, water-stained, upper hinge broken, later vellum, lacking ties, 8vo (157 x 101mm.), [Paris], François Regnault, [February, 1512.]. ⁂ Rare, with USTC recording only four copies.
Medieval Marriage Contract.- Marriage contract agreed between Thomas de Nevill kt and John de Chaumont that Sir Thomas's eldest son shall marry John's daughter Elayne, and they will be enfeoffed of Sir Thomas's manor of Evereslaye with many provisions for reversion etc., manuscript in Anglo-Norman, 39 lines, in light brown ink, lacks seal, natural flaw in left margin, 1 small hole in text, slight staining affecting upper left corner, folds, browned and creased, 280 x 246mm., York, 1345.⁂ Medieval marriage contracts from the fourteenth century are rare.
